REJECTIONS

THE KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA

Andeleon du Axegarth.

This conflicts with Celny (Papworth, p. 1971), Scarbar (p. 216), and many others. We recommend you use another charge instead of two fleurs-de-lis argent.

Erasimierz Waspanieski.

Device: Please document both the "Cross of St. James" and the "cross potent fitchy," which in our understanding shouldn't have curved arms. Badge: Your emblazon is lovely; it looks like an embroidery pattern; but we doubt it is heraldry, particularly since none of the heralds who had not seen the emblazon could visualize it from the blazon. If you can document it, please do; if not, and if you are really fond of it, resubmit and perhaps we can register it as a "Waspanieski cross."

Godfrey Fosse.

Do you want a tamandua (anteater, South America) or an aardvark (antbear, South Africa)?

Gwilym y Fferill o Caer Lleuad.

Conflict with the counterchange of Pym (Papworth, p. 4), Argent, an annulet sable.

Melusine Whitcroft the Petite.

We have yet to see documentation that "Melusine" can be the name of a human being. Please take another personal name, at least for the duration, and resubmit. The device appear to be all right.

Meri en Heh.

Cartouches are reserved for the Pharaoh. We cannot find these hieroglyphs in Egyptian references. Please document.

Philosophers' Guild, Bjornsberg.

We cannot find any documentation for the "Silesian anvil"; we wrote as for it and received no answer. Would you prefer an ordinary anvil? Why an anvil for a Philosophers' Guild?

Tuau-a Tuit

Your sword argent on field or is metal on metal. Please redesign.

THE KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Amayot of Aragon.

The charge shown isn't a cross pattee, but looks like a Latin cross with serifs. What about a plain cross (throughout by default)?

Athelwulf Bolverkerson.

Conflicts with Richard of Thistleshire - Or, in saltire two thistles proper overall a cross crossletted of the upper three gules; and Brak of the Eagles' Eyrie-Sable, a saltire gules fimbriated and overall an eagles sinister wing argent; as well as Worcester, Massachsettes.

Cein Throm MacAdam of Delara.

There already was one Cain son of Adam, and that was quite enough.

Dafydd of Emmett.

Conflicts with Brakenberry - Argent, three chevrons braces azure (Papworth, p. 548).

Egil Vidarsson.

This is very lovely, but it looks like dimidiation, which we don't allow. We suggest semee or geometric arrangement of stars, not a simple per-pale line of division, and no constellations.

Heinrich der Jaeger.

Conflicts with Ian Michael - Gules, a unicorn countersalient or, attired, crined, and unguled argent.

Gareth of Bloodwine Gorge.

Is the surgeon's, or chirurgeon's, knot in period? The earliest attestation we could find in the OED was about 1827, but perhaps you can find an example of it in period. It seems likely. If you can, please resubmit.

Ilana Amante.

Conflicts with Abenhall - Gules, a fess or (Papworth, p. 705).

Ioseph of Locksley.

Your badge conflicts with Ireland, Arts, and so on. Difference it by adding a field or in some other fashion.

Ketrieva Segovia for la Villa del Halcon Blanco.

Conflicts with Stalton - Sable, an eagle volant argent (Papworth, pg. 309).

Kristen von der Hand-Falk.

A fountain has six bars. There is a visual conflict with Alair of the Bloody Fountain - Sable, a roundel barry wavy argent gules and azure. You could difference it with a different field (not sable), or change the color of the castle.

Megan of the Misty Isles.

Your fuchsia is a modern horticultural variety; find one in period.

Michael the Lucke of Lancaster.

Conflicts with Katherine of Northhall and Pwyll pen Tyrhon - Sable, on a pale argent a decrescent gules. Please redesign or start over (avoiding red roses).

Mirendil Thoroduin of Alardas.

Wavy-crested is out of period. Please find another division. Check for conflict with Charlette Keri O'Donnelle-Per fess azure and vert, a gull volant and in dexter chief an estoile argent.

Mithralius lev "Dhu Sablin" Voronin.

Conflicts with Astrid of Hawk Ridge - Sable, within 14 suns in annulo gules fimbriated or, a lions head cabossed or; and others in the Society and with Dernley - Sable, a sun in splendor or (Papworth, p. 1100); and other mundanes.

Nommad the Barbarian.

You can be a nomad, or a barbarian, or both, but you must still have a personal name, the sort your mother gave you in the cradle (or whatever your nomadic mother put you in).

Owlwise.

Conflicts with Auberon Cirin - Or, an annulet azure, overall a swan migrant palewise proper; and Leonus the Rotund - Azure, a lion countersailient queue fourchee piercing an annulet or.

Radon of Ered Isen.

"Radon" is not the name of a person but of a radioactive inert gas, and was not coined until long after our period.

Salene of Mightrinwood.

This does not conform to the drawing of the floweret of Stanleya pinna in Laurel's copy of DEATH VALLEY WILDFLOWERS. Please document.

Tearlach the Down.

Conflicts with Elkes -- Argent, a saltire gules (Papworth p. 1057).

William of Llanloch.

What you put in your emblazon is not a lotus but some other flower. Please put a lotus on the emblazon or give the name of your flower.

Wotan du Roc.

Wotan is a variant of Odin. We are all human beings here. Also, ought not your Indian, or at least Middle-Eastern, roc to be carrying an Indian rather than an African elephant?

Zoe Ellesabeth of Aleandria.

Conflicts with Wasborne - Argent, a cross hummetty voided azure (Papworth, p. 603), not to mention skating near Sweden and Finland.

FOR THE KINGDOM OF THE EAST

Adelicia of Rideja.

Close to Arlin, who has a pegasus courant affrontee, wings displayed, argent.

AEleric Basiliskus.

You cannot be "the Basilisk." (The term is a Greek adjective meaning "resembling a king," which was later applied to a nonhuman monster.) Though you can't be a basilisk, you can have one on your device, but the charge drawn is not a basilisk; it's closer to a wingless wyvern coiled. Please do a little research and resubmit, having changed (1) your name, (2) either your blazon or your emblazon.

Aithine nic Merril.

Badge for House "Schola Talpa et Serpens": What kind of snake is it you want? "Ophiobolus" is a wheat fungus. And the proper Latin for "School of the Mole and the Serpent" is Schola Talpae et Serpentis. If you're going to be fancy, get it right.

Alan of the Bright Lands.

Conflicts with Helmer Marcellus, Sable, a leatherback or. Try changing the color of the charge.

Alexandre sur Mer.

