LETTER OF ACCEPTANCES AND REJECTIONS

ACCEPTANCES

The following submissions are accepted by the College of Arms and are registered and entered into the Ordinary and Armorial of the SCA:

ANSTEORRA

Aurelian Rigel. Argent, a bagwyn lodged to sinister pean, orbed, armed, and langued Or, gorged of a chaplet vert with two gladiolus flowers Or, in base a pair of breys, all within a tressure azure.

Virgule's appeal accepted. The bagwyn is cited in the early 16th century and so is admissable as a charge.

Meri En Heh. Augmentation. On a canton azure issuant from base a demi-sun Or within a bordure argent.

The augmentation is to be placed upon the badge of the household, whenever they register an acceptable one. The name means beloved of Heh, the Egyptian god of eternity.

Sean MacFflam of Ravenswood. Sable, in sinister chief a tau cross argent.

Virgule's appeal accepted.

ATENVELDT

Barbara-Katherine of Kenilworth. Badge: Gules, in dexter chief a tower argent, masoned sable, in sinister base a hind trippant Or.

Incorrectly listed under Ansteorra in Conclave Acceptance Letter.

Carl of Carmarthin. Azure, three chevronelles and overall a ram's head caboshed argent, orbed gules.

(Formerly of Caid) Change of field from gules to azure.

Josiah Scorpious. Checky sable and vert, a scorpion queue fourche Or.

Virgules' appeal accepted. Checky, like all divided tinctures, can be of any combination of colors or metals (even ermine variations). If it is of two colors or two metals then it is treated as a color or metal, respectively, with regard to the Rule of Tincture.

Michael the Lucky of Lancaster. Sable, on a pale between two mullets of eight points enlongated to base argent, a sword inverted gules.

Aten's appeal accepted. There is sufficient difference (barely) from the previous stated conflicts.

Philip of Pennskeep. Sable, a fess embattled argent between a billet fesswise and a saltire couped Or.

The blazon was incorrect in the Conclave Acceptances. The word argent was omitted.

Sikhijvala. Badge for House Gehe Candra. Argent, within a wall-less onion-domed pavilion an increscent sable.

Change of blazon from Conclave Acceptance letter.

Raymond the Quiet. Argent, a bendlet between a compass star of eight vert and in bend two hawks volant affrontee fesswise sable.

Incorrectly listed under Ansteorra in Conclave Acceptances Letter.

Viryavan ca Tusnim. Badge. Per chevron azure and sable, in chief three welks 1 and 2 argent, and in base an escallop Or.

Incorrectly listed as device in Conclave Acceptances Letter. His original device is unchanged. This is a badge.

CAID

Ataniel Unesse. Argent, three serpents issuant from fess point in pall inverted, embowed clockwise, gules.

You cannot be of Imladris (also known as Rivendell) as that was a place where only elves dwelt, with the notable exception of Aragorn. Please pick a different place name.

Einar aus Enwelt. Azure, three chevronelles interlaced and in chief a pegasus counter-forcenee, wings addorsed, Or.

Change of blazon.

Jocelyn of Fairfax. Purpure, a winged sea-unicorn palewise, wings addorsed argent within a bordure Or.

Noel Roseaux. Azure, three water lilies fesswise in bend, argent, leaved Or, between two reedstalks bendwise throughout, all within a bordure Or.

Sonnental, Canton of. (Imperial and eastern San Diego Counties); of Calafia, Barony of

EAST

Beau Fleuve, Canton of. (Buffalo/Niagra Falls, NY); of Rhydderich Hael, Barony of.

Calligraphers and Illuminators Guild, Barony of Windmaster's Hill. Badge. Per chevron azure and vert, a boreas blowing in bend surmounted by a quill pen in bend sinister Or.

Note: The quill crosses the breath of the boreas.

David du Lac. Argent, a compass sable, on a chief embattled azure a sword reversed argent.

Change of field from Or to argent.

Gerald de Verre. Argent, a saltire nowy gules, pierced vair.

Virgule's appeal accepted.

Steven Red Cloak. Purpure, a cross wavy argent between four roses Or, barbed and seeded proper.

Virgules appeal accepted.

