Cadwallon Rudd.

NOTE: Appeal on name accepted. While rhudd is the Welsh word for red, when a man's name is followed by an adjective which is his sobriquet, the initial consonant mutates.

Guillaume au Serpent d'Or. Badge. Sable, a serpent coiled and nowed within a bordure Or.

NOTE: Draw the fimbriation and the bordure wider.

Carlos Luis Lancero. Vair, on a chevron cotissed sable a centaur passant to sinister guardant Or.

NOTE: As drawn, the centaur is in trian aspect. Turn it completely to sinister.

Francesca di Pirgallo. Azure, a bend Or, surmounted by in fess three arrows inverted counterchanged, all within a bordure counter-ermine.

NOTE: Draw the three arrows all in line, not staggered.

Godelind of Windemere. Name approval only.

Gregor Perdix. Azure, a pall inverted between two partridge's heads erased Or and an open book proper.

Holtmar of Wyrhtenatun. Barry of eight and per pale Or and gules, an eagle's head erased sable.

John Hollingsworth of Lydbury. Or, on a lozenge between in chief a cross fitchy and a holly leaf palewise vert a stag trippant Or.

NOTE: Here is an example of a charged lozenge that does not look like arms of pretence. This device is acceptable usage.

Katherine di Firenze. Badge. Gules, issuant from base a demi-sun Or and in chief a decrescent and an increscent argent.

NOTE: You cannot combine languages in a single word. Therefore, I have dropped Gildenvox. Articles and adjectives must agree with their nouns in language, gender, case and number. Therefore, I have changed de to di.

Merwydd of Effington. Name approval only.

Michael Lwenburg. Name approval only.

NOTE: The correct spelling is Löwenburg not Löweburg.

Rosemounde of Mercia. Or, a two-headed serpent erect-wavy gules.

NOTE: I find no reference to passive, so I have omitted it. It is a fine detail anyway. Please draw the heads more apart, so it doesn't look like a winged snake at a distance, as it does now.

Rowena of the Dell. Azure, a bell conjoined to a chief triangular Or.

Kingdom of the Middle

Ælthælen Dracasið. Name approval only.

NOTE: Appeal accepted.

Brotherhood of Chateau Gaillard. Badge. Per fess gules and Or, issuant from the line of division a demi-sun argent, overall a tower sable.

NOTE: The historical Chateau Gaillard was spelled as I have spelled it here, not Gaillaird

Kingdom of the West

Alvyn Eustace. Azure, a bend sinister argent between in bend sinister three mullets of four points elongated to base palewise and a goblet Or.

NOTE: It is better to call these mullets (etc.) than star-crosses, because that way they are grouped with mullets in the Ordinary rather than crosses. We already have another use for star-cross, anyway.

Aloysius Greywolfe. Tierced per pall inverted vert, argent and sable, a cross Or, a heart gules, and a bird bolt inverted argent.

Aonghais Dubh MacTarbh. Badge. Argent, a flame sable voided Or.

Loral of the Rainbow. Per chevron vert and azure, two roses Or and a rainbow proper.

Madrone, Barony of. Badge for Madrone College of Pages. Sable, on a pile inverted throughout Or a madrone sapling proper.

Margrethe of Traeet. Formerly Margarite del Bosque. Name change only.

Peter Blackbeard. Vert, on a pale between two talbots sejant respectant Or three bugle horns stringed gules.

Radnor of Guildemar. Ermine, a sword inverted Or, overall a hawk displayed, all within a bordure dovetailed gules.

NOTE: He has changed his bordure from Or to gules, which has more contrast.

Richard Ravenglas the Pure. Tierced per bend azure, Or, and argent, a cross flory sable.

NOTE: This means the bend Or takes up one-third of the diagonal width of the shield. Please draw it that way.

St. Bunstable, College of. Purpure, a husky rampant Or maintaining in its dexter forepaw a tankard argent, all within a laurel wreath Or.

Stephen of Beckenhain. Name approval only.

