ACCEPTANCES BY KINGDOM

The Chronicler of the SCA. Per pale sable and argent, two quills conjoined in pile counterchanged, a chief gules.

Note: This is for use by all Chroniclers, just like the badges for the Heralds, Marshalls, Seneschals, etc. Exact usages will be set by the SCA Chronicler.

Note: Papillons are butterflies. A rising sun is the Japanese version used before World War II which has a roundel from which emerge diverging rays in all directions, as opposed to the standard heraldic sun, which has alternating straight and wavy points. The rising sun has in fact been used in European heraldry but was described in detail as having rays throughout. Rising sun is the shorter term. This is an SCA convention.

Note: This dragon is stretched out with its head to dexter and its tail to sinister instead of having them curled up in the center as is more usual.

Elvira the Invisible. Per chevron Or and vert, in chief three trefoils in fess and in base in saltire a viol surmounted by a bow, all counterchanged.

Evgeterína Andreyévna Karatyukóva. Vert, a scarpe between three chevronels braced and a horse counter-courant argent.

Note: Genus and species need not be given for common animals where there is only one species involved. There is only one species of domestic ate. The same is true of dogs and horses. There are, however, many breeds, and these are what must be specified.

Löwe des Berges. Sable, a bendlet between a lion rampant and three mountain peaks conjoined chased and snow-capped argent.

Patrick Stuart MacNab. Or, a chevron sable between a sword fesswise and a boar's head erased gules.

Rhonwen y Llysieuydd. Badge. Or, semé of cat's paw prints vert, a domestic cat counter-sejant licking its sinister forepaw sable, in base an inkhorn fesswise reversed, cap open, vert.

Mairi-Kathleen nic Lauren. Badge for House Athelas. Gules, three eucalyptus leaves crossed in estoile vert fimbriated between in fess two swords palewise argent.

Note: Crossed in estoile means the first is bendwise sinister, the second is bendwise and the third is palewise, placed one upon the other. This is a S.C.A. convention.

Basil Dragonstrike. Bendy Or and sable, a cross quarter-pierced counterchanged.

Note: This is a full sized cross taking up one third of the width and height.

Rosemary Petsley. Azure, on a pale argent between a mullet and a quill Or three sprigs of parsley vert.

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Aurore Nicole de Conte. Per fess indented floretty vert and azure, a stag at gaze Or and a rose argent.

Note: Floretty means there is a fleur-de-lys head emerging from each of the points of the indented line on the chief side. If they emerged from both sides it would be floretty counter-floretty.

Caitlin an Carrig. Lozengy argent and azure, a pall Or.

Note: This is the form of lozengy where the angles are right angles. We formerly called this checky per saltire but it is really only a variant of lozengy and a matter only for the artist. I therefore just call it lozengy.

Elizabeth Dameral Sage. Per pale azure and argent, in saltire a slip of borage (Borage officianalis) surmounting a sage blossom (Salvia officianalis) slipped and leaved proper.

Fíriel Lokrien MacGowan. Per bend sinister azure and argent, two longships counterchanged within a bordure sable.

Four Winds, Shire of the. Azure, issuant in cross from a mullet of four greater points and twelve lesser points Or four clouds argent, overall a laurel wreath Or.

Note: This would be even better if the heraldic four winds were used.

Gilrae of Moorburn. Azure, a fox-headed woman affronté statant, hands crossed at the waist, vested argent.

Gwendythe merch Edin Saepe of Rhamshed. Azure, a unicorn's horn bendwise throughout and in sinister chief a phoenix azure, flammant gules.

Note: The correct word for daughter of in Welsh is merch.

Kevin Alastair MacGowan. Badge for Clan MacGowan. Vert, an anvil argent.

Leliniel of Faelsia. Badge. Azure, a gothic letter L and in chief a compass star elongated to base argent.

Miles Rupert Stuart. Azure, on a chevronel gules fimbriated Or seven bezants and in base a chalice Or.

Note: Stuart is a very large clan in Scotland, and we have already allowed some people to use the name, so Stuart is a specific exception to the rule against using the surnames of royal families and clans.

Morgan y Crwydryn o Sainclêr. Azure, a sea-dragon erect within a saltire parted and fretty argent.

KINGDOM OF THE WEST

Adele de Bretagne. Per bend sinister gules and Or, in bend a needle bendwise sinister argent and a lute bendwise sinister proper.

REJECTIONS BY KINGDOM

KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA

Althea Gloria of Tyne. Argent, a Welsh pony courant sable, bridled argent, above five roses conjoined in fess gules.

Conflicts with Wendessen: Argent, a horse courant sable, bridled gules, on a mount vert. Secondary charges are only one point of difference.