Thor's Mountain, Barony of. (Knoxville, TN)

Thylacinus of the Frosty Mists. Argent, between two barrulets sable a thylacine couchant guardant proper, orbed and langued gules, all between in pale two lotus heads azure. (Thylacinus cynocephalus)

Appeal accepted with modification of name. The thylacine existed in period and so it can be used, even though it wasn't named until after our period. Since we of course must use the proper but out-of-period name in the blazon, I see no reason that it can't be used as his name, for the sake of canting, so long as it looks like a name and passes the other rules.

Thylacinus of the Frosty Mists. Badge. A thylacine couchant guardant proper, orbed and langued gules. (Thylacinus cynocephalus)

MERIDIES

An Crossaire, Barony of. (Gainesville, Florida)

Arenal, Shire of. (Pensacola, Florida)

Elfrieda Aelfwine, called the Awful. Or, a monster with the body of a catamount and the horns, tail, and wings of a dragon sejant guardant, dexter forepaw raised affrontee, wings elevated and displayed, sable, orbed Or.

Four Winds, Shire of the. (Macon, GA)

John the Bearkiller. Badge for House Bearkiller. Or, a brown bear statant erect proper, muzzled gules, chained sable, juggling three cherries proper. (Ursus arctos)

John of Ean Airgead, called the Mad Celt. Vert, a chimney swift migrant palewise argent. (Chaetura pelagica)

A good example of one-charge arms.

John of Lithia, called Star-Fountain. Bendy sinister sable and gules, on a mullet Or a fountain.

Karl der Wanderer. Gules, a saltire barbed Or.

Each arm of the saltire ends in an arrow barb.

Lionel Hildebrand. Gules, an arrow broken and lashed together bendwise sinister, and in canton a cross fretted throughout Or.

Margala of Dovedale. Vert, a chevron barry dovetailed sable and Or between three sunflowers proper. (Helianthus anuus)

The original drawing wasn't blazonable. The addition of a black tip at the top of the chevron converts it nicely to barry dovetailed.

Ravenwood, Shire of. (Albany/Dougherty, GA)

Rondallyn of Golgotha. Vert, three holly leaves conjoined in pall between three skulls argent, on the point of conjunction a bezant.

Sangre del Sol, Shire of. Argent, a sun gules pierced by a sword inverted sable distilling three gouts de sang, within a laurel wreath vert.

The drops are below the wreath, and the sun and sword are within it. The sword has the arms of the shire on the blade next to the hilt, but that is artistic license.

Seleone, Canton of. (Bay St. Louis, MS); of Axemoor, Barony of.

West Isles, Shire of the. (Clearwater, Florida)

MIDDLE

Alfhild the Mad. Badge for House of Vadash. Azure, in bend a sinister hand pointing sinister and a dexter hand pointing dexter proper and in bend sinister a lymphad and a lymphad reversed, flags flying, sails furled and oars in motion sternwards, both fesswise Or.

Andros ap Anlawdd. Gules, a baton sinister and in canton a mullet of seven points voided and interlaced Or.

Hereafter mullets of any number of points may be voided and interlaced except for five points, which is still forbidden. They should be blazoned in this manner. There is enough ill feeling about the pentagram to keep it out under the offensive clause. The appeal by Virgule is accepted.

Crossing of the Red Spears, March (Shire) of the. (Toledo, OH)

Eoforwic, Shire of. (Toronto, Ontario)

Eoforwic, Shire of. Argent, a sword sable debruised by a chevron cotised gules bearing three trillium flowers argent, seeded Or, barbed vert, in canton a laurel wreath proper.

Appeal by Virgule accepted. These are the stylized trilliums used by Ontario, and hence they are blazonable piecewise, rather than as proper. That way no genus or species are needed.

Flaming Gryphon, Barony of the. (SW Ohio & Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati)

Flaming Sword, March (Shire) of the. (Middletown, OH); of Flaming Gryphon, Barony of the.

Gwyntarion, Shire of. (Kent, OH)

Illiton, Shire of. (Peoria, IL)

Iron Demons, March (Shire) of the. (Youngstown, OH)

Kazimierez Zdzislav. Per chevron sable and gules, fimbriated Or, in chief a point dexter conjoined with a point sinister, in base an eagle displayed argent, armed, langed, membered, and crowned with a maple leaf Or.