Tarnmist, Shire of. Azure, a blonde mermaid erect proper maintaining in both hands a goblet and on a chief embattled Or a laurel wreath vert.

NOTE: Mermaids are affrontée by default. They are also Caucasian by default in the SCA.

REJECTIONS August 13, 1981 XVI

Kingdom of Ansteorra

Aela Hroldingsdætter. Gules, two piles throughout conjoined in point azure fimbriated Or, overall in chief an Eastern Kingbird volant, wings elevated, proper. (Tyrannus tyrannus)

NOTE: Hroldingsdaetter is incorrect usage. Use Hrolding or Hroldsdottir. The device seems acceptable.

Alexander Cabalisticus Tafollow. Azure, on a pile Or an Oriental dragon rampant inverted, head embowed to sinister chief gules, and in base a plate.

NOTE: Name rejected. FaFollow does not seem to match period name usage. Cabalisticus does not exist in Latin. If you want to, you could be Alexander the Cabalist, although that name itself may be offensive to those who equate the Qaballah with black magic. The Chinese dragon cannot have five toes, as that is for Imperial use. Try four toes.

Belinda of Emeric. Argent, on a lozenge azure between two serpents erect respectant gules a longship in full sail to sinister argent.

NOTE: Device rejected. Charged lozenges are not inescutcheons of pretense per se, but this combination looks too much like a full achievement of arms. Specifically, it is the arms of Baad on a lozenge with snake supporters. Drop either the snakes or the ship, preferably the latter.

Edmound Löwengard d'Escoville. Sable, a unicorn rampant argent, crined and tufted Or, all within a bordure argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with Steede: Sable, a unicorn between ten cross crosslets argent. Mundane heraldic unicorns are usually armed, unguled and crined Or by default (see the unicorn of Scotland). Löwengard is incorrect usage. You cannot combine languages in a single word. Try Löwenheim.

Marcantonio di Carlo di Sabatini. Per bend sinister sable and gules, a rapier with bellguard proper.

NOTE: Conflicts with Dun: Gules, a sword proper (Papworth, p. 1102). During the Renaissance, Dun's arms could well have been drawn with a rapier, as that was the sword in use in those days. The name is incorrect also, as di is used for place names or surnames, not given names, and you would not have two surnames anyway.

Nord Lische Sturm, Shire of. Gules, a lightning flash couped in chief Or and on a chief embattled argent a laurel wreath vert.

NOTE: The device conflicts with the Canton of Grey Winds: Gules, in fess three lightning flashes palewise Or and upon a chief invected argent a laurel wreath vert. The name is incorrect German usage. Do you mean Nordlich or Nordlische? These are single words, while you use two. German tends to combine words most of the time. Either document the name or resubmit with correct German.

Roselynde d'Angleterre. Azure, a psaltery and on a chief Or three fleurs-de-lys azure.

NOTE: The device conflicts with the arms of the Regina Laudis Convent in Bethelem, Connecticut: Azure, a psaltery and in chief three fleurs-de-lys Or.

Terric Bearsmountain. Or, ten bears statant, one to sinister, two respectant, three to dexter and respectant, and four respectant, sable.

NOTE: Too complex. Random positions are not period style. Try Or, ten bears statant one, two, three and four, sable. The name Terric is an alchemical term; therefore, the name must also be rejected. "Terric is an ignick invention for the cheaper making of all kinds of Burnt-earths" (Oxford Eng. Dict.). Therefore, Terric is not acceptable as a given name.

Kingdom of Atenveldt

Ark Kazad. Argent, a raven close to sinister sable, bearing in its beak a ring gules, between a chief and a point pointed azure.

NOTE: The name is too close to Ar-khazad, which means King of the Dwarves, in Tolkien's dwarf language in Middle Earth. The device seems acceptable.

Kathryn of Iveragh. Badge for the Order of Ludunt Usque Stolidi Tanti. Sable, a nail inverted gules enflamed Or.

