Gunther Garrison of Hangarstad. Potenty azure and Or, a bottlenosed dolphin counter-embowed and in chief a decrescent and a mullet argent.

NOTE: A bottlenosed dolphin means Tursiops truncatus. The genus and species need not be specified if the common name for a well-known species is given. If you want a different species, you must so specify. The word "bottlenosed" means that this is a natural and not a heraldic dolphin.

Hagar Hagarsson. Bendy sinister sable and gules, a bear statant erect affronté, grasping in its forepaws a halberd bendwise argent, the bear's jaws embrued gules.

Kendra Sloane of Penmarch. Vert, three horse's heads conjoined in triskele Or.

NOTE: I have changed the field, as allowed on the submission, to vert to avoid a conflict with Dottin: Gules, three horse's heads erased Or. (Papworth, p. 928.)

NOTE: This is a lionsgator.

Winter's Gate, Shire of. Badge. Per fess indented sable and argent, an estoile throughout counterchanged.

REJECTIONS January 23, 1981 XV

Kingdom of Ansteorra

Aislinn Tara O'Neill. Sable, a tree trunk couped of its branches raguly proper, overall a hind statant argent, both entwined of ivy vines proper.

NOTE: There is insufficient contrast and this is pictorial, not heraldic. This is a non-period style. Tara is the mountain from which the O'Neills ruled Ireland. The combination is too regal.

Alec Ravensquill. Azure, on a bezant radiating four greater and four lesser wavy rays a quill bendwise sinister sable.

NOTE: Conflicts with Wendryn: Azure, a sun in glory Or.

Bordermarch, Barony of. Or, a sinister tierce embattled raguly in chevron inverted argent, fimbriated sable, in dexter a ram's horn proper within a laurel wreath sable.

NOTE: This is not a period line of division, nor was it a period design. Use embattled. The ram's horn does not have sufficient contrast against the Or field.

Burke Kyriell MacDonald. Badge. Argent, a dexter hand couped below the wrist fesswise gules, maintaining a cross crosslet fitchy azure.

NOTE: MacLean has the exact same thing. (Lyon Ordinary II - 03052.)

Cené du Vent. Azure, a chevron inverted abased argent and in chief a mullet of eight points bendwise vert, fimbriated argent.

NOTE: Device OK, but "Cène" means "The Lord's Supper" or "Holy Communion." Document Cené as a different word used as a given name or else choose another.

Cyf Ironhand Hrolfsdottir. Argent, a gauntlet reversed sable grasping three gillyflowers gules, slipped and leaved vert, within a bordure gules.

NOTE: "Cyf" is pronounced K-I-F, not S-I-F. The sound "sif" may not be used as a name, regardless of spelling, as spelling was variable in our period. You cannot use the name of a Norse god or goddess. Ellisif is an acceptable name. (It's a variant of Elizabeth.)

Isolde Dione Euves d'Argent. Or, on a pair of flaunches azure two fleurs-de-lis Or.

NOTE: Conflicts with Lothar of Rothenborg: Or, a sword fracted sable, hilted gules, between two flaunches azure. The feminine form of Dion is Dione.

Leo Exiter the Wanderer. Per chevron argent and azure, a short sword inverted Or, hilted of wood proper, winged at the hilt sable.

NOTE: Device OK. You cannot use a place name as a surname. Do not misspell a place name just for the fun of misspelling it. I would accept Leo of Exeter the Wanderer. While spellings were somewhat variable in our period, this is not one of those cases.

Orm Skjoldbidig. Argent, five scarpes gules.

NOTE: This is a rotation of the arms of Talbot: Argent, five bendlets gules. (Papworth, p. 291.) When a submission is an exact rotation of something else, there is a conflict.

Simonn of Amber. Quarterly gules and argent, a red-tailed hawk's head erased (Buteo jamaicansis) proper between in bend sinister two towers palewise sable.

NOTE: Device OK. You cannot use "of Amber" as a surname, as it implies you are a member of the royal family of the Land of Amber, in the Amber series by Roger Zelazny. You can have Amburg.

Simonn of Amber. Badge. Argent, a mountain proper, charged with a portcullis sable, chased argent, issuant from a base wavy azure charged with two bars wavy argent.

NOTE: You cannot have a mountain proper, as dirt comes in many colors. (We suggest a mountain purpure and a ford azure and Or, so you can have the purple mountain and the amber waves.)

Steppes, Barony of the. Badge for the Order of the Tread(of the Steppes). Argent, a bend indented to chief Or, fimbriated sable.

NOTE: "Tread" as a word for steps is first cited in 1712 and is thus out of period in this meaning. You could call it the Order of the Steppes (OTS).

Kingdom of Atenveldt

Alistar of Myron. Per bend sinister argent and azure, a maunch counterchanged.

NOTE: Device OK, but Myron is a given name, not a place name.

Tamara of Eldaron. Vert, on a fess nowy argent a lozenge gules.

NOTE: The place name means Land of the Eldar, which is not an allowable place name. Choose a different place name. The device is acceptable.

Thorin Christopher of Keystone. Gules, on a keystone issuant from chief azure, fimbriated ermine, above in base an estoile of eight points Or, a griffin segreant argent.

NOTE: You cannot use names of Middle Earth or Norse dwarves. They were not human. The device is acceptable. Choose a different given name.

