LETTER OF ACCEPTANCES AND REJECTIONS

ACCEPTANCES BY KINGDOM

Chirurgeon's Guild of the S.C.A.. Argent, on a Latin cross voided a goutte gules.

Note: This is the device for the East Kingdom First Aid Corps and has now been adopted as the society wide device for all medics in the SCA by the Chirirgeon General of the SCA, Lord Bohemund von Greifshafen. All medics should display this device, just as all heralds display the crossed trumpets. This will probably replace the fleam devices used in Meridies as well, but that is up to Lord Bohemund to decide

KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA

Angelina MacDougal. Azure, on a shamrock vert fimbriated a horse rampant and in chief a falcon displayed, head to sinister, Or.

Note: This means the pallet is encircled by the annulet.

Dosia of Glendalough. Azure, a pair of wings in lure argent conjoined by a shackle depending a chain couped and in chief a demi-sun eclipsed Or.

Enrich Armpittsbaine. Quarterly sable and gules, in bend sinister two Bowen knots sable, fimbriated Or.

Ketievia Segevia de la Noche. Badge. Sable, a peregrine falcon counter-stooping, belled and jessed, within a bordure argent.

Kristján Olavssen Ankestjerne. Purpure, on a sun of eight points elongated to base Or a raven displayed, wings spread in fess, head to sinister, purpure, within a bordure rayonny Or.

Note: A sun is just a mullet of alternating straight and wavy points, usually at least sixteen points. The number of points can be specified as a lesser number, though, as in this case.

Molly Bluespoon. Per chevron Or and gules, in pale a spoon fesswise azure and a sea-horse erect Or.

Nina van der Zilver. Quarterly purpure and argent, a fillet cross counterchanged between in bend sinister a pair of scissors chased and a heart, both palewise, purpure, all within a bordurelet counterchanged.

Shaleaya of the Whispering Pine. Azure, a scarpe between issuant from canton a demi-sun or and a pine tree proper, fimbriated Or.

Note: If she wants a blue spruce tree she will have to give the genus and species.

Tera Dragonstaff. Sable, a dragon passant between three compass stars one and two argent.

Verena von Farnberg. Erminois, a crab displayed tergiant bendwise gules maintaining in its chief claw a fern frond arched fesswise vert, on a chief sable an increscent and a sun Or.

KINGDOM OF CAID

Aliskye MacKyven Raizel. Argent, a rose sable, slipped and leaved proper, and on a chief nebuly azure three mullets of six points argent.

Note: Mc is out of period so I have changed it to Mac.

Daviel Reshechai. Gules, a pennanular brooch opening to the sinister, the pin bendwise sinister, within an orle of three strands plaited clockwise Or.

Eowyn Amberdrake. Badge. A long S surmounted by an uncialesque m.

Note: Monograms like this are quite period.

Marguerite de Villard. Argent, a Maltese cross between four fleurs-de-lys in saltire gules, overall a Nine-Man-Morris board saltirewise Or, marked sable.

Taliba bint 'Ihsen. Argent, a horse's head affronté couped at the neck azure, blazed of a crescent argent, between three roses sable.

Note: There is no way of distinguishing the breed of a blue horse's head.

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Alain FitzWilliam l'Ailélion. Badge. Per pale Or and gules, a winged lion statant argent.

Annalynne Starchild Haraldsdottir. (Badge for Hüs Løk) A sprouting yellow onion bendwise proper. (Liliacae Alium cepa)

Annalynne Starchild Haraldsdottir. Badge. A rotweiler dog sejant affronté proper, gorged of a collar Or.

Note: The dog's body is in trian aspect. Turn it completely forward.

Boadicea Artemisia. Argent, a Greek lyre sable.

Note: As Boadicia was Queen of Britain and Artemisia means devoted to the Greek goddess Artemis, which Boadicia could hardly have been, this is sufficiently different.

Cedric fils de Guillaume. Argent, on a pale sable between a drawstring bag azure and a Latin cross gules a sword argent.

Domenica Farnese. Gyronny vert and azure, a mullet of six points within eight mullets of six points in mascle argent.

