ACCEPTANCES July 30, 1984 A.S. XIX

Kingdom of Ansteorra

Ambrosine Darcy. Or, three bendlets enhanced sable and in dexter base a cross crosslet fitchy gules.

Anne MacNeill. (name approval only).

Areanna Litelpage of Redore. (name approval only).

Baldrik Blackhorse. Argent, a horse rampant sable, breathing flames, within a bordure of flames proper.

Bjorn Olegson. (name approval only).

*Bryn Gwlad, Barony of. (badge). Gules, on a saltire Or two halberds sable, in chief a mullet of five greater and five lesser points argent.

Catherine le Fleming. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device)

Claire de St. Giles. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device).

Cormac Jacobo de Vega. (submitted as Cormac Jacobo Rodrigo Joaquim MacShea e de Vega). Per fess sable and checky sable and argent, in chief an owl close guardant maintaining a chess rook in its dexter upraised talon argent.
NOTE: Shea is a surname, so MacShea is not correct. I have therefore dropped MacShea and the "e," so as to use de Vega as the surname. The use of four given names is out of period, so I have deleted the last two in order to register the device.

David of Elfsea. (submitted as David Morgan). Per fess rayonny sable and gules, an eagle displayed Or breathing flames proper.
NOTE: Draw the rayonny larger and raise the wings so they do not obscure as much of the line of partition. The name David Morgan has been changed to David of Elfsea to avoid a conflict with David Morgan of Clai Morgan (SCA).

Drusilla of Northumbria. (submitted as Drucilla of Northumbria). (name approval only)
NOTE: The C in Drucilla has been corrected to S, the normal spelling. An internal C like that in Latin or Italian would be pronounced "ch," so S would not change to C in the middle of a name like this.
Fahd Lonewolf. Pean, a wolf passant reguardant erminois maintaining in upraised dexter forepaw a kris Or.

*Gareth of Gelderland. Per chevron argent and azure, an anvil, an anvil reversed, and a bear rampant counterchanged.

Geta Alexandra din Wallachia. (name approval only).

Glaslyn, Canton of. Sable, a fess wavy argent between three oak leaves inverted palewise in fess and a laurel wreath Or.
NOTE: Glaslyn ("Bluegreen Lake") is a nonunique descriptive name applicable to the branch. (There is a large lake nearby.) Draw the waves larger on the fess.

Glaslyn, Canton of. (Champion's badge). Sable, semé of oak leaves Or.
NOTE: Draw the oak leaves as entire oak leaves. The use of partial charges in a field semy, where the charges are cut off by charges or the edge of the shield, appears to be out of period, with the single exception of France Ancient.

*Gunter von Wissenberg. (name correction from Wissenburg). Per pale sable and Or, a doublebitted axe inverted between two badger's heads banded and couped at the shoulder respectant within a bordure counterchanged.
NOTE: Draw the heads with smaller bands so they do not look voided.

Hrothgar of Farley. Per saltire Or and gules, four escallops in cross, points to center, counterchanged.
NOTE: Good heraldry.

Ian MacBaird. (submitted as Ian Mac Barden). Per bend ermine and counterermine, a boar passant per bend sable and argent.
NOTE: Good heraldry. Barden is an English surname derived from a place name and thus is not suitable for use in a patronymic byname. I have therefore changed Barden to the wellknown Scots clan name of Baird, which comes from a legendary killing of a wild boar that saved the life of King William the Lion.

Istran din Brasov. (name approval only).

*John Gareth Tailor. Or, on a cross vert between four hearts., points to center, gules, four quills, points to center, Or.

*Laura Mouren of the Isles. Per saltire azure and Or, on a sun counterchanged a natural dolphin fesswise embowed argent.
Linda of Flanders. (submitted as Talitha of Flanders). Per pale argent and azure, a pair of wings conjoined inverted and in base a serpent involved deasil, head in sinister base, and on a chief two estoiles, all counterchanged.
NOTE: Talith is a word meaning a type of headcloth. There is no evidence to show that Talitha is a valid given name. I have therefore used her mundane name instead.

Marianne Theresa von Eichendorf. (name approval only).

Morgan Haldane. (submitted as Morgan MacLlyr Haldane). Per pale vert and sable, a wyvern erect to sinister with an eagle's head and wings and lion's forelegs Or, in sinister chief a Maltese cross gules fimbriated argent.
NOTE: You can't claim to be the son of a god, so I have deleted MacLlyr.