Kingdom of Atlantia

Dougal MacDougall. Azure, a gull (Morus bassanus) counter-volant proper and a pile wavy enhanced argent.

NOTE: Morus is the genus of a mulberry plant. Give me the common name of your gull and its correct genus and species. Draw the pile four times wider at the base.

Elizabeth of Dendermonde. Azure, on a pale argent a viol proper.

NOTE: Conflicts with Cormac naConnacht: Azure, on a pale argent a sword inverted gules.

Rorik Frederiksson. Alias for Roderick MacFarlane of Glenfiddich.

Second name rejected (Rorik Frederiksson). We only allow one name per person in the College files. You can change this official name, but you cannot register two names.

Kingdom of Caid

Alexander Greylorn. Sable, a dragon segreant, incensed of icy breath, argent.

NOTE: This didn't get in the Heraldicon letter. It conflicts with Dauney: Argent, a dragon rampant sable. (Papworth, p. 980.) The counterchanging is 1/2 point and the breath is 1/2 point. He needs 11/2 points.

Amadeo da Strada Dragonessa. Argent, semé of roses sable, slipped and leaved, barbed and seeded proper, a heart azure.

NOTE: Conflicts with Wybbe: Argent, a heart azure. Try adding a bordure.

Atar Temujin. Azure, in cross rebated a decrescent between four scorpions tergiant displayed argent.

NOTE: This was bounced at Heraldicon for conflicting with Diana de Savigny: Azure, a decrescent with an orle of seven trees argent. "Temujin" was the real name of Genghis Khan.

Celine Yolanda Maysmor. Azure, scaly argent, a sea-horse rampant sable, scaled vert.

NOTE: This never got into the Heraldicon letter. It conflicts with Leif of the Blue Mountains: Ermine, a sea-horse sable, finned, scaled and unguled Or.

Dhéamohn of the Lake that Flames. Azure, a bordure of flame proper.

NOTE: Device OK. The name was rejected by Karina after Heraldicon because the Lake of Fire is found in numerous otherworlds. The use of Dhéamohn is too close to Demon, especially in conjunction with the place name.

Dhéamohn of the Lake that Flames. Badge. Argent, an ellipsoid fesswise azure and in chief a flame of nine points gules.

NOTE: An ellipsoid is not a period charge.

Enyd Draenengles. Or, a unicorn counter-rising, neck embowed, and on a mount sable a point pointed embowed trefoilly vert, fimbriated and charged with a gout Or.

NOTE: Send me a photocopy of p. 104 of Franklyn's Shield and Crest, as I do not have that reference and I will not pass a new position (counter-rising) without documentation.

Eowyn Amberdrake. Badge. Appeal denied.

Charges, monsters, and usages created between the years 1601 and 1966 may not be used under any name or description, as they are out of period. An enfield by any other name is still unacceptable.

Lorraine d'Alsace. Per bend sinister embowed and counter-embowed azure and argent, a domestic cat's head cabossed argent and a Talbot's head couped sable.

NOTE: Device OK. This didn't make the Heraldicon letter. The name conflicts with Alsace-Lorraine. As Lorraine is her mundane given name, she can use it, but she will have to use a different surname. I would prefer she use a different given name as well.

Randolph the Devious. Sable, two wings conjoined in lure inverted per pale Or and argent, thereon a dove's head and a hawk's head conjoined, counterchanged, fimbriated sable, and upon the point of conjunction a heart gules.

NOTE: This didn't make the Heraldicon letter. It conflicts with the badge of the Sufi Order: Two wings conjoined in lure inverted argent charged with a heart gules, thereon in pale a mullet and a crescent Or.

Kingdom of Meridies

Gwynnedd merch Gwynnedd yr Arvon. Sable, a hind salient, environed of five estoiles argent, upon a triple hill vert, in canton a decrescent argent.

NOTE: This was rejected in August 1977 but not sent out in a letter. This is color on color. It is also a landscape. Remove the hillock and the estoiles and it would be much better. ("Ap" means "son of." "Merch" is the correct word.)

Kingdom of the Middle

Earl of Dumnonia. Or, an oak tree eradicated between five mullets, two, two and one, azure.

NOTE: "Earl" cannot be used with a place name, as it implies the title of Earl.

Stanislav of Tartary. Sable, a serpent counter-erect proper.

NOTE: Held for information which was never sent in, namely, the genus and species of the serpent. It is therefore rejected.

Kingdom of the West

Lorayne Gillander. Gules, a bend sinister engrailed argent between on a plate a leopard's head cabossed sable and a compass star argent.

NOTE: Device OK. Please give the source and meaning of the name. Lorraine is a surname, and Lorayne appears to be just a variant. The use of Lorraine as a given name is out of period.

Mirielle Chantelle de Ferrier. Argent, a trident bendwise azure, charged with a Maltese cross gules fimbriated argent, overall a sea-horse erect counter-ermine, crined, all within a bordure azure.

NOTE: The Maltese cross is too small a charge. Remove it. Mireille, Mirelle, and Mirilla are all correct French names, but Mirielle is not. Please pick one of the correct forms.

End of rejections.

Pray believe, my lords and ladies, that I remain

Your servant,

Wilhelm von Schlüssel,

O.L., O.L.M., Pel., Q.O.G.