Note: Appeal granted. From now on, surnames of royal households may not be used, but those of noble households without claim to thrones may be used. Thus although Farnese is the Ducal House of Parma, it is not a Royal House, having no claim to the throne. In using a name of a noble house one must be careful to avoid using any of the given names used by known members of that house. One still cannot be a Hapsburg or a Tudor, but Devereaux is acceptable so long as you aren't also a Robert. These houses are generally large, and contain a number of non-noble members. Royal Houses contain only noble members in that everyone has some claim to the throne.

Eagle, Shire of the. Vert, an eagle rising, wings elevated and addorsed, within a laurel wreath between in pale two caltrops, all Or.

Edmund the Sentinel. Argent, a balance sable bearing on the dexter enhanced pan a hand couped sable holding a morning-star proper and on the sinister lowered pan a heart gules.

Elspeth Jean of Lochmaree. Per fess Or and azure, issuant from the line of division five piles wavy inverted gules, in base a hawk stooping, wings displayed, argent.

Francois duVent. Azure, a cross patty throughout argent between in bend two fleur-de-lys palewise, Or, entwined about the lower arm of the cross a snake, its head issuant over the sinister chief corner of the cross, erminois.

Note: I am told that duVent is the correct French form, and have used it. If he can document that Duvent is also correct he can have it.

Glynna of Galashiels. Argent, a thistle purpure, slipped and leaved vert, in base two chevronels braced sable, within a bordure compony sable and argent.

Hammerhold, Barony of. Badge for the Order of the Beaten Ass. Argent, an ass counter-passant azure.

John of Ean Airghead. Badge for Ean Airghead. Vert, a chimney swift migrant palewise holding in its beak a holly leaf fesswise argent.

Melucine de Ronceverte. Vert, on a pale argent a greenbriar slip vert.

Osprey, Shire of the. Azure, an osprey stooping within a laurel wreath argent.

Rodereick Level-lance of Rampart. Or, a lion rampant between on a pair of flaunches azure two crosses paty fitchy Or.

Saavegg Haraldssøn. Per chevron argent and gules, in chief a compass star above a bear passant sable.

William Ironwood. Azure, in pale three frogs salient fesswise ermine impaled by an arrow inverted Or, imbrued at the tip gules.

William Ironwood. Badge. Azure, a frog sejant ermine, overall a dagger Or, imbrued at the tip gules.

Note: I have omitted the words "called Shadowhand". The College of Arms is only interested in registered the formal Society name of a person. We ar not interested in nicknames and do not register them. To do so would be to give official approval for the use of a nickname, which is a separate name in itself. William is called Shadowhand, which means that he is addressed at times as "Shadowhand". This is not an acceptable name as it is only one word and is not a given name. A person may have many nicknames, but these do not belong in the formal name unless they are to become a fixed part of the name itself. One's formal Society name is a complete unit. This is what will be used for scrolls and other official uses. One's nickname is what can be used by aquaintances in informal usage. Therefore the forms "called X" or "known as X" may not appear in a name submitted to the College. It is nice to have them in the file, which is why there is a line for them in the form, but they are not a part of the formal name.

REJECTIONS BY KINGDOM

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Aldanar Halrim. Badge. Quarterly vert and sable, a crescent argent.

This conflicts with Sean Macarailt of Sandyhume: Sable, an increscent argent. There is one point of difference for the field. Rotation is not a point of difference. I suggest adding a bordure.

Gabrielle Lucie de Noves. Vert, a fess wavy between two cranes in their vigilance argent.

This conflicts with Scheldewaert: Vert, a fess wavy argent. (Rietstapp) Adding a number of identical charges counts as only one point.

Heinrich der Jäger. Gules, a winged unicorn rampant Or.

This conflicts with Ybser: Gules, a winged unicorn rampant argent. (Rietstaap) The unicorn should have a board and cloven hooves and the heraldic lion's tail.

Jerilyn of Vert Silva. Argent, a cross paty sable, on a chief triangular vert a unicorn's hare inverted argent.