The Convocation's consensus was that a compass-rose is probably all right. We have already passed several "compass-stars" a term invented for the very common Society charge of "a mullet of four greater and four lesser points..." But what you have here is much too complex for any heraldic charge of our period. Please simplify. According to THE AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR (Nataniel Bowditch, 1966 ed. p. 23), a compass rose of twelve points was common usage in the Middle Ages and ancient documents testify to wind roses of four to twelve winds. If you want more than twelve you will have provide documentary proof.

Alfgar the Sententious. Badge.

Conflicts with the Calygreyhonde badge of DeVere, Earls of Oxford, HERALDIC IMAGINATION p. 153.

Alfred of Eddystone.

Nice try. You can't have the Eddystone Light in your name AND your arms!

Allanda de Warwick.

Conflicts with Rodney of El Dorado, Or, on a saltire sable a unicorn forcene or, crined, unguled, langued, orbed, and armed gules.

Aloysia Cait-dubh.

Color on color: the cat must be either fimbriated or changed to argent or or.

Alric Bowbreaker of the High March.

Badge 1 looks like a crown, which is not allowed. Badge 2: please resubmit with a blazon the heralds can understand and/or include a picture.

Alvaro de Santiago.

Conflicts with St. Cleer, Per pale or and azure, two suns counterchanged.

Amberlands, Canton.

Both name and device are lifted from Zelazny's NINE PRINCES IN AMBER and however many sequels there are by now, both fictional and magical. This is not suitable for a branch of the Society.

Asenath Chamberly of Morrismount.

Iris versicolor is the wild blue flag; the iris on your emblazon is some cultivated variety. Please find the appropriate species name and resubmit so we can pass it; it's gorgeous.

Ashantal, Shire. Formerly Aachental.

Conflicts with Clovia Lumi, Sable, a snowflake argent.

Aster, Shire of. Device and badge.

Both submissions conflict with the Barony of Three Mountains, mundane Herst, etc. Rather than an "estoile argent", call it an aster, or whatever kind of flower you want, proper. And a laurel wreath proper will not be color on color as a laurel wreath vert is.

Benedict Alorak d'Elcar.

This is too busy. All that on a gem? There is no "proper" for chalcedony. Please simplify the charges, use heraldic tinctures, and resubmit.

Berengar von Myrkheim.

A gyronny is of eight by default. What is pommely? That cartouche is pretty small. Unless there is a very good reason we dislike tertiary charges, as they are too small to be seen from a distance.

Bohemund von Traellernfels.

Conflicts with Semon, Azure, a griffin passant argent (Papworth, pg. 981).

Bridge, Barony of the.

Actually, you've drawn a Cinnamon Bear instead of a Brown Bear, in but in this case we shall take the will for the deed. The laurel wreath is not visible; place it around the bear.

Bruce the Bold.

Conflicts with Jerald of Galloway-Or, a battleaxe gules, hafted sable within a double tressure sable-in the Society and with several people in Papworth.

Bryn Madoc, Shire.

The device is acceptable; the name is not. "The myth of the 'Welsh Indians' reputed to be the descendents of a colony founded about AD 1170 by Prince Madoc (well known from Southey's poem) has been studied by James Moone (American Anthrop. Iv., 1891, 393-394), who traced its development from statements in an article in The Turkish Spy, published in London about 1730.) (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th ed., 1910, article by Alexander F. Chamberlain, "Indians, North American," Vol. XIV, p. 452.) To name the Shire after St. Brendan would be acceptable, as the legend of his having made a similar voyage is in period.

Cecily of Middleham.

The original Cecily of Middleham, Cicely Neville, the Rose of Raby, was Duchess of York and the mother of two kings. And the device conflicts with Souter, Azure, a chevron cotised argent (Papworth, p. 407).

Cinnhill MacAlpin.

Conflicts with Tudor-Azure, a lion rampant or (Papworth, p. 72), and Meydor (Rietstaap). It is hard to get any kind of lion, doing anything that doesn't conflict with someone. Please try again.

Confederation, The.

There have been too many Confederations for the name to stand by itself. Please contrive to call it "The Confederation of Something" or "The Something Confederation." The device is iffy-the use of fimbriation metal on metal is legal, but not really advisable; the device will be indistinguishable at a dozen paces, which is why the rule of tincture was formulated; but it is so pretty that the Convocation couldn't find it in its collective heart to reject it. Please submit with a more complete name.

Cyn Mynydd, Canton.

In the first place, your name actually mean "before, previous to the mountain." This would probably conflict with our "Human beings only" rule. "Beside the mountain" is "Wrth yr Mynydd." The device conflicts with Tir Ysgithr, Azure, within a laurel wreath or on a roundel or a boar's head sinister couped close sable, armed argent.

David Hawkwood.

Conflicts with Thorvald inn Grimmi, Argent, a hawk stooping within an annulet gules. Only one point of difference; you must have two full points of difference from another Society device.

Deviant Scholars, Household of the.

Conflicts with Malkin Grey and Vassillissa Koshkovna Nakhodchivaya, and besides it is blatantly offensive: the bibliophiles among us cringe at this as at an unedited print of The Chainsaw Murders. Start over.

Dierdre ne Armagh.

Conflicts with Allenson, Azure, a chevron argent.

East Kingdom.

Badge for the King's Champion: conflicts with Kerroignant.

East Kingdom.

Badge for the Queen's Champion: Conflicts with Anne-Dudley de Brandhard, Azure, a sword inverted proper surmounted by a lyre or, stringed argent and Barbara Fitzhugh de Brandhard.

East-Mere, Shire.

The laurel wreath, technically proper, is in fact green and green on blue doesn't show up. That's why we have the rule of tincture, so that charges will be visible. We suggest that you make the laurel wreath or or argent.

Edvard van Reisling.

Conflicts with Alys of the Midnight Rose, Or a rose slipped and leaved azure. Also Reisling is a branch of the Kingdom of Caid and you are an Easterner.

Elestron a'n Tor Howlsedhas.

This is color on color. There is no such field division as "per pile" and the device reduces to Sable, a pile vert, etc.

Enderil of the Reach.

That is not the eye of a Siamese cat: the pupil is round and much too much white shows. Please decide whether you want a cat's eye or what you have drawn, and let us know.

Eomer of the Lion's Heads.

Conflicts with Jehane de Lyonesse-Vert, a lion's head affrontee or, orbed vert.

Eromene Aspasia.

Aspasia was the eromene (female lover) of Pericles. Nothing in this name distinguishes the applicant from the historical person. Heraldic convention has leaves shown outsized. We suggest the trees be fructed or in bloom to distinguish it from Rowan-Lynn.

Fenris of Twycross.

Your device is all right; the blazon should properly read Or, a crescent sable, in chief a mullet of four points azure, all within a bordure sable. Please document the name Fenris as used by anyone other than two fearful and fictional wolves.