NOTE: Conflicts with William of Sark: Sable, a flame proper. Heraldically, both closing nails and passion nails are just nails. The name is too offensive for formal registration. Just register a badge for the household (House of the Fervent Kip).

Londinium ex Ruber Flumen, Shire of. Per fess azure and gules, a bridge triple-arched argent, in chief between two piles issuant from dexter and sinister chief in point Or a laurel wreath argent.

NOTE: Ex is incorrect. You should use Londinium Rubrum Flumen or Londinium Rubri Flumensis. You cannot use the name of a mundane city as part or all of a branch name. There was only one Londinium, namely, London. Why not use the Shire of Pons Rubrum Flumen (Bridge of the Red River)? Those are not piles. Piles are much wider. Why not just drop them?

Taras of Helsgard.

NOTE: Name change rejected. You cannot be "called Helsgard." Helsgard is a place name.

Widsith Devona of Exmoor. Per bend sinister azure and vert, a scarpe argent, in chief a Celtic enclosed triskelion Or.

NOTE: Device rejected. Document the charge. A triskelion is three charges conjoined in pall curving outwards.

Kingdom of Atlantia

Ammadeus Vidona of Savoy. Counter-ermine, a ram's head cabossed vert, fimbriated argent.

NOTE: Ammadeus of Savoy was the name of at least nine Dukes of Savoy. You will have to either drop Savoy or change Ammadeus. The device seems acceptable.

Atlantia, Kingdom of. Seal for the Clerk Signet of Atlantia. On a roundel a quill pen surmounted by a natural sea-horse and in base the lower-case inscription "in nomine regi."

NOTE: Seal rejected. "In nomine regi" is incorrect. "In the name of the King" is "in nomine regis." "In the name of the Crown" is "in nomine coronae." "In the name of the King and Queen" is "in nominbus regis et reginaque." Please choose one of these correct forms.

Bizek the Tynee. Badge. Or, a bull's head couped gules, armed, orbed and ringed in the nose, within a bordure sable.

NOTE: Badge conflicts with Koric the Barbarian: Or, a wolf's head couped gules within a bordure sable.

Kingdom of Caid

Kelvin Alastair MacGowan. Vert, in pale a compass rose and an anvil argent.

NOTE: Device rejected. Conflicts with Anaron of the Vale of Springs' Vert: In pale a hippogriff passant guardant and an anvil argent. The anvil should have two horns. A single-horned anvil is out of period. The compass rose should have a fleur-de-lys on top to mark north.

Kingdom of Meridies

Edward Bollingbrooke of Effingham. Or, in saltire two swords inverted between four fleurs-de-lys sable, overall a rose gules, barbed vert, seeded of a bezant charged with a cross flory sable.

NOTE: Name rejected. Edward was the brother of Henry Bollingbroke, Duke of Lancaster, who became King Henry IV of England. The red rose is the badge of Lancaster. This is too much. The cross on the bezant on the rose on the swords is excessive complexity. You cannot see the cross more than a few feet away. I suggest you drop the cross and Bollingbrooke and have the rose seeded Or.

Edward Bollingbrooke of Effingham. Badge. A sword inverted proper surmounted by a winged lion passant guardant gules, haloed, maintaining in dexter forepaw a long cross moline Or.

NOTE: What you have is a Lion of St. Mark holding a cross. This symbol is used for sacred purposes to typify St. Mark, such as the arms of a convent. What is your rationale for using it?

Godelind of Windemere. Gules, a two-headed snake double nowed sable fimbniated argent.

NOTE: Device rejected. Excessive fimbriation and excessive complexity. Simplify it.

Graeme Angus Manier. Per bend sinister gules and azure, on a scarpe Or between a unicorn's head bendwise couped and a tower argent three shamrocks vert.

NOTE: Name rejected. Angus means bull. Graeme, or Graham, as it is more commonly spelled, is a surname. Document Graeme Angus as a translation of "strong man from the grey hills." The device seems acceptable.

