Karina of the Far West, Laurel Queen of Arms,

to the Heralds of the four Kingdoms,

Greetings.

I regret that I was unable to send an acceptance letter in March. My schedule was interrupted by a period of jury duty.

Acceptances have also been delayed by the problem of collating what written records we have on why a given application was accepted or rejected; Lord Locksley's files were very sketchy in this respect, but Lord Breakstone has been able to assist me. Once this is done, I will send one or more copies to each Kingdom.

"Sejant tergiant" is my best attempt to describe a mouse seated on its haunches, its back turned to the viewer. If anyone can think of a better term I will be delighted to revise the blazon.

RETURNS

EAST

Andros ap Anlawdd. Gules, a baton and in dexter chief a heptacle Or.

This figure is like a pentacle, a thinlined interlaced star polygon but having seven rather than five points. Star polygons "were studied by the Pythagoreans and subsequently engaged the attention of many geometersBoethius, Athelard of Bath, Thomas Bradwardine, archbishop of Canterbury, Johannes Kepler, and others. Mystical properties were assigned to them at an early date." (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th Ed., vol XXII, p. 25). We do not use magical figures.

Anne of Hatfield. Azure, a fillet pall inverted between a mortar and pestle, a unicorn's head couped, and a rose argent debruised by another gules.

This is too complicated, and the Tudor rose must be removed. (It is a Tudor rose, though a counterchange of the usual variety; Boutell, ed. of 1966, says that red on white or vice versa is Tudor.) Start over.

Merlinia the Faye. Per fess abased and invected: sable, a semee of stars au naturel, a tower issuant and in dexter chief a gull countervolant argent; and azure.

The whole thing reeks of magic (and besides, it's a landscape). Start over.

WEST

Arthur of Pretense

His device (Potent, a cock rising) is all right, but his name is not; it sounds like pretence to a throne. Let him find another way of saying he has theatrical interests. Spelling it ce or se is regional variation, not influencing the meaning.

Agmund Hido:lfson Gules, in base four barrulets wavy Or, overall a longship sable sailed argent.

This conflicts with Finnvarr de Taahe. I suggest making the longship Or and putting it in the upper part.

I would have liked to make more marginal comments, but other College matters have divided my attention.

I remain at your service,