Ferel of Frisia.

This is rejected as being offensive to the sensibilities of many.

Fernando Salazar y Perez.

Conflicts with Seitse-Vert, mullety argent pierced vert. You need two points difference.

Fiona Greenmantle.

This is not blazonable. Try a lioness with a rose in base.

Freyjaethe na Barra.

The Dryas flower, also called Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala) is white. We can't find any documentation of a yellow variety. If you can, send it in; or find out what this actually is and let us know.

Gavin Reynes.

Too busy; you must simplify. We recommend no chief, no suns, and nothing on the chevron.

Giovanna Maria Hunyadi di Ghiberti (formerly Elessar Hunyadi).

Your name as changed is acceptable, but crowns, sundiscs, and so on are reserved to royal arms. The device would be acceptable without the sundisc.

Gregor Barrelchest.

Conflicts with Belgrave-Argent, a cross pattee fitchee sable (Papworth, p. 607), not to mention Dorothea of Caer-Myrddin - Argent, a cross formy sable. Since you need two points of difference from the latter, perhaps you should start over.

Gwyneth merch Macsen.

The device is acceptable; the name is not. Macsen, or Magnus Clemens Maximius, was a Roman general born in Spain, led an insurrection in Britain in 383, was Emperor of Rome from 383 to 388, and was killed by the Byzantines. He became the Welsh semi-mythical figure Macsen. You cannot claim to be his daughter.

Gwynneth the Seeker.

False heraldry: (1) What color is the cross? (2) a device is not shown on a roundel; (3) the pellet is color on color; (4) is the bordure fimbriated? Finally, our Welsh expert tells us your first name is properly spelled Gwynedd, and that "the Seeker" is "y Ymofynnydd" or "yr Chwilliwr". Just in case you care to rework your name in resubmitting your device.

Harold Helmsson.

Badge for Haraldstad: Too close to the banner of Gondor.

Iain macNeill Dunnceann a' Chnuic Ghuirm.

Please rework your emblazon; as it is your Wake knot is composed of one body with two heads and one body with two tails, and both those greyhounds are going to be extremely frustrated.

Igerne d'Annot.

Conflicts with Leonus de Rotund: Azure, a lion counter-salient queue-fourchee piercing an annulet or.

James of Worcestershire.

Even with three heads that is much too much like the Imperial Eagle. A triple-headed eagle was reserved for the Holy Roman Emperor. Start over.

Joes of the Doves.

Your wreath of ivy looks too much like the laurel wreath used for branches of the Society. If you make it extremely large (use "overall" rather than "surmounted by"), so that it is plainly not a laurel wreath, even when seen halfway across the field, it will probably be all right. Please resubmit.

Johanna Dudley.

This device has color on color in a minor sort of way. See also the device passed under this name, which is very similar. Both applications were processed by the Heralds at the same time, and neither was dated. The other was passed as marginally preferable. If Johanna would much rather have this one, we will exchange them.

John of the Heather, the Black, called Black John.

Conflicts with several Society arms, chiefly Grane the Golden: Sable, three stalks of wheat as in a garb or.

Joseph Gadjos of Bratislava.

Counterchange of Orsato.

Kale Harlansson.

You can't have a collar if the hard is cabossed; there's no neck to hang it from. And the blue hammer, though technically color on fur is admissible, vanishes against the black background of the pean. Try again.

Katherine of Gilliesfleur.

Specify genus, species, and color of gillyflowers. Semee must be regular, and all the flowers must be in the same alignment.

Ketil of the Middle Mountains.

    1. Conflicts with Ablehall, Gules, a fess or (Papworth p. 705). (2) the mountain range looks like a crown.

Landreau the Unfinished.

For an in-period anvil see Jost Amman's BOOK OF TRADES. A sword breaker is a weapon with a short heavy blade; the one shown on the emblazon has a very long blade. Stone's GLOSSARY OF ARMS AND ARMOUR state that all the specimens known are believed to be forgeries.

Larisa iz Kieva.

Your daisy chain is in trian aspect, which is very late in heraldry and which the Society doesn't use. Redraw so that the daisy chain is seen, as it were, from above, or if that is awkward to fit on your chief, a row fesswise of three to five daisies.

Liseta Morales y Cabezon.

If you can date the "Afghan Bands," aka Moebius strip, to period, you may have it. It's an old magician's proper (prestidigitator, as opposed to necromancer, and hence permissible) and may well date back far enough. Please let us know.

Malvoisin de Seine.

Malvoisin is a surname; you need a first name, such as Jean or something else Maman would have given you in the cradle. While you're at it, rewrite your blazon so as to avoid the term "debruised", which is properly used for animals; "surmounted" for non-animals.

Mara Tudora Kolarova.

This isn't heraldry. And those aren't morning glories; they look like trumpet bells. Please redesign.

Medius Fidius Caldaeus.

We are emphatically NOT rejecting this device, which is beautiful. But you are going to need a new or at least modified name; that isn't Latin or anything else we can recognize. When resubmitting, use this for the for blazon: Azure, a sun in glory or, surmounted by a base enhanced per pale argent and sable charged with a cauldron counterchanged.

Merloren the Hermit.

Everything in this device is a druidic symbol. We could register an owl or an oak sprig or a crescent, but the combination is just too much. Pick one and combine it with another charge to make it less magical.

Milo de Lagrange.

Color on color; the feather also does not show up. Redesign.

Misty the Sprite, or Windsprite.

Conflicts with Tamsin of the Raven Tresses, Gyronny of sixteen or and azure, a roundel or.

Mona de la Lievre.

We need the genus and species of the hare proper. Do you want Lepus timidus, the European hare, or an American species? Your emblazon looks more like a rabbit. The common European rabbit, which is also the common domesticated rabbit and is feral in parts of North American-the Peter Rabbit type of rabbit-is Sylvilagus cuniculus cuniculus. Please let us know what kind of lagomorph you want.

Mountain Freehold, Shire of.

Please document the kelpie.

Murdoch MacAndrew of Highlands' Light.

Conflicts with Dale the Small-Gules, a sword palewise point in base or, on a chief or 3 lozenges azure.

Nicholas of Thyme.

You can't have a single endorse; see Parker's GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN HERALDRY under Endorse and Cottice. In any case the device conflicts with Brian MacColin-Gules, a pale or between a gearwheel and a pelican, wings elevated and addorsed both argent.

Nordwald, Canton.

Conflicts with Thomas of the Pines-Argent, a chevron azure between three pine trees sable.

Redwulf.

You must have a surname or place name. When you resubmit, blazon it Argent, a wolf passant, on a chief gules four piles conjoined in in point throughout or.