*Northkeep, Shire of. Gules, on a saltire between four mullets of five greater and five lesser points argent, a tower sable within overall a laurel wreath Or.

Orric Blackthorn. Pean, a tower tripletowered Or, surmounted by a falcon displayed, head to sinister, gules.

Aislynn of Amberwood. (badge for House Amberwood). Per pale Or and gules, two fir trees eradicated counterchanged.

*Alexis O' Dhun Leómhan. (name change; formerly GythaKlothilde of the Mystic Dragon). (name submitted as Alexis na Caer Leoghann).
NOTE: A noun and its adjective must agree in language, gender, and case. Caer is Welsh and leoghann is Gaelic. The Gaelic equivalent of caer is dun. Placename bynames in Gaelic should use the preposition O' (of). Mistress Eriod states that the proper form is therefore Alexis ó Dhun Leómhan.

Ándrás László. (submitted as Ándrás László of Budapest. Argent, a bear's head couped sable, muzzled argent, between in saltire four holly leaves saltirewise vert, all within a bordure nebuly gules.
NOTE: Budapest is out of period, having been formed in 1873 out of the cities of Obuda, Buda, and Pest. I have therefore deleted it. Please decide which of the three period cities you want to use.

Ándrás László. (badge). Argent, four holly leaves conjoined in cross vert, within a bordure nebuly gules.

*Arion Buck of Darkwood. (name change; formerly Arion Buck of Westfalk.)

NOTE: Classic heraldry.

*Duncan Graeme. (name change; formerly Duncan Graham.)

Hrafnvarðr Ruadhan. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device).
NOTE: Batonvert states that the use of the plural (Hrafna) is incorrect in this case, so I have deleted the "a" to change to the singular (Hrafn).

*Ioannes Leckie (release of arms).

Johannes Spieß von Hochwald. Azure, in pale two spears in saltire and a stag's head erased, all within a bordure nebuly argent.
NOTE: Good heraldry. Another German word for spear is Speer.

NOTE: Good heraldry.

Leona di Francesco. Or, in pale a Tau cross sable and a cluster of grapes fesswise purpure, slipped and leaved vert.

Lyris Wordsmith. Vert, on a pale between two cat's heads caboshed Or a quill azure between two cat's heads caboshed vert.
NOTE: Good heraldry.

Máirghréad Ros FitzGarret of Desmond. Argent, in pale three roses sable between two flaunches vert, mulletty argent.
NOTE: I have added the correct accents in Máirghréad. The College felt that flaunches enhanced were not period style, so I have changed them to normal flaunches. There should be fewer mullets on the flaunches.

Melissa Irene of Silverlock. Purpure, a horned pegasus couchant, wings elevated and addorsed argent.
NOTE: Classic heraldry.

Morgan of Marionwood. Per bend sinister vert and sable, a bend sinister between a goblet and four mullets of four points in cross Or.
NOTE: Draw the charges bigger.

Andreas Seljukroctonis. (submitted as Andrixos Seliukroctonis). Per bend sinister gules and purpure, on a bend sinister dovetailed argent between two doublebitted axes Or a bull's head caboshed palewise sable.
NOTE: Andrixos does not appear to be a valid variant of Andreas, so I have changed it to the latter.

Basilia of Ravenspur. Barry vert and Or, an estoile sable pierced argent between three gouttes de sang.

Christine des Chats Noirs. (name approval only).

*Coeur d'Ennui, Barony of. Argent, a laurel wreath vert within eight boars' heads couped in annulo gules.
NOTE: Draw the charges bigger. Good heraldry.

Dragonstone, Shire of. (name approval only).

Eric Greymoor. (submitted as Cire Greymoor). Per chevron gules and argent, two wyverns passant respectant argent and a scorpion passant sable.
NOTE: Name appeal denied. Cire (pronounced sirrah) is not a valid Welsh given name, but instead is too much like Sire or Sir and is identical in sound to sirrah, the derogative form of address that is a variant of Sir. In order to pass the good device, I have replaced Cire with his mundane given name of Eric.

Erlechin de Battenhelm. (submitted as Erlech de Battenhelm). Per pale argent and azure, two winged unicorns combattant counterchanged within a bordure potenty Or.
NOTE: Erlech appears to be a surname only, so I have changed it to Erlechin, an AngloSaxon given name listed in Searle's Onomasticon AngloSaxonicum.