Guy Darkstar. Or, a lymphad, sails furled, oars in action gules, flying banners of St. George fore and aft and a pennant of St. George from the mast, and in dexter chief an estoile of eight rays sable.

NOTE: Conflicts with MacKintosh: Or, a galley with sail furled, oars in saltire, and in chief a dexter hand and forearm couped holding a dagger in pale gules (Lyon Ordinary II, 2819). What is the correct spelling of the second name? You spelled it three different ways. I do not like the idea of using banners of St. George.

Ian of the Golden Fen. Per bend sinister argent and Or, in dexter chief a compass star within an annulet wavy crested on the outside sable.

NOTE: Wavy crested is completely out of period. Try a Catherine wheel or an annulet rayonny or indented on the outside.

Katherine di Firenze. Azure, a sheet of music bendwise argent charged with four bars of music sable, surmounted by a goblet Or, in base two olive branches entwined fesswise and couped Or.

NOTE: Device rejected. The olive branches are too tiny to be recognizable as such. A sheet of music is not an acceptable charge. The goblet Or on a sheet argent is metal on metal.

Labran Gudransdatter. Purpure, on a pale pean two popinjays close proper.

NOTE: Lavran(s) is a male name. Do you really want a male name? I will need the genus, species and breed (if any) of the popinjays. There is very little contrast. Try a pale erminois. You could blazon the birds by parts, but you would still have a lack of contrast.

Merwydd of Effington. Sable, an oak tree proper fimbriated argent, charged on the trunk with a monster having the head and shoulders of a bull, the wings and talons of an eagle, and the body of a serpent, all within a bordure embattled Or.

NOTE: Device rejected. The Monster is far too small to be an acceptable charge. Fimbriating a complex charge is a bad idea, as is putting such a dark charge on sable, even when fimbriated. This would be much better with an Or or argent field and a sable bordure. Drop the monster.

Michael Löwenburg. Azure, a lion sejant affronté atop a castle, argent, portalled and illumined azure.

NOTE: Conflicts with M'Calloun: Azure, a castle argent (Papworth, p. 364).

Owain ap Dylandraig. Argent, a double-headed wyvern displayed, tail embowed and raised to chief, heads nowed, grasping in dexter paw a quill pen and in sinister paw a sword bendwise sinister sable, overall a base wavy azure.

NOTE: Name rejected; device rejected. I do not find any reference to Dylan being Welsh for sea. You do not use your father's epithet as a patronymic. You use his given name. Dylandraig is not a proper given name, and so ap Dylandraig is not acceptable. The device is overly complex. Simplify it.

Phelan Cathaoir-Mor. Gules, a bend sable fimbriated, overall an eagle displayed Or.

NOTE: In Irish, Cathach means warrior. Cathaoir, or Cathair, means chair. Which do you want? The charge overall is not a heraldic charge. It is neither an eagle displayed nor a demi-eagle nor a phoenix. Resubmit with a correct eagle displayed.

Seamus McCryu McHoo. Gules, two oxen horns conjoined at their bases Or, entwined of two cobras respectant proper, overall a sword argent.

NOTE: Name rejected. Mc is out of period. You cannot have two clan names. Pick one and drop the other. Seamus is Irish, so you might want to use the Irish form of the surname (or a Scots form of the given name). The device seems acceptable.

Shannon Louisa Chandler of Tresco. Azure, a trident argent and a chief rayonny Or.

NOTE: Conflicts with Morand: Azure, a trident argent (Rietstaap). Shannon is a modern name. Document it as period usage. The use of four names like this would have been very rare in period, especially since Louisa is not a saint's name and so would not have been a confirmation name.

Siegfried of Wilterkinde. Vert, in bend two escutcheons palewise argent, at the honour point a "filbert" voided Or.

NOTE: Document Wilterkinde. If it is German, you must use von or aus, unless it is a real place name and you want to use the English form. Document the "filbert." If that is shown in perspective (i.e., turned partly away from the viewer), then it is out of period. Why not just use an annulet?