This conflicts with Dorothea of Caer Myrddin: Argent, a cross formy sable. Formy and paty are the same thing.

Katya Leonova v Cherkassy. Vert, a lion sejant erect Or, his sinister forepaw resting on a cartouche ermine charged with a bend sable.

This conflicts with Buech: Vert, a lion sejant erect Or. It also appears to be a form of marshalling of the arms of Attemere: Ermine, a bend sable. The College does not allow any form of charged shield on the field as a charge. This includes inescutcheons, lozenges, and cartouches. These count as inescutcheons of pretence. Note that even the cartouche is only one point from Buech. You may have a cartouche ermine, as it is a single tincture, even though one could say that that was Brittany, but we do not protect mundane arms consisting only of fields. Here the use of a cartouche instead of an inescutcheon would be sufficient to avoid complaint of pretence, which an actual inescutcheon ermine would raise. You still need an extra half point of difference.

Piasa Butee Nitidus. Sable, four sprigs in cross vert, fimbriated Or.

You cannot use a Linnean name as part of a Society name. They are all out of period. You could be Piasa Greyhawk. The device is legal, but would be much better as either Or with green sprigs or sable with Or sprigs, so you wouldn't have to fimbriate.

Terrell of Avalon. Gules, a key palewise between in fess two hearts argent.

This conflicts with Ponnel-Claverie: Gules, a key palewise argent. (Rietstaap) Avalon was not a mortal land. In fact the only mortal know to go there is King Arthur. In order for a place to be allowable as a place name in a society name it must be a place primarily inhabited by ordinary humans. Terrell is out of period, but as it is in fact your name you are allowed to use it by special exception clause. May I point out that it is generally thought of as a man's name, although it is obviously used by both sexes. If you like Glastonbury, why not be of Glastonbury? That's ok.

Wolfangus MaicMairghdhia. Badge for Clan Most. Argent, a Norse one-legged serpent vert entwined about a question mark azure.

The question mark is out of period. What was used in our period is a wavy hyphen over a period. Why not use a blue sickle, which looks a lot like a question mark?

KINGDOM OF CAID

Amadea da Dragonessa Strada. Argent, semé of roses gules, slipped and leaved, barbed and seeded proper, a heart sable.

This conflicts with Van Roden: Argent, a heart sable. The name is incorrect. The proper Italian form is Amadea de Strada Dragonessa. The adjective follows the noun.

Claryce Lastlove of Castle Rising. Sable, on a flame proper a dolphin hauriant argent.

This conflicts with William of Sark: Sable, a flame proper.

Eowyn Amberdrake. Badge. Azure, a dragon counter-sejant erect or and an enfield rampant proper.

The enfield has been previously rejected as out of period.

Harsha Aditya the Infidel. Sable, two staves in saltire between four bezants, all within an orle Or.

The device is OK, but there is a problem with the name. "In the Vedic literature are the seven gods of the heavenly light, at whose head stands Varuna, who is Aditya par excellence." Harsha was the name of an Indian monarch in the 7th century who was of course an Infidel, Mohammed having not been born yet. This is too much of a conflict with Harsha.

Owain ap Caradawc.

The appeal on the use of the place name "of Caer Pedryvan" is turned down. The rule of the College is that a place name must be a place primarily inhabited by ordinary mortals, not a place where occassionally a mortal was invited to visit. I point out that Dante visited Hades and Arthur dwells on Avalon, and yet neither is acceptable. Caer Peddryvan is a famous Castle of the Otherworld, and so is not acceptable as a place name in the SCA. To claim to come from such a place would be to imply either that you were non-mortal, or that you were a hero, since in Celtic mythology anyone coming from such a place would be treated as an extra-ordinary person worthy of great respect. This is too presumptuous. Please take the name of a real place.

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Abaris of Iargalon. Sable, four cramp-irons crossed in saltire and in cross gules, fimbriated and overall a scorpion counter-passant Or.

