ACCEPTANCES December 21, 1981 XVI

Kingdom of Atenveldt

Aelflaed of Duckford. Augmentation of arms. Vert, a duck rampant argent, billed and membered Or, and on a ford proper an inescutcheon of augmentation bearing Azure, in pale a sun and a key fesswise within a bordure Or.

Aelinêl von Nachtenwald. Quarterly azure and counter-ermine, on a Latin saltire throughout argent a crescent fesswise gules.

NOTE: A Latin saltire is a Latin cross bendwise.

Anlieplic Dun. Shire of. Badge. In dexter two chevronels surmounted by in sinister a chevronel, all within an annulet sable.

Eilonwy Joyeuse. Vert, a sword inverted bendwise between a wyvern erect, wings displayed, and a rose slipped and leaved bendwise argent.

Eleanor Alden of Dragonstar. Per chevron azure and sable, a wingless dragon couchant regardant between in pale two mullets argent.

Ormilda Freydis of Olmsfjord. Name approval only.

Ram Nordlilja. Per chevron sable and argent, two lilies slipped and leaved respectant and a ram's head cabossed counterchanged.

Wielhelm of the Bogs. Quarterly vert and argent, in bend sinister two four-leaf shamrocks palewise vert.

NOTE: Quartering where two quarters are a simple single tincture and the other two have only one charge each is not considered quartered arms, and is therefore acceptable. This has a field plus two charges in bend sinister. Two in bend or four shamrocks, two and two, counterchanged would also be exceptions to the rule.

Kingdom of Caid

Astra Christiana Benedict. Per fess azure and purpure, a bar argent between a mullet and a cross crosslet Or.

NOTE: Appeal accepted. Translating given names into Latin is acceptable. Her given name (Esther) means star in Hebrew. Translating star into Latin and then putting it into a female name form produces Astra.

Kingdom of Meridies

Alexander Mareschal. Azure, in saltire a recorder surmounting a dagger inverted proper.

NOTE: When two charges are in saltire, the dexter charge is mentioned before the sinister charge. Normally, the sinister charge is on top of the dexter charge. When it is not, as in this case, the dexter charge is stated to be surmounting the sinister charge.

David of Moffat. Or, a pall gules between three fleurs-de-lys, that in chief within an annulet sable.

Eleanor Woodbringer. Badge. Two logs couped in saltire proper enflamed gules.

Elen Aelfrige of Dragon's Ley. Vert, a sun in splendor and on a chief Or a dragon passant to sinister reguardant vert

Jeanne de l'Île du Cygne Noir. Per bend sinister argent and vert, a bend sinister Or between a swan statant, wings elevated and addorsed, sable and three bezants, one and two.

NOTE: Île, being feminine, takes the elided form of "de la" rather than the elided form of "du." Cygne is masculine and so takes "du."

Koppel fun Baurieux. Barry wavy argent and azure, on a pile wavy gules a salmon naiant and an osprey passant close argent.

Kingdom of the Middle

Adalard Rheinholt the Presumptuous. Name approval only.

Aed Avigdor. Name approval only.

Aelflaeda FitzAlain. Argent, on a pale wavy purpure a unicorn passant to sinister between two roses argent.

NOTE: Use a period style of wavy with much larger waves. Only members of the Order of the Rose may use wreaths of roses, so I deleted the wreath of roses. Fitz as part of a hereditary surname is in period, and so may be used by females for this purpose. If you really want a patronymic, then it should be NicAlain.

Artair MacArtair of Orkney. Name approval only.

Arwenna of Kelsley. Argent, chaussé-ployé azure, two arrows inverted in pile and in chief a mullet of eight points counterchanged.

NOTE: Chaussé-ployé looks like a pile concave throughout, except that the pile portion is the field and the sections to either side are the charges.

Awilda Halfdane. Name approval only.

Bardolf Ulfacson. Name approval only.

Durnhardt of Altenau. Checky sable and argent, on a chief gules a water bouget Or.

Enid Aurelia of the Tin Isles. Name approval only.

Eofric of Soest. Vert, a chevronel between in pale three bezants two and one and a cross formy, all within a bordure Or.

Geofry of Cyrtenham. Argent, an oak tree fructed proper atop a mount vert and on a chief arched sable a male griffin passant reguardant Or.

Glenngliondrach, Shire of. Name approval only.

Jaromir Bjarnrud. Name approval only.

Jean-Marc de Folleville. Azure, on a bend argent between a mace erect and a barrel palewise Or three fleurs-de-lys palewise azure.

Katajan d'Anglet. Argent, on a pale azure between eight pawprints sable a two-headed cat sejant affronty, tail wrapped around the legs, heads addorsed, argent.

NOTE: The eight pawprints are by default two and two on each side of the pale. They must be drawn in a rectilinear fashion, not in chevron as drawn.

Mordain Blackcloak. Per fess rayonny sable and Or, a crescent pendant Or and a mullet of eight points gules.

NOTE: Draw the charges larger.

Uta von Mainz. Sable, a sword inverted between the two halves of a broken chain fesswise abased argent.