Estasia Angele. (name approval only).

Frances de Battenhelm. Azure, five jonquil blossoms in cross within a bordure potenty Or. NOTE: Good heraldry.

*Gwendalyn Fayrfax. Argent, a sixpetalled rose purpure, barbed vert, on a chief invected purpure a bell Or.

Jörg Müller. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device).

Lorenzo Fabbrodino di Firenze. Per pale argent and azure, a castle Or, in chief three fleursdelys counterchanged, all within a bordure sable.
NOTE: The style of battlements is a matter for the artist, not the blazon.

*Richard Randolf. (badge for Randwulf Raedwulfing). Vert, a wolf passant between in pale two fracted spears fesswise reversed.

*Shadowdale, Shire of. Or, in pale a phoenix sable issuant from flames proper and a laurel wreath vert, between two flaunches sable.
NOTE: Good heraldry.

Tamar Karanfil Evinden. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device).

Kingdom of the East

Aleksandra de Accipitre. Gyronny azure and argent, a hawk statant close sable, hooded and jessed, within a bordure gules.
NOTE: Good heraldry, but draw the bordure wider.
*Berenice Tamar of Armida. (name change; formerly Berenice Tamar Armida).
NOTE: Marion Zimmer Bradley has affirmed that Armida was a place in her novel set in medieval Spain that preceded the Darkover series.

Brian Angus McNamara. (submitted as Bhrian Angus McNamara). Pean, on a trefoil slipped Or, a lion rampant sable.
NOTE: According to all standard texts known, Brian is the correct form and Bhrian is not listed at all, so I have used Brian.

Caer Penbledd, Riding of. Argent, in pale a wolf's head caboshed sable and four roses in chevron inverted gules, slipped and leaved, all within a laurel wreath vert.
NOTE: The placement of the roses is poor style. They would be much better either omitted or in chief. They look rather cramped.

*Cassadoria Finíalla. Erminois, a peacock close tergiant pavonated proper and on a chief sable three daisies argent, seeded Or.

Conrad von Altmark. Per bend gules and sable, an eagle displayed, wings inverted, and on a chief Or, three crosses patty sable.
NOTE: Good German heraldry.

Dorigen of the Grey Gate. (name approval only).

Douglas the Red. (submitted as Arnwulf the Red). Per bend gules and Or, an eagle stooping and a wolf salient to sinister counterchanged.
NOTE: The name Arnwulf the Red conflicts with Alewulf the Red in Caid. In order to pass the device, I have used his mundane given name of Douglas.

*East, Kingdom of. Transfer of Order of Mt. Caradhras to Frederick of Feoliddwyn.
Also note: Companions of the Beaten Ass was transferred to Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane, but was listed by error under the East instead of under Alisoun.

*Freelords of Stone Keep, Shire of the. Sable, a Greek helmet Or within a laurel wreath argent.
NOTE: West Point apparently has no objection to the use of these arms.

Heinrich der Geistreiche. (submitted as Heinrich Geistmann). Per pale azure and sable, a sun in splendour Or between three billets fesswise counterchanged argent and Or.
NOTE: Geistmann would actually imply that you were a ghostman, and therefore not mortal. I have changed it to der Geistreiche (the Intellectual, or the Witty).

*Jaelle of Armida. (name change; formerly Jaelle Armida).
NOTE: Marion Zimmer Bradley has sent in a letter stating that Armida was a place name in her novel set in medieval Spain that preceded her Darkover series I therefore grant an exception to the ban on Darkovan place names to Jaelle and her sister Berenice.

Jehanne Urchurdan. (name approval only).

Johannes aus Nierenfels. (submitted as Johannes aus Nierenstein) Ermine, a Bohemian love knot azure within a bordure engrailed gules.
NOTE: Nierenstein is the specific medical term for the kidney stones that form in one's kidney. The proper word for kidney rock (a kidneyshaped rock or hill) is Nierenfels. Johannes submitted copious documentation for the period use of the Bohemian love knot as a motif. Good heraldry.

*Kathryn Goodwin. (name change; formerly Katherine Goodwyn). Argent, a goad fesswise sable entwined of a grapevine fructed proper, between two bars vert between in pale two Catherine's wheels sable.

Mikhail Gregorievich of Kiev. (name approval only).