The eagle is similar to that in the arms of Poland, but that is up to the artist.

Kirsten von der Wald. Per bend argent and azure, two bendlets counterchanged, in sinister chief a rose gules, barbed and seeded, slipped and leaved proper, and in dexter base three crosses fleury Or.

The crosses are by default palewise in bend.

Lessa of the Wierde Beasties. Argent, a monarch butterfly displayed proper. (Monarchus monarchus)

Martelle von Baecker. Per bend vert and argent, a martlet and a cluster of grapes counterchanged.

Incorrectly listed under Atenveldt in the Conclave Letter.

Menken Brechen. Per bend sinister gules and checky sable and argent, in dexter chief a fleur-de-lis above in pale three billets Or.

Michel de Belgique. Argent, a ram passant and on a chief sable a label argent.

Virgule's appeal accepted. A label is a charge just like any other; and may be so used. In the SCA it is NOT a mark of cadence, as THERE IS NO CADENCY IN THE SCA!

Thomas von Langenfeld. Vert, a fess Or, in chief three bezants fesswise Or, in base a becket statant proper.

You cannot be Thomas Becket von Langevenfeld as that is too close to St. Thomas a Becket. Even though your mundane name is Thomas R. Becket Langenfeld, other people would be offended, not knowing that. Either drop the Becket or the Thomas. What does the R. stand for? Wny not use that instead of Thomas?

Todric ban Raullsohn Koenig. Per chevron sable and argent, in chief two alembics crossed in saltire at the tips argent and in base a flame proper.

Tsivia ben Tamara of Amberview. Azure, a camel passant sinister Or, carrying in its mouth three white trilliums proper and chained by the neck to a doe camel couchant Or and on a chief embattled argent a sun wavy gules.

Incorrectly listed under Atenveldt in the Conclave Letter.

William MacBruithein the Wilde. Sable, a sharpened wooden stake bendwise sinister surmounted by a mushroom proper. (Laecaria ochesopurpurea)

Winged Hills, March (Shire) of the. (Dayton, OH)

WEST

Cristina Giuliana Dell'Onda. Per pale sable and gules, a dolphin hauriant and in chief an increscent and an estoille argent.

Cynagua, Principality of. (East California and Nevada)

Grun der Spitzenkloppler. Barry engrailed Or and vert, a cartouche pointed in chief and base counterchanged.

Appeal accepted with this reblazon.

Gwenafara the Dragon Maker. Argent, a dragon doll counter-salient bendy compony gules and paly of 20 gules and sable, and compony paly of 20 sable and gules, and gules, armed and crined vert, orbed Or, standing on a mount vert.

This is a stuffed dragon doll made of a tartan fabric in the rob roy style. This is the only blazonable tartan I know of and it is not owned by any clan. Only a cloth charge can be blazoned as this form of tartan.

Hroar Bjarnarsonr. Sable, four piles conjoined in cross enarched gurgewise clockwise gules, fimbriated Or.

This means the pile from chief is enarched to dexter, that from dexter is enarched to base, that from base is enarched to sinister, and that from sinister is enarched to chief, as if along a clockwise gurges.

Margarita del Bosque. Or, seme of Jerusalem Pine Trees, overall a daisy flower proper. (pinus halepensia, Bellis perennis)

Marigold Rose. Per bend gules and argent, on a fess vert between a marigold blossom Or and a rose gules, barbed and seeded proper, a unicorn couchant argent.

Meriwether of the Four Winds. Badge. Azure, a gryphon's head erased above four mullets, three and one, Or.

Robert of Dunharrow. Or, on a pile inverted vert, tipped indented a horse counter-courant argent.

Reblazon and simplification of arms.

Robert of Dunharrow. Augmentation: A canton of the Order of the Silver Molet fimbriated gules.

Robert of Dunharrow. Augmentation: A sinister canton of the arms of the Exchequer of the West.

Notice that the augmentations are listed separately. The original arms are unchanged unless, as in this case, they are modified to make room for augmentations. The bearer of the arms still retains the right to display the original arms if desired.

Russell Red Lion. Per fess arched gules and Or, a lion rampant contourne grasping in its sinister forepaw a caduceus counterchanged.