NOTE: Abased means lowered towards base. Thus, the line of the chain passes through the nombril point.

Kingdom of the West

Alasdair MacAuley. Name approval only.

An Tir, Kingdom of. Name change from Principality of An Tir. Checky Or and argent, a lion rampant tail forked and nowed sable, crowned gules, grasping in dexter forepaw a laurel wreath bendwise vert.

An Tir, Queen. Checky Or and argent, a lion rampant, tail forked and nowed sable, crowned gules, grasping in dexter forepaw a wreath of hearts, points to center, alternating with roses gules, barbed and seeded proper.

An Tir, Kingdom of. Seal for Black Lion Principal Herald. Checky, two straight trumpets in saltire, bells to chief, entwined with a lion's tail erect, forked and nowed, erased.

Arthur of Palermo. Name approval only.

Cath Dub Ó Mhaoil Fhionn. Per pale vert and Or, a bend potenty counterchanged between an African leopard passant counter-ermine, collared and chained argent, grasping in dexter forepaw a cross crosslet fitchy vert, and two trefoils palewise in bend argent.

NOTE: I have omitted the optional hyphen for use by the College. Mhaoil Fhionn is the proper spelling, not Maol Fian.

Conrad von Graz. Ermine, six forks in fret Or within a bordure gules.

NOTE: Medieval forks had two tines.

Elonda Blue Haven. Name approval only.

Fiona the Tarnhaunter of Hazelgrove. Per chevron sable and Or, in cross a plate, a decrescent, and an increscent argent, and a fox's mask gules.

Guy de Monferrat de la Meslaye. Gyronny azure and argent, a smith's tongs and a hammer in saltire sable between in pale two flames gules.

NOTE: Draw the charges larger.

Linnet Kestrel. Or, a glove-puppet displayed affronty erased of a man vested of chain, helm and surcoat azure, atop the dexter arm a hen linnet close to sinister and atop the sinister arm a cock Kestrel close proper. (Acanthis cannabina; Falco finnunculus)

Mairi Eachach of Killearnan. Name approval only.

Marcus Evenstar of Greenleaf. Vair en pointe, on a bend embattled sable a mullet argent.

Richard Ravenglas the Pure. Badge for Maison Rosette. Per bend vert and azure, a bendlet Or, surmounted by a bouquet of three garden roses

slipped and leaved argent.

NOTE: If you want "House of the Rose," it should be "Maison de la Rose."

Satiera of Grand Chester Meadows. Name approval only.

REJECTIONS

Kingdom of Atenveldt

Michael Gerard Curtememoire. Badge for Star-Shift House. Sable, a pair of flaunches argent, overall semé of mullets of eight points counterchanged on the field, gules on the dexter flaunch and purpure on the sinister flaunch.

NOTE: This is science fiction, not medieval. This sort of counterchanging is not period style. Star-Shift House is not a period-style name. You cannot register a star-bow, which is a modern concept.

Ormilda Freydis of Olmsfjord. Vert, a serpent with heads at both ends palewise embowed, counterembowed, debruised, respectant, Or.

NOTE: Device conflicts with Bloore: Vert, a serpent bowed embowed debruised, the head erect, the tail torqued, Or (Papworth, p. 1043). Try putting the serpent between two bells in fess. Nice try.

Kingdom of Meridies

Nicholai Aleksandrovich Staritsyn. Purpure, on a pile inverted throughout between two Borzois sejant respectant argent a rose azure, barbed and seeded proper.

NOTE: Name rejected. Document Staritsyn. Nicholai should be Nikolai (or Nicolai, less commonly). Tsar Nikolai II was the son of Alexander III. Therefore, we want to make sure that the surname adequately differences you from him. Device rejected. The Borzoi is out of period, having been bred into existence in the 17th century. Try a wolfhound argent.

Phillipe de Montfort. Per bend gules and argent, a snake nowed Or and a cinquefoil sable.

NOTE: Name rejected. Phillippe de Montfort was the brother of the (in)famous Simon de Montfort. You will need to add something to the name to difference it. Note that putting l'Esprit after Philippe wouldn't work. Choosing a different given name (other than Simon) would work, as would adding a sobriquet. The device seems acceptable.

Riekin ap Gruagach. Argent, a bend embattled-counter-embattled gules, between a caltrop sable and an acorn slipped and leaved proper.

NOTE: Name rejected. Prepositions must agree in language with the words following them. Gruagach is Scots Gaelic, while ap is Welsh. Gruagach is not a name, but rather means wizard, hairy goblin, brownie, ogre, giant, champion, fearful warrior, or shaggy uncouth person (a flexible word). You will have to choose a proper patronymic. If you want to be Riekin the Shaggy, use Riekin Blewog. The device seems acceptable.

Kingdom of the Middle

Adalard Rheinholt the Presumptuous. Azure, on a bend sinister argent an acorn palewise between two oak leaves addorsed azure.

NOTE: Device conflicts with Corwinn of Thornwood: Azure, on a bend sinister argent a thorned slip embowed throughout sable.

