To: The Members of the College of Arms

From: Wilhelm von Schlu:ssel, Laurel King of Arms, O.L., O.P., O.L.M., Q.O.G.

Greetings:

Enclosed is the November Letter of Acceptances and Rejections. This brings the backlog up through the middle of September. Next month's meeting will be on Sunday, December 21, at which time I will process submissions from the middle of September to the middle of October, including the batch I listed last month.

There are several changes in the College. Master Baldwin of Erebor has been forced by mundane events to resign as Aten Principal Herald. His successor is Rhonwen y Llysieuydd (Julia Howarth, 3240 South 600 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84106, 801/485-9039). Her successor as White Stag Herald for the Principality of the Outlands is Anton Højen (Alan Peterson, 801 Oquirrh, Toole, UT 84074). Master Baldwin has agreed to join my staff as an advisor, and so he shall remain on the College of Arms mailing list. We will have to work out a title (I am currently favoring Green Staff Herald). There is a new Brigantia Principal Herald for the East, Steven of Silverwing (Steven Mesnick, 299 Sellsway East, Melden, MA 02148, 617/324-0234).

It is the feeling of the College that the length limit on names shall not be changed at this time by allowing abbreviations of names, or by allowing initials. Master Renfield informs me that his current program actually has a limit of 48 characters for names. This includes spaces, apostrophes, and hyphens.

For your convenience and review I present a table of the SCA titles and their translations into several languages used by SCA members. If anyone fluent in one of these languages spots an error, let me know. I particularly need the rest of the translations in Greek. Once I have finished this properly, I will put it into T.I. For the compleatists out there, in Estonian "King" = "Kuningas"; "Queen" = "Kuninganna"; "Earl" = "Krahv"; "Master" = "Meister"; "Mistress" = "Naismeister"; "Knight" = "Rüütel"; "Master of Arms" = "Meisterrelvandlane"; "Lord" = "Lord"; "Lady" = "Leedi". Anybody know the rest?

For the convenience of my staff, everyone should please date their letters in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. And please refer to other letters by giving their dates as well. This will make things much easier.

I find that I lack sufficient feedback in how you all are doing within your own kingdoms. I remember that I, as Vesper Principal Herald, often had trouble getting feedback from others on how I was doing. To remedy this, I am going to make a Principal Herald Evaluation Form. I will send copies of this letter to each member of your individual Kingdom Colleges of Heralds. They will fill out the forms and mail them back to me. I will, in turn, compile a summary of the results for each actual forms will be kept strictly confidential. I will try to do this periodically. Anybody have any suggestions for good questions? This is not intended to "get" anyone, but it is meant to be helpful. I will need up-to-date rosters for each kingdom by the time of the College meeting on December 21st. Remember that I also want an up-to-date copy of each kingdom's Order of Precedence.

Pray believe, my lords and my ladies, that I remain

Your Servant

Wilhelm von Schlüssel, Ol., &c.