The device is ok except that the cramp-iron have all had their points cut off. They will make very poor boarding hooks that way. Iargalon was a magical land like Avalon. It is not a land primarily inhabited by ordinary mortals and thus it cannot be used as a place name in a Society name.

Akim Yareslavich. Sable, a serpent erect, guardant, embowed in quatrefoil, tergeant argent.

This conflicts with Dane: Sable, a serpent entwined and erect argent. There is only the one point of difference of position. Your position is not in quatrefoil and is essentially non-blazonable and is not heraldry in a period style. An example of embowed in quatrefoil is given below. You could make the snake into a Bowen knot. MISSING ART WORK HERE

Dafydd Seren yr Daraig. Quarterly sable and Or, in dexter chief a compass star and in sinister base a dragon volant erect, wings addorsed, gules.

The proper form for your name is Dafyyd Seren y Ddraig. The word for dragon mutates in the feminine singular form. The dragon is not in a standard heraldic position. It must be put in one, either rampant or salient or sejant erect or passant. I would suggest Quarterly sable and Or, a dragon bendwise passant, wings elevated and addorsed gules and in canton a compass star of sixteen points Or. Notice that for the dragon to avoid violating the rule of tincture it must be centered on the shield.

Devona de Elva v Groves. Per bend embattled sable and vert, in sinister chief a crescent bendwise Or.

The name does not appear to be translated correctly. We do not recognize v as a saxon word at all. Please document the name as to correct usage and meaning. The device is ok.

Enawynne of Olwen. Azure, a sword proper, overall a bearded horse's head couped argent, gorged of a collar Or.

The effect here is of a unicorn's head which makes it close to Master Frederick of Holland. This conflicts with John Elynn: Azure, on the blade of a dagger proper a candle sable. It is hard to tell the difference between a dagger and a sword. I suggest changing the field.

Fionn Ui Foghlaidh. Vert, on a pile embattled argent a pheon sable.

This conflicts with Curtis of Run: Vert, a pile argent, overall a crab inverted counterchanged. And it conflicts with Nicholas of the Hill Folk: Vert, on a pile argent a dragon rampant gules. A line of division difference is only half a point of difference.

Glaedenfeld, Shire of. Vert, semé of iris' Or, on a bend sinister wavy azure in sinister chief a laurel wreath palewise argent.

This is color on color, namely azure on vert. A semé does not make the field a neutral field. A semé is a charge. I suggest a wide argent fimbriation of the bend sinister, representing the banks of a river.

James of Prestwick. Gules, a tower argent, entwined by a green boomslang snake proper. (Dispholidus typu)

This conflicts with Allache: Gules, a tower argent.

Laurel Rocheriel. Gules, a demi-pegasus salient affrontée, wings displayed and inverted, Or, leaping through a snake biting it's tail in annulo, head to sinister chief, sable.

This is color on color, namely the sable snake on the gules background. There is no way that the blazon can indicate that the snake is mostly against the Or wings. This is not period style heraldry. I suggest you eliminate the snake and enclose the demi-pegasus within an annulet Or, with the wings entirely within the annulet. Notice that the pegasus is headed for a collision with the snake as the wings will not fit through. As a horse trainer I assume you want to indicate that the jump is successful.

Morgana d'Averna. Azure, a blasted Japanese Persinmon tree eradicated fructed (Diospyros kalki) between in fess two torches enflamed, all within a bordurelet dovetailed Or.

This is too close to Morgana Le Fey, also known as Morgana of the Lake. d'Averna means of the lake Avernus, a lake in Hell. Choose a different surname to more adequately difference from Morgana Le Fey.

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Robert Hightower. Sable, a bend sinister argent, overall a tower checky vert and argent.

This conflicts with Earl Kevin Perigrynne: Sable, on a bend sinister argent a perigrynne falcon stoooping azure. You must still get permission from Randall of Hightower to use his household name.

Sakura Kimineko. Vert, the dexter half of a sun eclipsed conjoined with a lion's head erased at the shoulder Or.

This conflicts with Patrick of Innisfree: Vert on a sun Or a dexter hand couped apaumy vert. I suggest you change the field.
