From the Kingdom of the West

Ann of the Red Hill. Quarterly per saltire, 1 & 4 gyronny of eight argent and gules, 2 & 3 argent, a mill rind sable.

This looks too much like an attempt to marshal Acton and Melbourne. A perusal of Randall's Rules might be in order for this person, who should know better.

Baranach MacCuraldh. Erminois, a lion rampant guardant sable, brandishing a double-edged claymore proper.

A Claymore is the two-handed greatsword with drooping quillions terminating in three or four rings. This terms was used until the advent of the claybeg (what this person terms a claymore) in the 17th century. The claybeg is here more properly called the Scots version of the Venetian Schievena. (See Stone's Glossary.) If this person is going to go Scots, maybe a little more research is in order. We suggest that the Claybeg be replaced with a weapon more in period with the college. (pictures).

Caitleen na Darae. Per fess wavy Or and vert, in chief two chaplets of roses and oak leaves argent, barbed and seeded proper, and in base three barrulets wavy Or.

Chaplets are reserved for the Arms of Princesses.

Christina of the Runes. Purpure, on a roundel wavy-cresty counterclockwise, a wingless dragon involved vert; orbed gules, grasping an annulet purpure.

1). What color is the roundel?

2) The blazon says "wingless", the emblazon shows distinct wings. Which is correct?

3) Please trick in the tinctures of the Xeroxed emblazons in the future.

Eastern Gate. Sable, a city gate closed Or, portcullised sable.

We must have a Laurel wreath!

Too close to Swithen, Rivers, et. al. Papworth, pg. 981.

What is the colour of the Cross, pray.

Katrine de Provence. Vert, a pair of pallets between two opinici passant respecting Or.

The Opinicus as a charge is out of period.

Katrine NicChluarain. Azure, a saltire ermine between four needles palewise argent.

Too close to Backhurst, Papworth pg, 1057 and Hugh of Lincoln, Papworth pg. 1072.

Kouroft Bernard of the East Woods. Sable, a sun eclipsed Or.

Michael of Bree. Quarterly Or and argent, three mullets of six point bendwise purpure.

Olaf Henenson, the Ugly. Gules, a raven (corvus corax) displayed proper.

This is exactly that bourne by the 86th Infantry Division of the US Army, who bear as a shoulder patch: Gules, an Eagle displayed sable, and on the breast thereof an escutheon charged with the Roman letters "B" and "H" for "Blackhawk" Division.

Sholom ben Avram of York. Quarterly sable and vert, in canton a Mogen David argent and Or.

From the Kingdom of the East

Order of the Southern Cross. Argent, a Celtic Cross Humetty patee notched sable.

1) The "Order of the Southern Corss: is a Brazilian order found in 1822 by the Emperor Don Pedro I. It feel into abeyance, and was re-constituted in 1932 (Encyclopaedia Dictionary of Heraldry, Julian Franklyn with John Tanner, Pergenon Press, London, 1970 pp. 308-309)

2) In Our opinion, this is too close in design to historical badges of knightly Orders.

3) The Knights of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., (KSCA) are one order, indivisible. If this group wishes to form an association, let them call it something other than an Order....such as a "Free Company" or an "Association", or whatever. The Crown of the East may, of course, grant them the use of the name "Order of..., but We advise against this, due to the use of such wording in the Society to signify an honour granted and/or recognized by the King and/or Board of Directors.

Locksley,

Laurel