Rhydderich Hael, Shire.

The way you have the laurel wreath on a roundel, it looks like someone's personal device with an augmentation of the Society (not accepted in current usage). Remove the roundel and put the wreath on properly; it should be larger and of a contrasting tincture so that it will be visible. Counterchanged would be fine. Meanwhile our resident Welshman says: "Rhydd = free, loose, liberal, radical. The ending -erich is unfamiliar to me. Hael = generous, liberal. Perhaps if I knew what they were trying to say?"

Sarrant the Myopic.

This is too complex for Society heraldry. Please simplify.

Setanta an Chasur.

Conflicts with Alfgar the Sententious-Sable, a pegasus rampant argent on a chief argent a stag's attire fesswise sable. Setana, who became Chuhulian, was a Celtic god. This is the only known use of the name Setana.

Silver Phoenix, Shire of the.

You must have a laurel wreath; two sprigs of laurel are not sufficient, particularly when they are so small and green against black. We suggest a laurel wreath argent, in chief, and large enough to be seen.

Solak Vaslovic.

This is color on color. Please redesign so as to obey the laws of tincture.

Starulf Haraldsson.

Conflicts with Bothor-Argent, an escarbuncle sable (Papworth, p. 684), if an escarbuncle pointed really is an escarbuncle. It may be a non-heraldic charge. Please start over.

Terric Bearsmountain.

A hide (cf. Laurel's letter of 22 October 1976) is an ordinary and has no "proper." Please resubmit with a natural bearskin proper.

Thescorre, Shire.

The laurel wreath is too small to be seen. Please redesign.

Thescorre, Shire, Pursuivant's Office.

You can't put the Herald's crossed trumpets on a badge-though you can have the crossed trumpets, plus the given Herald's title, made up on a medallion to be worn by the Herald-and there should not be badges for the lower offices. Don't resubmit this. Your fee will be refunded.

Thora Haakonsdagger.

Conflicts with St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Vert, a money bag or. (Did you possibly mean to say Haakonsdatter? If so, please let us know when you resubmit.)

Thorbjorn Thorsson.

Between the patronymic and the charge, no way. We are all mortals here and none of us can claim to have a god for a father unless she can prove it, and we take a lot of convincing. In addition, the device is close to Bearengaer Hinn Raudi-Gules, a hammer bendwise argent and Hundiel-Gules, a stonehammer in bend sinister proper.

Thylacine of the Frosty Mists.

The name "thylacine" for the Tasmanian or marsupial wolf is first attested in 1827 (Oxford English Dictionary). We suggest you call it a Pocketwolf, and find a new personal name for yourself. The device and badge are acceptable. We do not believe that there are any marsupials at all in the Ordinary.

Umbar of the Tamcheks.

Umbar is a placename (the home of the pirates in THE LORD OF THE RINGS). The second name is reminiscent of the Tumcheks of Gor, who are not only fictional but offensive. Please take another name.

Vissevald Selkirkson.

Conflicts with Bisset, Argent, a bend sinister gules (Papworth p. 183).

Windmasters' Hill, Calligraphers' and Illuminators' Guild.

The Boreas in the emblazon is in trian aspect, which is late and not used in Society heraldry. It must be either full face or in profile; please decide and let us know. (Other than that, it's lovely.)

Wladyslaw Poleski.

Poland has Gules, an eagle displayed argent. You have your ethnicity straight, but you must alter your device. We suggest you exchange vert and gules.

THE KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Biserko Broznik.

The name is rejected as being modern slang. If you wish to resubmit, document it as a name, rather than an adjective, and in period. The device will pass.

Chepe Noyotai.

This is a standard jewelry design used in the Meredies area, and therefore inadmissible.

Seraq.

Please add a surname. We suggest that you fimbriate the heater and sword gules.

Starhaven, Shire.

Even calling it "proper" you can't put green on blue and black; IT VANISHES FROM SIGHT, which is what the laws of tincture are all about. How about wreath or?

Wyvernwoode, Barony of, Flag.

Emmanche is not English heraldry (cf. Parker); the alternative blazon, Two letters W, is also unacceptable because flags follow the rules for arms, not badges, so no letters are allowed. Try to find something else suitable to put in your canton. Try not to infringe on the United States of America everybody does that.

KINGDOM OF THE MIDDLE

AElfhaelen Dracasidth.

Your surname means "dragon's traveling companion." This is a little too much to accept from a human being. Please modify it a bit. Your device cannot have a colored bordure on a colored field; we suggest a bordure argent.

Alfred the Large.

We suggest you take an additional surname; the difference between "the Great" and "the Large" is very thin ice for you to skate on. The device conflicts with Horsburgh of That Ilk-Azure, a horses head couped argent (Papworth, p. 911).

Alixe Pfau von Herscheld.

A lozenge as part of a device is like a shield as part of a device; it is an inescutcheon, looking like someone else's arms grafted onto yours: in this case, the counterchange of Hays-Or, a sun gules (Papworth, p. 1100). It looks like an inescutcheon of pretense. Please resubmit your device without the lozenge. You might have a sun gules in chief, for instance.

Allemandus Draconis.

Conflicts with Aldewinkle, Argent, a cross pattee gules, and others (Papworth, p. 605). Suggest adding a chief gules; currently there is only one point of difference.

Allisand of Seren Glyn.

Conflicts with Paul of Sunriver, Azure, a compass star of 8 or, and with Hutison, Azure, a 16-pointed estoile or (Papworth p. 695); also possibly William of Gallo, Finnvarr de Taahe, Rodema of Rohan.

Andrea of Owl's Roost.

Too close to Lars Vilhjalmsson-Per pale sable and vert, a snowy owl affrontee proper perched on a sword fesswise reversed.

Anne of Winterskye.

Conflicts with Minshull-Azure, a chevron between three crescentsd out of each an estoile issuing argent (Papworth, p. 408).

Aristide du Landolet.

Too close to Jean de la Grand' Anse, Azure, a dolphin embowed argent above the sun in splendor; and to Fitz-James of Lewiston, Azure, a dolphin naiant embowed argent. Because a chief as the only difference implies a family connection, your arms are not sufficiently different from these and others.

Arwyn Antarae.

Generally, these arms are too crowded; medieval heraldry is simple and easily recognizable. We also wonder how a single charge can be in pale. And what is a mulleter? Please reduce the number of charges and resubmit.

Asleik Skallagrimsson.

Your device will pass, except that you must specify in the blazon, and show in the emblazon, what kind of grain is in the garb. The grain heads should be visible. However, Skallagrim, Bald-Grim, was a real person and what sons he had are known. Take another surname or patronymic and resubmit.