Hunnar Torsk Balevare. Per bend azure and gules a bend Or, in sinister chief a seagull migrant bendwise sinister inverted argent.

Conflicts with Peter of Schwäbisch: Per bend azure and gules, a bend Or.

Offorino di Barbosa. Or, a pale sable, on a chief couped to dexter argent, a butterfly bendwise wings elevated and addorsed purpure, and on a base couped to sinister argent, a rabbit couchant to sinister sable.

This is not a period style of heraldry. It is too complex and therefore not acceptable.

Sean Michael MacIntyre. Sable, between a pair of flaunches a phoenix Or issuant from flames proper.

Conflicts with Prestwood: Sable, a lion rampant between two flaunches Or (Papworth, p. 843).

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Dexter MacBennett. Sable, a bend sinister Or between two death's heads argent.

Conflicts with the badge of Herman Otto Koehlermann: Sable, a bend sinister Or. Badges must differ from devices by 1 1/2 points. Adding several identical charges is one point of difference.

KINGDOM OF CAID

Hrorek Halfdane of Faulconwood. Badge. A mullet throughout voided within an annulet Or.

This conflicts with the badges of several Wiccan societies.

Melchor of Heorot. Argent, a rose azure, barbed and seeded proper, between a seadog gules and a bear sable combattant.

Melkor is the Middle Earth version of Satan. This name may not be used. Device is OK.

Myscell of Llaneous. Vair en point, a roundel argent goutté de larmes.

Joke names are not allowed. You cannot have "miscellaneous" as a name. Rebecca of Dapplewood would be fine. The device is OK.

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Kevin Alastair MacGowan. Vert, in pale, a Mariner's Rose and an anvil argent.

Too complex. Compass roses and Mariner's Roses are too complex to be used in the SCA. This conflicts with Anaron of the Vale of Springs: Vert, in pale a hippogriff passant guardant and an anvil argent.

Leliniel of Faelsia. Per chevron throughout to dexter azure and argent, on the line of division a chevronel counterchanged, in sinister chief a compass star elongated to base argent and in dexter an unstrung bow palewise vert.

This is a non-period division. You are welcome to document it as being in period, but until then it may not be used. All divisions in our period tended to be symmetrical.

Margala of Dovedale. Badge. Vert, a sunflower proper (Helianthus annus) within a bordure dovetailed Or.

That is not a natural sunflower. The blazon and emblazon do not agree. Send in a new drawing with a true sunflower.

Meridies, Kingdom of. (Badges for the Sciences) Sable, three calipers argent. Gyronny of six sable and argent, a pair of calipers Or.

All members of an office use the national badge for that office. Badges for subsidiary office are forbidden. All Masters/Mistress of Science should use the national Sciences badge: Per pale Or and argent, a pair of calipers sable.

KINGDOM OF THE WEST

Cliveden d'Cheiux. Gules, in pale a Catherine wheel and a Catherine wheel reversed Or.

Conflicts with Chaucer and Katherine de Roet (mundane): Gules, three Catherine wheels Or. You have only 1 point of difference. You need 1 1/2.

Elana of Coran. Argent, between two bends sinister five cat pawprints gules.

Conflicts with Amelin: Argent, two bends sinister gules. (Rietstaap) What is Coran: You cannot be of the Koran.

Gerek the Far-seeing. Azure, a Norse four-legged serpent embowed counter-embowed reversed regardant.

This is not blazonable. This is not a standard heraldic position. What is the object the serpent is passing twice through? It is not mentioned in the blazon. Those are not legs, but ears at the head and tendrils at the rump.

Kurakawa Sanjuro. Argent, a hawk stooping to sinister within an annulet gules.

Conflicts with Thorvald inn Grimmi: Argent, a hawk volant within an annulet gules. I have interchanged the two names because you placed the given name first. In Japanese, until this century, the given name always followed the family name.

Lenora di Felicie. Gules, a goblet and a chief triangular Or goutté de sang.

A chief triangular is a continental term of questionable period. Either prove it is in period or switch to per chevron inverted.

Richard of Seahaven. Badge. On a gore an ermine tail.

You cannot have a tinctureless charge placed upon another tinctureless charge. That's too much.

Wade of Many Places. Per bend sinister, per bend sable and vert, and azure, a bottle-nosed dolphin embowed argent.

Wade is an English surname. Document its use in period as a given name, or else choose a different given name. Device is OK.

End of rejections.

Pray believe, my lords and ladies, that I remain

Your servant,

Wilhelm von Schlüssel,

O.L., O.L.M., O.P., Q.O.G.