Aed Avigdor. Sable, issuant from base a unicorn's head to sinister argent.

NOTE: Device conflicts with Collert: Sable, a unicorn's head argent (Rietstaap). Having the head issuant and reversed does not provide sufficient difference.

Artair MacArtair of Orkney. Azure, on the sail of a lymphad argent a lion passant azure.

NOTE: Device conflicts with Baad: Azure, a galley argent. A lymphad is a stylized galley.

Awilda Halfdane. Argent, on a bend gules three mullets of eight points Or.

NOTE: Device conflicts with 1) Bradborne: Argent, on a bend gules three mullets Or (Papworth, p. 251); 2) Antoine de Taillas: Argent, on a bend gules three estoilles Or (Rietstaap); 3) Paul of Bellatrix: Sable, on a bend Or three mullets of eight points gules. If two SCA arms differ; only by color (i.e., the outlines are the same), then they conflict. One reason is that, if both were used as tinctureless seals, they would be identical, which is confusing. The other reason is that we remember shapes very well, but colors only somewhat. Thus, two devices differing only in the colors of the charges would be easily confused.

Bardolf Ulfacson. Per bend sinister argent and azure, a wolf rampant gules surmounted by an arrow inverted sable, flighted Or, entwined of a serpent vert.

NOTE: Device rejected. The arrow and snake are almost entirely on either the gules or azure. This is therefore color on color. The arrow and snake combination also looks too much like a caduceus, which is restricted. It would be best to just drop the arrow and serpent.

Enid Aurelia of the Tin Isles. Per fess wavy azure and argent, on the breast of a swan naiant upon the line of division a rose argent fimbriated and in base two bars wavy azure.

NOTE: Device conflicts with Countess Sheryl of Thespis: Azure, a swan naiant argent, crowned Or. The per fess field gives a point of difference for field. The rose is at best only a minor point. Putting an argent rose fimbriated on an argent swan is a very bad idea, as there is no contrast at all.

Glenngliondrach, Shire of. Argent, on a pile ature a sun in splendor Or and in base a laurel wreath vert.

NOTE: Conflicts with Richard Kroywynn: Argent, on a pile azure a sun Or.

Graidhne Ni Ruadh. Sable, mullety Or, an increscent argent.

NOTE: Name rejected. Ruadh is an adjective, not a given name, and so you cannot use Ni Ruadh. If you want Ni, you will have to add a given name before Ruadh. If you want to be Graidhne the Red, that would be Graidhne Ruadh. Device rejected. Conflicts with Sean Macarailt: Sable, an increscent argent. Also close to Tristan de Montesporre: Sable, mullety of four points Or, in chief a decrescent argent, a base embattled Or.

Jaromir Bjarnrud. Argent, ermined, a pale Or, overall a chevron cotissed azure.

NOTE: Device rejected. What is drawn is argent, ermined Or, which is metal on metal. If you do want erminois (Or, ermined sable), then you cannot put a pale Or on it.

Jaromir Bjarnrud. Badge. Vert, a brown bear sejant erect affronty proper.

NOTE: Badge conflicts with Bess the Obscure: Vert, a grizzly bear rampant to sinister proper. There is no way to visually distinguish a bear cub from a bear, other than relative size.

Purcyfaill des Chaumière et Coeur. Per fess indented azure and gules, a wyvern passant Or.

NOTE: Name rejected. The proper French form for this name is Percival de la Chaumière et du Coeur. Purcyfaill is an acceptable Welsh name, but it would be pronounced poor-kĭh-vile. Medieval spelling variants are Percivale, Percyvallus, Percyvell, Persivell, and Persefall.

The device seems acceptable.

Kingdom of the West

Alasdair MacAuley. Argent, on an ankle boot sable four mullets of eight points, three and one, Or.

NOTE: Conflicts with Boot: Argent, a boot sable, top turned down Or, soled gules (Papworth, p. 962). Period boots did not have heels.

Arthur of Palermo. Azure, a mullet of four points gyronny sable and argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with Chalmers: Azure, a mullet argent (Papworth, p. 989) and Siegfried von Höflichskeit's badge: A mullet of four points elongated to base gyronny Or and sable.

Elonda Blue Haven. Azure, a mullet between a chevronel and a chevronel inverted interlaced and in chief two mullets argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with Elrhond Windrider: Azure, a chevronel interlaced with another inverted argent.

Mairi Eachach of Killearnan. Sable, on a pale argent three horses salient to sinister sable.

NOTE: Conflicts with Craik: Sable, on a pale argent three jays sable.

Satiera of Grand Chester Meadows. Or, in pale three newts mortant guardant sable langued gules between two goblets inverted vert.

NOTE: Device rejected. Mortant is a term from Outlandish Heraldry, and is not acceptable for official use in the SCA. (The newts are not dead yet, as mortant creatures are orbed of X's.) Badge rejected. You cannot differentiate a newt's arm from any other reptilian arm. There were no forms included for this badge. Resubmit, with the forms, as a reptile's arm. Since it is blazoned as Or, there is no need for genus and species.