Atackq'vix: Scasthjolaen Lankhmarna.

Heralds from many different kingdoms have agreed that what you have here is not heraldry at all. And "per quarter" makes no sense; please use more conventional terminology when you resubmit. What language are you using for your name?

Azar Samoht Notsnhoj.

The device conflicts with Ashton-Sable, a saltire or (Papworth p. 1060) and with the counterchange of Sylvanus Andere. And do you REALLY want to have the College of Arms process you into its mechanical record-keeper with your mundane name spelled backwards? Please resubmit.

Beald Mod.

Conflicts with De Penshort, Sable a mullet or.

Caelwulf Longstrider.

Your blazon does not adequately describe your emblazon. Please consult "Sea Stag" on page 149 of Woodward's ART OF HERALDRY.

Caer Anterth, Shire.

There is no mount proper. If it is a mount vert, then it becomes color on color. You could try a mount argent or or, thereon a laurel wreath vert.

Catriona Fionnaghal. Badge.

"Nic" means "daughter of." If "Elphinstone" is supposed to be a placename, it's used inappropriately, and if it's supposed to be a personal name, it's much too reminiscent of an epithet of Aragorn. A badge should be a simpler thing than what you have designed, which is a beautiful fantasy book cover in a modern art style. Simplify greatly and resubmit, and remember that a badge should be displayed on a roundel, not a lozenge.

Cein Throm-McAdam. Badge for House Delara.

Too close to the chaplet of roses which represents the Queen of most of the Kingdoms of the Society. What you have is not a torse but an annulet corded gules and or. We recommend another flower.

Christofre Cynwyd.

This fan-shaped leaf might possibly be a Washingtonia. The date-palm had a feather-like leaf. Which do you want? Either will pass.

Cirina Koenig.

Please document the use of "koenig" meaning "king" as a surname for non-royalty during our period. Please clarify if you want a heraldic or natural dolphin; the heraldic dolphin is a prickly beast looking rather like a rock cod with delusions of grandeur. What you have on your emblazon looks like an Tursiops truncatus voided. Please let us know.

Corwyn Dragonstar.

Conflicts with Swiney-Sable, an orle of eight mullets or (Papworth p. 998).

Daemon de Folo.

A death's head is by default argent. If you are trying for the natural yellowish ivory of minimally weathered bone, this is too close to your field or. A skull argent would have to be fimbriated. But in fact you have drawn them with the same medium grey of the pall and the helms, both blazoned sable. You could simply call them death's heads sable. Please specify the type of helm.

Dagan du Darregone. Badge.

Conflicts with Beryl of the Valley of the Moon-Vert, on a bend argent a winged lion rampant in sinister sable fimbriated argent; and Bouldin-Vert, on a bend argent a winged lion rampant wings erect argent fimbriated sable (Papworth pp, 82-83).

Diana Rhianon Moonraven.

The swan is connected with the Welsh goddess Rhiannon, which make the device iffy. It is also close to the State of West Australia: Argent, on a point wavy azure charged with a barrulet wavy argent a black swan naiant proper. Of more immediate concern in the Society, the orle of roses is suggestive of the Order of the Rose. Unless you are a Countess, you cannot have a wreath of roses.

Dorian Moonraven.

The full moon is always shown with a face, and is sometimes called "The moon in her plenitude." A crescent moon must be blazoned as an increscent or decrescent depending on its phase, and does not show a face. A silver roundel without a face is simply a plate. Your raven as shown is volant. Your overall charge need not be fimbriated. Please reblazon to indicate what you want (plate versus full moon, etc), and modify your name to avoid conflict with Michael Moorcock's character Dorian Hawkmoon.

Duntusque Minam von Cameroon.

Your device, apparently representing the Triumph of the Church Militant over War and Evil (is that what you intended?) suffers from a busy emblazon and a confusing blazon. Please start over.

Dzhan the Sarmatian.

The device conflicts with Morris of Carnarvon, Sable, a stag at gaze or (Papworth p. 59) and with Chorley, Sable, a stag lodged or (Papworth p. 69), but more to the point, we all recognize that beautiful piece of jewelry; there are people making a living out of selling reproductions of it; in some senses it is copyright and in others it is in the public domain and you cannot register it.

Ealasaid MacGhillielaidir.

Knotwork is not, by and large, heraldic. A few simple knots have made it into mundane heraldry (e.g., Bowen knot) or into Society heraldry by definition and the circulation of drawings (e.g., Donnelly knot), but your elaborate interlace cannot be described or defined. Please start over without the interlace.

Eleanor MacGowan.

This possibly conflicts with Bloma, Azure, a white horse courant proper (Rietstaap). If you resubmit it, please document the Lippizzaner horse, which is probably not in period.

Elwyn firiel Galabereth.

Conflicts with Pont-Argent, three rainbows proper between in chief two stars gules and in base a galley sable (Papworth, p. 1043) or the counterchange of Consuelo Torres de Plata-Argent, a castle triple towered sable, overall a harpie displayed or displayed or both. "Firiel" is a proper name, not a particle.

Enid Aurelia of the Tin Isles.

Conflicts with Swan-Azure, a swan proper (Papworth, p. 306) and with Sheryl Thespis-Azure, a swan naiant argent crowned or.

Evar Aethalwald.

Conflicts with Pawlett-Azure (error for sable) 3 swords conjoined in point argent hilted or (Papworth, p. 1109).

Far Reaches, Shire.

What you have isn't a heraldic comet. One may be seen in Parker's GLOSSARY OF THE TERMS USED IN HERALDRY.

Frank the Illiterate Scribe. Badge.

Conflicts with Delaray, Argent, the sun in splendor gules (Papworth p.1080).

Fogge of Owlshaunt.

An owl is statant guardant by default. Your device appears to conflict with the counterchange of James MacChlurain-Sable, an owl argent; and with Parry of Laimak (FABULOUS HERALDRY) but we are not sure because your blazon and Your emblazon disagree. Please decide what you want, making sure to avoid conflicts, and resubmit.

Gaping Wound, Order.

The Convocation of Heralds agreed unanimously to reject this device on grounds of offensiveness. Try a single gout de sang, rather than a fountain of blood.

Geoffri of Warreine.

Too close to Laszlo Oroszlanveri and counterchange of Robert of Westmarch-Sable, a lion rampant vert, fimbriated argent.

Gillian du Bois des Fleurs.

Conflicts with Wymake, Argent, 3 gillyflowers gules (Papworth, p. 861).

Girolamo Veneziano di Napoli.

This is too complicated; please simplify and resubmit. And while you are at it, the anvil you show on your emblazon is too modern. We recommend Jost Amman's BOOK OF TRADES (available from Dover Paperbacks), p. 80. Generally speaking, any piece of technology you cannot find in Amman is probably out of period!