Silvyn MacLeish. Per chevron throughout, two compass stars and a pine tree eradicated counterchanged.

NOTE: Silvyn (variant of Silvan) is not a proper given name. Try Silvia, which is from the same root. The device looks acceptable.

Simon Clovenhoof. Or, a dragon passant coward vert and on a chief of one indent gules a sword reversed proper.

NOTE: A chief of one indent is out of period. Clovenhoof is not an acceptable sobriquet, implying one is a satyr or devil. You cannot justify unacceptable sobriquets by saying your enemies gave it to you.

Sinclair Dumas. Or, a griffin segreant to sinister purpure within a bordure nebuly sable.

NOTE: Sinclair is a surname. Sinclair as a given name is out of period. You need to add a given name. The device seems acceptable.

South Downs, Barony of. Badge for Order of the Red Raven. Argent, a raven rising gules maintaining in its dexter talon a battle axe proper and in its sinister talon a roundel per pale azure and sable charged with a laurel wreath argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with Jehan de la Marche: Gules, a crow rising pierced by an arrow argent. There is little difference visually between a crow and a raven, and the difference of minor charges does not add enough difference. You have only two minor points of difference (counterchange and minor charges). Do not use the arms of the Barony as a part of a badge of the Barony. The result is a roundel with a laurel wreath too small to make out. Besides, it looks like an augmentation. The blade of the axe will not show up against the argent field.

Tetsuo Sakura. Azure, five Japanese axe heads conjoined at the spikes voided argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with a Masakari (means broad axe) mon (#8, p. 133, Japanese Design Motifs), which has five axe heads conjoined, just like yours. Voiding the axe heads is insufficient difference. Your name order is wrong. If Sakura is the family name, your name should be Sakura Tetsuo. What are those spikes pointing inwards on the axe heads? This is also close to Adrienne de Toledo's badge: Sable, five double-bitted axe heads conjoined in annulo at the blades argent.

Kingdom of the Middle

Aelfhaelen Dracasithe. Azure, a chalice argent filled and overflowing to sinister with flowers and leaves proper.

NOTE: Conflicts with Kathleen Erin-go-burne-the-Bragh: Vert, a chalice argent containing flames Or. The difference between the flames and the flowers, both of which are minor charges, is not a second full point of difference.

Kingdom of the West

Dunham Wycliffe. Sable, a lozenge within a chevron rompú Or charged in chief with a lozenge sable.

NOTE: Name rejected. Dunham is a surname, as is Wycliffe. You need a given name. The device seems acceptable, although close to: Ernst Skaptisson: Sable, a chevron rompu Or between two caltrops argent and a snail passant to sinister Or.

Frederick of Holland. Badge. Two ovoid annulets conjoined in fess argent.

NOTE: The grandfather clause means that Frederick has the use of his previously registered arms, even though it would be rejected today. The grandfather clause does not extend to further submissions. The infinity symbol is out of period and inappropriate for registration as a tinctureless charge. Abstract symbols should not be used as tinctureless badges. Otherwise, you would get people registering the signs of the Zodiac and then denying their use to others. Annulets conjoined touch at a single point, not a line. What you have is the number 8 fesswise. A person cannot register a single abstract symbol without a field as a badge. If we allowed such a practice, people would register the symbols they liked and then deny their use to others. Try: Two gouts voided conjoined in fess argent. That I will accept.

Stephen of Beckenham. Azure, chappé gules, fimbriated, a sea-horse erect contourné, sinister fore-limb upraised to mouth argent, in chief two fireballs Or.

NOTE: Device rejected. Those are not period fireballs or suns. A fireball Or is a bezant with four flames issuant from it in cross. Use this or two suns. A proper chappé would have the dexter chief point gules and the sinister chief point gules touching, not just the fimbriations. (Do you realize that you have broken the sinister foreleg of that poor sea-horse? Horses' legs do not bend that way.)