Russell is in the mundane world a licensed doctor. Only a real doctor can register a caduceus or a staff of aesculapius in a device.

Tancred de Galicia. Argent, a sagittary trippant proper and a lion rampant contourne gules, on a chief three crescents, above the central crescent a label, argent.

This is the arms of his mother with the addition of a label as the one point of difference required plus the consent of the original arms bearer. As we are not using cadence per se it is acceptable to put a label on the mother's arms as well as the father's.

Thomas of Hassard. Tierced per bend sinister argent, azure, and sable, a comet fesswise reversed Or.

REJECTIONS

The following submissions are rejected for the stated reasons:

ANSTEORRA

Allemandus Draconis.

Incorrectly listed under Middle in the Conclave Letter. Conflicts with Aldewinkle: Argent, a cross patee gules, and others (Papworth p.605). Suggest adding a chief gules. Currently there is only one point of difference.

Erasimierz Waspanieski, known as Greyraven.

Virgule's appeal denied. The device is a form of dimidiation by quartering. No marshalling is allowed. It is also too complex to adequately blazon short of actually calling it dimidiation by quarters. Simplify and resubmit.

Frank the Illiterate Scribe.

Incorrectly listed under Middle in the Conclave Letter. Conflicts with Delaray: Argent, a sun in splendour gules (Papworth p.1096).

Ivivis of Cornwall.

Incorrectly listed under Middle in Conclave Letter. Infringes upon the Province of the Sun, Atenveldt: Argent, a fireball proper within a laurel wreath azure. For your information Ivivis is not Cornish but Nehwocese.

Jon St. Vincent d'Outremer.

Incorrectly listed under Middle in the Conclave Letter. Too close to Master Beverly Hodghead: Azure, a cross argent, overall an anchor and an arrow in saltire Or. Also close to Aylesbury, etc.: Azure, a cross argent. The emblazon shows the cross too narrow, redraw it wider or call it some diminutive of a cross.

Steppes, Barony of the.

Virgule's appeal denied. The arms of branches must have at least one laurel wreath as a major charge. Nothing else may, including badges and flags of branches. Remove the laurel wreath and resubmit without it or with some other charge.

ATENVELDT

Ealasaid MacGhillielaidir.

Incorrectly listed under Middle in Conclave Letter. Knotwork is not, by and large, heraldic. A few simple knots have made it into mundane heraldry (e.g. Bowen knot) or into Society heraldry by definition and the circulation of drawings (e.g. Donnelly knot), but your elaborate interlace cannot be described or defined. Please start over without the interlace.

Kentaurus, Barony of.

Incorrectly listed under the Middle in the Conclave Letter. The name conflicts with the Province of Ceantyre in the Kingdom of the West.

CAID

Hagar Hagarson the Bear.

There is no such thing as bendy sinister of five sable and gules. This is sable, two scarpes gules, which is color on color. If you must have black and red diagonals, make it bendy sinister sable and gules by adding a third gules scarpe at the bottom, giving six stripes. All divided fields must be divided into an even number of pieces, if only two tinctures are used.

Llew Wolvenkin.

You cannot have a sun in splendour proper, unless you can mount an arc lamp on your shield. In this case it is only a sun, as there is no face. Since the field is argent and the sun is colored Or, this is metal on metal. A broad sable fimbriation of the sun would setle the problem. Better would be a red sun, as fimbriation is a makeshift way of avoiding violations of the Rule of Tincture. You still have the problem of only the fimbriation showing up.

EAST

Allanda de Warrick. Or, a saltirel sable, overall a butterfly sable winged azure.