Grey of West Shore.

This conflicts with Magistrate of Technic (Argent, a hurt) and Eldham (Azure, a plate) (Papworth p. 1046). Also, please take a first name; "Grey" is a famous noble house of England.

Grimdore Hawkesbane.

"Vanquished" is not heraldic. The term "North Wind Raging" is not heraldic either, and while we do have an occasional Boreas in heraldry, what you have on your emblazon is not that and we don't know what it is. If you have a source for it, please send it along.

Gwenllian of the Middle Marches.

See comment above under Ealasaid MacGhillielaidir. Heraldry cannot describe or define any but the very simplest of knots.

Hugo von Feuerklippe.

Conflicts with the Beacon Principal Herald of Meridies, A beacon inflamed and with St. Dorothy, Gules, a beacon or inflamed, and with others.

Imreal Goldenleaf.

What is a fire leaf? Assuming it is some kind of leaf, it conflicts with Bendlise-Or, a rose leaf in bend sinister vert, Papworth p. 960.

Ivivis of Cornwall.

Infringes Province of the Sun, Atenveldt-Argent, within a laurel wreath azure a fire ball proper. For your information, the name Ivivis is not Cornish but Nehwonese.

Izora of the Silver Rose.

Too close to Order of the Silver Rose, An Tir-A rose argent slipped and leaved proper; and to Chandrabala-Vert, a kris reversed above a crescent argent.

Johnnae of the Hawks Flying.

We believe we have rejected this device before. The thistle is still emblazoned incorrectly-the upper petals are indeed purple, but the calyx is GREEN-also, flaunches come in pairs of the same color; we should have caught this before.

Jon St. Vincent d'Outremer.

Too close to Beverly Hodghead, Azure, a cross argent, overall an anchor and an arrow in saltire or; also to Aylesbury, etc., Azure, a cross argent. Also the emblazon shows the cross too narrow; redraw it or call it some diminutive of a cross.

Kalkin of Doombridge.

That does look like the Brig o' Doom, all right, but we question its suitability for a heraldic device. And Kalkin is too close to Kalki, the Silver Stallion in J. B. Cabell and in mythology before that, who is one of the ten avatars of some god or other and will come on doomsday. Finally, the cat sable on gules is color on color. And there is no "proper" for a tower. We admire your scholarship but we think you will have to start over.

Kentaurus, Barony of.

The name is too close to the already approved Province of Ceantyre: but perhaps the question is moot since the Aten Herald informs us that the Barony doesn't exist.

Layla of Shadowwoods.

Conflicts with Arelia de la Chevaux de Mer-Sable, a winged seahorse argent, winged, tailed and unglued or. Rampant is the default position for a seahorse.

Mary the Mild.

The name is too reminiscent of the Virgin Mary, a personage about whom some people get terribly emotional. When you resubmit, please work with your local herald to make the emblazon and blazon correspond more closely: as it is we are not dead certain what you want.

Nigel FitzMaurice de Caeranor.

Conflicts with Thorne, Argent, three crescents azure (Papworth p. 598) and with the Kingdom of Caid, Azure, a coronet or within a laurel wreath or between 3 crescents argent, within a bordure embattled argent.

Nubbin Keshran.

The bordure is a mark of Scottish cadency, and without it, this is too close to the Masters of Defense (Fox-Davies, BOOK OF PUBLIC ARMS, Edinburgh, 1915, p. 228).

Orson die Grosse Mauer.

Conflicts with Osney, Sable, a fess embattled argent (Papworth p. 709) and others.

Qu'marin (or Coumarin) of Rivenstar.

Your first choice of name signifies a perfume ingredient (the scent of new-mown hay, as we are told). Your second choice confuses us. Please give of a good account of where the name comes from.

Randall Alartinual.

There are numerous versions of the Cross of Jerusalem. This is not any of them. Crosslets do not touch the cross potent. Blazon "a cross potent between four crosslets" or whichever other you want.

Ranulf Wulfshaven.

Conflicts with Follye, Sable, a cross moline argent (Papworth p. 620).

Joserlin Cigfran Middrael. Badge for House Ravenswood.

Conflicts with Erryk Blackwolf, badge, Per bend sinister sable and gules, a plate.

Robert Burgess Preston.

This is a direct conflict with Freyer of Grunau (Rietstaap).

Robert of Two Cliffs.

Conflicts with Sampson, Or, a cross moline sable (Papworth p. 616).

Rory O'Tomrair.

The hand of Ulster is the mark of a British baronet. While in the Society we do not have baronets, let alone marks of them, outsiders would be mightily confused. Lord Virgule points out that the Hand of Ulster is one of the few heraldic charges that a mundane layman might recognize.

Sean MacLaeghair.

Conflicts with Deighton, Argent, a lion passant between three crosses pattee gules (Papworth p. 125).

Serret of Falling Stars.

See above under Grimdore Hawkesbane; that interesting quasi-Aztec personage on the emblazon is not a Boreas or any other representation of the North Wind we have seen. Please send documentation if you have some.

Tagge Narwhalson.

A father's human-type name, not epithet, goes in the patronymic; thus if your father were known as Hrolf Narwhal, you would be Tagge Hrolfsson. You could be Tagge Hrolfsson Narwhal. . . . Meanwhile, the narwhals in the emblazon are in trian aspect, which we don't use. "Naiant" implies full side-view. Have the artist turn them a bit and resubmit.

Thor's Anvil, March.

See comments above under Girolamo Veneziano di Napoli, and look in Amman for an anvil that is period.

Torin of Arcana.

Your place of origin cannot be a deck of cards.

Vladimir Bogdan.

Conflicts with Beveley, Azure a chevron between three leopards or (Papworth, p. 387).

Wayward, House.

We have, somewhat nervously, convinced ourselves that this does not conflict with the standard Civil Defense sign (BOMB SHELTER THIS WAY), but we cannot register it until we have the name of an individual, by default that of the head of household, to register it to. Please advise.

FOR THE KINGDOM OF THE WEST

Alana Balisette.

A balisette is a musical instrument in Frank Herbert's DUNE, which make it out of period by at least several millennia. Try "Alana of the Lute" or some equivalent. The device is all right.

Alan o' Dracocrag.

Conflicts with Skene of Aberdeen, Gules, three skenes palewise in fess argent, hilted etc., surmounted of as many wolf's heads (of the third) (Papworth, p. 933), and Skein of Newtile, Per chevron argent and gules, three skenes surmounted by as many wolf's heads counterchanged.

Alaric of Hraefncraf. Device and badge.