Morgan Sheridan. Per fess embattled Or and vert, in chief a demidragon erect and in base four mullets in cross counterchanged.
NOTE: The demidragon should have more chest and a second foreleg showing. A demicreature is the front half of the creature.

Oralea Giddian. Barry wavy of eight argent and azure, upon a pile vert a seaunicorn passant, tail elevated above its head, argent, armed and finned Or.
NOTE: The pile should not be as wide as the top of the shield. The given name is possible, but would be much better as Aurelia or Orelia. Oralea will tend to be pronounced Oralie, as in the song about the maid with golden hair.

Robin Argyll du Coeur Ailé. Sable, in cross four pairs of wings conjoined argent, each charged with a heart gules.

Seosamh Ó Chóda. Or, a pale purpure between a cauldron sable and a heart gules.
NOTE: Draw the charges bigger.

*Serena Lucia of the Peacemakers. (badge for Household of the Peacemakers). Gules, issuant from dexter and sinister a dexter hand and a sinister hand proper, each maintaining a cup Or.
NOTE: Appeal granted. It turns out that Harold of Pleasure's gauntlet is not issuant, so the official blazon was incorrect and there is no conflict.

Sigrun of House Rowyntre. (name approval only).

Sophia Alleghieri Borghese. (name approval only).

*Stephen Grandchamp. (name change; formerly Patrick Mulcada).

*Steffan ap Cenydd of Silverwing. (name change; formerly Stephen of Silverwing).

NOTE: Good heraldry.

Thaddeus the Brown. (joint badge with Siobhan O'Neill for House Darkblade). Gyronny Or and vert, a dagger inverted sable.
NOTE: Please use a standard dagger design.

Trygve Sophister. (name approval only; see RETURNS for device).

NOTE: Good heraldry.

Mari Sol of Viana. (name approval only).

Mary of Fettburg. (submitted as Mary of the Meads). Per pale vert and argent, three crosses bottony counterchanged.
NOTE: Classic heraldry. Mary of the Meads conflicts with Marie of the Meadow, so I changed the name to Mary of Fettburg in order to pass the device.

Masae Lorane. Or, five piles inverted in point throughout azure.
NOTE: This is rather complex.

Masae Lorane. (badge). Azure, three bears passant to sinister Or.

*Morna ó Monadh. (name change; submitted as Morna as Monadh.)
NOTE: The name was originally submitted as Morna Monadh, which is not correct usage. The article an was inserted to put it in correct genitive form. Now it appears that she wants the preposition "of" to indicate place of origin in her name. While as does mean "from" or "of," it does so in the sense of having just come from a place. According to Mistress Eriod, in a Gaelic name the correct usage for "of" as a place of origin is "ó".

*Percival Vaughan. (blazon correction). Per chevron embattled gules and argent, two lutes addorsed in chevron enhanced argent and a rose gules, barbed, seeded, slipped and leaved vert.

Quentin Sablestar. Per saltire Or and argent, five mullets in cross within a bordure embattled sable.

Ruben ben Yosef the Khazar. (name approval only).
NOTE: Khazar is the name of the people, not the name of a place, so I changed "of" to "the."

NOTE: See NOTE under Morna O' Monadh.

END OF ACCEPTANCES

THE FOLLOWING ARE RETURNED TO THE SUBMITTOR

Kingdom of Ansteorra

Bryn Gwlad, Barony of. (badge). Argent, in saltire two halberds sable, overall a chaplet of greenbriar vert. (Smilax smilax).
NOTE: The College felt the chaplet was too similar to a laurel wreath.

Catherine le Fleming. Argent, a bend sinister gules between two talbots passant sable.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Bisset: Argent, a bend sinister gules (Papworth, p. 183).

Cerelia de Lacy of Sherborne. Purpure, a seahorse erect within a bordure embattled argent.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Jocelyn of Fairfax: Purpure, a winged seaunicorn palewise, wings addorsed, argent within a bordure Or.

Claire de St. Giles. Ermine, a cinquefoil pierced gules between two flaunches pean.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Flower: Ermine, a cinquefoil gules (Papworth, p. 868). Furs may be placed on furs so long as there is sufficient contrast, as there is here, and the result is not excessively complex.