This conflicted with Rodney of El Dorado, who had Or, a saltire sable, overall a unicorn rampant Or, orbed, langued, crined and ungules gules. The differences were one point for a butterfly instead of the unicorn and a half point for the width of the saltire, which was not enough. When you take off one charge and replace it with another you only get one point of difference, even if you change the type of charge, the color, and the position. Your new version in your appeal is: Or, a saltire azure, overall a butterfly sable winged azure. This is now two points different from Rodney, but it conflicts with Alderford: Or, a saltire azure, and others (Papworth p.1059). You have one point of difference for the butterfly. You need something else. Normally I would say that the addition of a major overall charge to an ordinary such that the new charge becomes the primary charge and the ordinary is relegated to a secondary charge would add the necessary half point of difference due to the change in status of the ordinary. But in your case the azure wings are on top of an azure saltire and so they vanish, leaving only the body, which is not a sufficiently major addition to the saltire. If you will change the saltire to yet another color (say gules, vert or purpure) or change the color of the wings, then I will accept the device. As drawn you really have the butterfly on the saltire, rather than overall, and so it is a case of color on color, and worse yet, azure on azure.

Genevieve des Coeurs. Vert, a tree erased Or charged with eight hearts gules.

Ioseph of Locksley has: Vert, a tree eradicated argent. You have one point of difference for the tincture of the tree. The additions of the small hearts and the erased rather than eradicated do not really give a full point of difference. Many people would assume you were related to Master Ioseph. I suggest that you either change the color of the field or add another major charge, such as a bordure. Virgule's appeal is denied.

Merloren the Hermit. Per chevron azure and sable, in chief a crescent between two sprigs of oak and in base an owl close guardant argent.

Your name is too similar to Merlin the Hermit, which was one of the names of Merlin Ambrosius, the Druid Magician advisor to King Arthur. Your device heightens this similarity by using many of the symbols associated with druids and Merlin specifically, such as the owl. You can use Merlin if you difference it sufficiently, such as Merlin the Blacksmith, and if your device does not look like that of a druid. If you chose a different name the device would pass.

MERIDIES

Golden Unicorn, Canton of the. (Wellington, AL)

This conflicts with the Shire of the Unicorn in Indiana in the Middle Kingdom.

House Firedrake. Azure, the figurehead of the Oseburg dragonship Or.

Redraw the badge so that it is not an exact copy of the Oseburg vessel's figurehead.

Heather of Tyson. Argent, a collie dog sejant reversed within an orle sable voided Or.

My sources seem to indicate that the collie is out of period, being bred in the late 17th century. If you can prove that it existed in period then you can have it. Otherwise pick a different dog.

Joda of Maynard. Badge for House of the Flaming Serpent. Sable, a horned and eared serpent glissant nowed reversed Or in flames issuant from base gules.

Except that you don't have this. That's as close as I can come to your wildly involved and coiled serpent. Please redraw the badge with the serpent in a standard heraldic position for snakes.

Seamus McCryu McHoo. Gules, two water buffalo horns conjoined at the bases Or, each involved of a king cobra erect and displayed sable, overall a sword inverted argent.

I am informed that Mc is out of period, and that Mac is the proper form. I will register your name as Seamus MacCryu MacHoo if you want.

The cobras are mostly on the gules field and this is color on color.

Wynnemeade, Canton of. (Schriever, LA)

This conflicts with the Canton of Wyndemeade in the Kingdom of the West.

Zan Andreas of the Blue Cave. Azure, a lightning flash bedwise sinister Or between two snowflakes argent.

Your name is too close to San Andreas, and I am sure that everyone knows of the San Andreas Fault out here. If you drop the Zan the rest is fine. Your device is fine.

MIDDLE

Cein Throm MacAdam of Delara.

Incorrectly listed under Atenveldt in the Conclave Letter. Your name conflicts with the infamous Cain, son of Adam, from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. Drop the Cein or the MacAdam.

Dearnehealde. (Athens, OH)

What does it mean? Translation not given.

Egil Vidarsson.

Incorrectly listed under Atenveldt in the Conclave Letter. This is lovely, but it looks like dimidiation, which we do not allow. We suggest seme or geometric arrangement of stars, not a simple per pale line of division, and no constellations.

Mithralius lev "dhu Dablin" Voronin.

Incorrectly listed under Atenveldt in the Conclave Letter. This conflicts with Astrid of Hawk Ridge: Sable, a lion's head cabossed Or within fourteen suns in annulo gules, fimbriated Or. Also with Dernley: Sable, a sun in splendour Or, and others (Papworth p.1100).

Murye Holt, Shire of the.