The shape described as an "axe-head" cannot be an axe-head; it would be impossible to put a haft on it. Please do some research and fine a real axe-head of some pre-industrial culture.

Alfric Favnesbane,

The name Favnesbane is too close to Fafnisbane, which can only be an epithet of Sigurd the Volsung. Manticores have no wings. If you want a manticore, you may have one. If you want a winged manticore, we can enter a new category of monster. But please let us know.

Anthony Shadowtrapper.

The blazon as given is wrong. We are trying to device a way of blazoning it properly; it represents the mechanical iris of a camera obscura looking at a sword.

Ammaerlin Chardonnay du Montrose. Name change from Guy of the Silver Horses.

We suggest "De Chardonnay et Montrose" as better French, and would like to have a source for "Ammaerln".

Angelita de Equus.

We have no objection to the device, but you must make the name grammatical. Proper Latin would be Angelita, or Angelula, de Equo. Spannish would be Angelita del Caballo. Please let us know.

Aubrey von Stuffle.

This isn't a cross formy and we're not sure what it is. Please resubmit with a recognized cross.

Black Taylor of Lochaber.

You need a given name, such as your mother might have given you in your cradle. So far you have an epithet, a surname, and a place name.

Brian Stewart.

Conflicts with Robert of Avon, Checky azure and or, on a chief sable a griffin counter-statant argent.

Caer Lyon, Shire.

The device is acceptable; the name is not. We have the vague understanding you have found, or are finding, another name for the shire; please let us know.

Catalin.

Your submission form tells us that Catalin was supposed to have been a Celtic wizard. We had never heard of him, but we'll take your word for it that he was a wizard, which makes the name unacceptable. Please take another name and resubmit.

Christopher of Deauville.

Please supply documentation for the things you call "Fu dogs", which do not resemble any Fu dogs familiar to any of us. If you can document it, we can circulate a copy of your drawing.

Cirilo Zmajdrugada.

As described in your blazon and shown in your emblazon, your dragon is in an impossible position. The green dragon is shown against its black wings, which is color on color. This is not permitted, and for a very good reason: it is impossible to SEE the dragon against its wings. Please redesign the dragon just enough that it doesn't violate tincture and can be recognized for what it is. Consult your local herald for advice.

Crimson the Red.

Please find yourself a proper first name, such as your mother might have given you in your cradle. You could be, e.g., "John the Crimson" or "Olaf the Red" (not Erik, of course)

Dalriadise Gairloch.

Infringes on the Bishop of Chur, Argent, an ibex raised (leve en pied).

Daniel Shadygrove.

What you call gyronny voided isn't heraldry. We can't think of any other way of describing it, and suggest you drop the lines and have your very fine charge against a plain sable field.

Deborah the Dextrous.

Lord Vesper tells us the applicant no longer wants this device.

Diana av Fjell Tusenfryden.

Please document a crescent moon, with fact-as opposed to a stylized increscent or decrescent-if you can document it, we can pass it.

Diarmuid mor O'Flannigan.

Conflicts with Christian of Orange, Argent, on a mount vert an orange tree fructed proper; please revise.

Robert of the Isles. Badge for House Dundarach.

Without the arrow this is this badge of Scotland. Please start over.

Duncan Greencastle.

The star polygon is magical. You may use a star of nine points voided by not interlaced. You must then beware of conflicts with Aelfwynn Gyrthesdohtor.

Eden of Lionsguard. Resubmission.

The applicant has decided that she no longer wants this device.

Edward the Stuffy.

Conflicts with Duncan Greencastle.

Eriod of Eire.

The applicant has decided that she no longer wants this device. (However, her badge has been accepted; see under Acceptances.)

Eldarion Gravenic von Middleburg.

Eldarion was the son and heir of the King Elessar. You cannot bear that excessively famous name, even with modifiers, even if it is your mundane name.

Ellen Winterbourne.

Too close (the Conclave calculated one and two-tenths points) to Compagnie du Dindon d'Or and Starhelm Warlocke, Sable, on a mullet of seven points argent, an arrow point inverted gules.

Gerhard von Nordflammen.

See Parker's GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN HERALDRY under "Endorse" and "Cottice". These elements are a form of side-decoration; they should not be a main charge. And as for quilting them. . . !

Gruen der Spitzenkloppler.

Tatting shuttles are out of period. You could have a weaving shuttle; consult Jost Amman's BOOK OF TRADES for a suitable shape.

Gryphon Drakespirit.

The device is acceptable (rayonee of 12 is dependent on artistic license). The first name is acceptable, though we suggest it be spelled "Griffin". The second name is not acceptable. Please resubmit with another surname.

Genafara the Dragonmaker.

This charge represents a child's toy dragon made on in-period fabric. Please submit a new emblazon showing a toy dragon that looks like a dragon-even a newly hatched dragon, being a reptile, would be quadrupedal and lean, having the same proportions as an adult, not round-bellied and neotenous-and we will pass it.

Gwendwyn the Silent of the Silver Pegasus.

Conflicts with Janeltis Karaine, Stargazer: Azure, a winged unicorn volant to sinister argent, crined and unguled or, between five mullets of eight argent.

Harald de Sort Ulf of Danelaw. Badge.

Conflicts with various ranks of the Boy Scouts of America. A pity; it's a nice simple design such as a badge should be.

Hilary of Serendip. Badge.

Conflicts with the Barony of Bakhail.

Hrorek Halfdane of Faulconwood. Badge for Fairhaven.

Conflicts with Eaton, Or, a fret azure; Mandeville, Or, a fret azure, quartering gules two bars ermine, and others (Papworth 878).

Janeltis Karaine Stargazer. Name change from Janeltis Karaine Starfarer.

A seafarer travels seas; a starfarer travels stars. This implies abilities beyond those of mortals, at least in our period.

Jessica of the Old Forest.

Conflicts with Berston, Azure, three butterflies volant argent (Papworth p. 957); also Pentellicke, Sable, three butterflies argent.

John the Bofftist.

Conflicts with Arinbjorn Njallson-Perr bend azure and vert, a bendlet or, overall a sword fracted in two places argent, etc.

Kahali.

Take a surname, or provide documentation that your persona is from a culture not using them.

Kathryn Dhil Lorriel.

Too close to Canth of Threscore-Argent on a bend sable cotised gules between a fluer de lis sable, and a dragon passant or; and some cadet house of Maconnaut.

Kendrew McFlandry of Dundee.

Conflicts with Rolf the Relentless-Pean, a compass start fitchy or.

Keridwen of Caer-Myrddin.

The name conflicts with mythology and the work of Mary Stewart, and the device with Francesca, Azure, a dove displayed, head elevated argent.

Lachlan nicColin.

Conflicts with Raim-y-Hynndyll-Argent, on a pile inverted azure, a lyre argent.

Larissa Katrina of Winterhaven.

Conflicts with Sal (Rietstaap), Argent, a horse courant sable, bridled or.

Leah Sherwood of Nottingham.

Too close to Richard of Rawnsley, Azure, on a bend or three rowan trees palewise eradicated proper.

Llewellyn Lycandor.

The mullet will disappear against the ermine. Try making it a color.

Macsen Fidelis.

Please document the Fidelis knot. Also, there was only one Macsen, ne' Maximius, Roman general in Britain, briefly Roman emperor, killed by the Byzantines and transmogrified into a Welsh faolk hero. There were plenty of people named Maximius, and could be Maximius Fidelis without infringing. Please change the name when you document the Fidelis knot.

Maire ni Monivea.

Please document lunels. We don't have a copy of Neubacher/Brooke-Little; please send a photocopy of the relevant page.

Malcolm MacGregor.

Sufficient difference from Beverly Hodgehead, but conflicts with Gernet (Rietstaap).

Mariposa de los Montoya. Badge.

Conflicts with Gunnar Mulcha of Odin's Seat, Counter-ermine, a butterfly or.

Marli of Bethamber.

The rounder superimposed on the Mogen David isn't acceptable heraldry, because it isn't recognizable at any kind of distance. It would be all right with the roundel outside the star.

Markus the Blue.

Conflicts with the counterchange of Balin of Tor.

Marshall Hwesta Sindarinwa of Eaglesbane.

The device will be perfectly acceptable, but the name is not. "Hwesta Sindarinwa" is a perfectly good letter but not a name. Give us the word and we will register the device to Marshall of Eaglesbane.

Matthew of Paisley.

Conflicts with Sarah MacColin-Purpure, a unicorn rampant contourne argent and in sinister chief a mullet or.

Michael Tryggvasen.

The drawing shows an ibex; the Rocky Mountain Goat has long white hair and straight 6-inch black hors, and is not a true goat. Ibex are generally brown/grey with black or white markings. Which do you want?

Mordred the Mercenary.

You can't be Mordred. There was only one of him and that was quite enough. The device appears to be all right.

Mulai ech Tachfin.

This is not an octofoil, and it's too small for the shield. It looks like a conflict with the Order of the Rose. Please redesign.

O'Guin Silverwolf.

O'Guin is a surname; you need a first name (the sort of thing that would have been given you in the cradle). Niall O'Guin Silverwolf, for example. The device conflicts with a whole page of Papworth; you need one-and-a-half points of difference. Consult your local herald.

Owain Apeceon. Badge.

Ruthven of Rockridge has a hippograph passant argent. Your field is different and your hippogriff is bendwise. Since this is a badge, you only need one point of difference; but it would be courteous to ask Fr. Ruthven if he has any objection.

Owain Apeceon. Badge for House of Wilhelm von Lichtehren: Too complex. A simple roundel vert would be acceptable.

Paul of Hameldone.

Conflicts with Vernon, etc., Argent, a fret sable (Papworth p. 878).

Perilous Visions, Shire.

The name is still unacceptable.

Ragnar the Rogue.

Conflicts with Yang the Nauseating-Sable, a snake coiled to strike voided or.

Raoul the Urbane.

The flutes should have their ends showing, rather than running off the ends of the shield like barrulets. Please redesign.

Richard of Gloucestre.

Richard? Of Gloucester? With a white boar? And a whole field full of roses? There already was one. . . .

Reynard Straubhaar de Leao.

A lion proper is tawny, and will not show up on a field or. There is no brown lion such as appears on the emblazon. The arm does not contrast very well either. We suggest a lion sable.

Richard of Seahaven.

Conflicts with Baron, Azure, on a bend sinister argent a sword sable.

Richard of Seahaven. Badge.

Badge rejected on the instruction of the applicant.

Robert of Wildwood.

This device is too complicated for our period of heraldry. Please simplify it to one or two charges.

Roberta of Rowan.

Conflicts with Kennedy of Vlowburn.

Rodrigo de Cerdana. Change of arms.

What you have is not embattled arondee. We're not sure what it is. You may have embattled arondee, but in order to have what you have drawn you must tell us what it is, with documentation.

Rowena Douglas of Falconhurst.

Conflicts with Canton of Cynydd (East Kingdom): Azure, on a pile inverted or a boar's head sable, etc.

Sharra ni Perran.

Conflicts with Dietz, etc., Azure, a griffin segreant or.

Siegfried von Rion.

What you have as a charge is not a condor nor any other flying thing that we can recognize. Please document it, or start over.

Skye of Stillwater.

Skye is a place name. Please take a personal name.

Tahse Wahnenhan.

Too close to New Mexico.

Tarnmist, Shire.

Strike the crescent from the blazon; if you mention it it conflicts with Caid, but it does not harm to include it on the emblazon. The laurel wreath is far too small: it must be obviously visible.

Three Mountains, Barony. Scots Guard.

The device is acceptable; the name infringes on the name of an actual military unit.

Thomas the Ambidextrous.

We do not use the very late division wavy-crested.

Torgul Bahadur.

The device is acceptable; but Bahadur is a hereditary title. Please take another surname and resubmit.

Tsukikage, Miyamoto.

Our resident Japanologist comments as follows: Nice try, honest! However, Miyamoto is a PERSONAL name ( e.g., Miyamoto Musashi). Also, Tsukikage is not a very likely female name. How about Musashi Tsuki (the first name being the area where Miyamoto-sensei came from, the second meaning "moon".) -Yamaguchi Yukio no kami

Tricia of Weatherford.

The roses drawn are modern tea-roses. The species given (Rosa foetida) is the Austrian briar, which is yellow, rather than bicolor. A drawing of it as it was within our period appears in Plate II-37 of EARLY FLORAL ENGRAVINGS, E. F. Bleiler, ed., Dover 1976.

Valkyrie Drommefjell. Formerly Faulkner.

You cannot have the personal name Valkyrie; it is the name of a whole class of minor Norse goddesses. We realize that it is your mundane name; we sympathize. Robert Ivanhoe and John Tremaine had the same problem. How about a suitable Nordic name like Brynhild or Schwertleite or Waltraute or some other name suitable to be used by either human or superhuman shieldmaidens?

West Kingdom, Lists, Office of.

As drawn, the swordblade is entirely on the scroll and will disappear. Please redesign and resubmit.

William of Hoghton. Badge for Hoghton Towers.

This is too busy for a badge (beezy, said several Heralds, and were immediately suppressed), not to mention the bee, or the semee of bees, was the badge of Napoleon Bonaparte.