What you have drawn is Argent, an earthen chalice within two oak leaves conjoined in annullo, fructed in base of five acorns, all proper, even though you call them wreaths of two laurel leaves. The arms of a branch must have the standard laurel wreath. No substitutions. Laurel leaves are long and pointed with no curves like an oak leaf.

Shinaedha Bebhinn.

Your owl is in trian aspect (i.e. in three-quarters view). You have to make it either close guardant or affrontee. if you turn it to close guardant, it will conflict with Piers Howell de Cambria: Azure, an owl close guardant Or perched on a rock argent. Therefore I suggest you have it close affrontee. If you want, you can have it looking to sinister.

Solomon ben Jacob the Levite. Or, billety sable, a squirrel sejant erect azure.

This conflicts with the counterchange of Walters: Azure, a squirrel sejant Or. (Papworth p.97) Try counter sejant.

Solange of Soleil. Vert, upon a bezant a trefoil vert, within a bordure Or.

This conflicts with Adayand Aniantai: Vert, a bezant eclipsed by a decrescent vert voided Or. The bordure is one point. The small trefoil versus the voided decrescent is not a full point, as they are secondary charges, small, and are both vert. Change something or add something.

Tameichi Takeda. Gules, on a fess argent a delf gules, surmounted by a delf per saltire argent charged with a delf sable pierced argent.

This is six layers, which is too much. If you remove the sable delf pierced argent I will pass the thing. Right now it is op art, not heraldry.

Torin Earthsheart. Gyronny of five, gules, purpure, vert, sable, and azure, overall a mullet Or.

This conflicts with Hammil: Gules, a mullet Or, and others (Papworth p.990). The field is one point. You need something else. If you add a bordure argent you will have all of the tinctures, although its a little tacky.

Torpe Mago. Azure, six annulets conjoined in annulo and on a chief argent a lightning flash Or, fimbriated azure.

Your name isn't a name, it's an epithet. It means Clumsy Wizard, although it should be Mago Torpe. You need a given name. You could be Juan El Mago Torpe, as an example. I would prefer to avoid the fimbriation but its legal, so your device is passable. You will have to change the name.

WEST

Mika.

First of all you need a surname or modifier. You have submitted the quartered arms of your parents, Theodulf of Borogrove and Anne of Caerdydd. In the mundane world for you to use such a combination would imply that both of your parents are dead, which they are not. However, in the Society we do not have inheritance of arms, and we do not allow marshalling. Each person should register their own personal device. Quartering of Society arms would violate the rule of simplicity in too many cases to allow it. It is the opinion of the College of Arms that quartering of arms in the SCA is not allowed, nor may a device appear to do so. Therefore a device may not be Quarterly or per pale, unless it is obvious that the device is not quartered or impaled arms. Quartering also cannot be used for badges, as impaling is allowed there and that is sufficient. There is nothing to stop you from wearing a costume with the quartered arms of your parents. Just do not try to register such as your device with the College. Choose your own device.

OTHER BUSINESS

Mistress Sikhijvala has appealed the College's decision on multiple personas for one person. After consultation, her appeal has been denied. The policy of the College of Arms shall remain that the College of Arms under the Laurel Sovereign of Arms is a corporate body similar to the Registry. We deal with the actual twentieth century people, not their personas. Each submission is registered to a real person or group at a real address. Each twentieth century person can register one device under one society name. If the person changes the society name, the old device is registered under the new society name, unless the person simultaneously changes the device as well, and vise versa. A person may register more than one badge, and may designate them to households, alternate personas, etc., but they are filed under the society name listed for the device of that twentieth century person. In the opinion of the College, it's the twentieth century person who actually did the work for which they received arms. Therefore a person may not be granted two different arms by a King under two different persona. A Second Award of Arms to a person is meaningless, as they are already armigerous at that rank, and can only have one set of arms. Were it otherwise a person could, by changing personas, wind up being knighted two or three times, given several Awards or Grants of Arms, become a Count twice, belong to the Order of the Laurel more than once, etc. This is clearly contrary to the good of the Society and to the honor and seriousness of these awards and ranks. Thus one society name and one device/arms per body or corporate entity, as far as registration with with the College and listing in the Order of Precedence of a kingdom.

Pray believe, My Lords and Ladies, that I remain

Your Servant,

Wilhelm von Schlussel