Flavia d'Este.
NOTE: Name unacceptable. It appears to be the opinion of the College that the ducal house of Este, the rulers of Ferrara, constituted a sovereign ruling house. The citystates of Italy were essentially independent kingdoms, although they called their rulers Dukes instead of Kings. Therefore the surnames of the sovereign ducal houses of Italy come under the restriction against the use of royal surnames. Please choose a different surname.

Khatagi Kara Usun.
NOTE: Name unacceptable. Khatagi is a surname, not a given name, as seen in Bukhu Khatagi, the founder of the Khatagin tribe. Please adopt a given name.

Malachi Delacot. Per bend sinister gules and sable, four lozenges conjoined in cross Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Ian Bruce MacRae: Gyronny azure and gules, a key cross Or. A key cross is the same cross, except for the addition of small bezants at each point.

Mooneschadowe, Shire of. (badge). Sable, a bend Or surmounted by a sun eclipsed, the disc voided, the rays counterchanged argent and sable.
NOTE: This is not period style, being overly complex and an unorthodox construction.

Sean O'Malley.
NOTE: The name conflicts with Sean O'Moalain.

Thorfinn Halfdan. Sable, a fess embattled to base between a hammer, an anvil, and a heart argent.
NOTE: A fess embattled to base is not period style. Three different charges around an ordinary are not period style. Together these are too much. Please use a fess embattled or a fess embattled counterembattled, and don't use all different charges.

Timothy Flynn O'Donnel. Gules, crusilly Maltese Or, on a bend Or another azure.
NOTE: The crosses should not be cut off by the bend. The device conflicts with William de Preston: Gules, crusilly, a bend Or (Papworth, p. 190).

William of Weir. (badge for House Weir). Azure, a cross crosslet fleury concave argent.
NOTE: The badge conflicts with Cheney: Azure, a cross fleury argent (Papworth, p. 608).

Zinaida Likhitovna Umanskaya. Sable, a bend sinister gules fimbriated between a pomegranate and a bear's head erased Or.
NOTE: The proposed device change conflicts with Elaine of Wogencavern: Sable, a bend sinister gules, fimbriated Or, between a mullet and a pegasus rampant to sinister Or.

Kingdom of Caid

Hrafnvarthr Ruadhan. Gules, a bend sinister urdy cotissed urdy vairy sable and Or.
NOTE: The device is not period style and is very complex. Cotisses are too thin to be urdy vairy.

Morgan Tryggvisson. Per bend azure and gules, a bend argent between an eagle displayed Or and a Thor's hammer argent.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Gaylen the Smiling: Per bend azure and gules, a bend between two horse's heads couped reversed argent.

Kingdom of Calontir

Fionna nic Alisdair. Quarterly gules and purpure, a dormouse rampant argent.
NOTE: This conflicts with Edgar the Unready: Gules, a mouse rampant argent. What you have drawn is rampant, not sejant erect.

Jörg Müller. Argent, in chief four pellets.
NOTE: This conflicts with Prubutt: Argent, ten ogresses four, three, two and one (Papworth, p. 1054).

Leric Speltigh. (complex badge).
NOTE: Since no forms were enclosed, we cannot process this "interesting" submission.

Tamar Karanfil Evinden. Azure, a date palm tree couped argent.
NOTE: The device conflicts with South Carolina: Azure, a palm tree and in dexter chief a crescent argent.

Kingdom of the East

Francesca Desideria Borghese.
NOTE: The name conflicts with Francesca Borghese, Duchess of Bomarzo.

Griffin's Keep, Canton of the. Vert, a griffin segreant, upon a chief embattled argent a laurel wreath vert.
NOTE: The arms conflict with Robert Lauder: Vert, a griffin segreant, on a chief argent a stag's head caboshed between two fountains proper (Lyon Ordinary, 1893, p. 123).

Kathryn Goodwin. (badge). A Catherine's wheel sable.
NOTE: The badge conflicts with the city of Osnabruck: Argent, a wheel sable.

Megryth Bowbreaker of the High March. Sable, two arrows in saltire argent between in pale a heart and a heart inverted Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Pearle: Sable, two broad arrows in saltire argent (Papworth, p. 8).

Wulfwinn of Goblintooth Gap. Sable, a rustre within a bordure Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts by exact outline with Anastasia von Ansbach: Gules, on a lozenge Or a pomme within a bordure Or. I suggest you use a line of division on the bordure.

Kingdom of the Middle

Karl Aerdigwidder von Zauberberg. Sable, a pale endorsed Or, overall a pile invected inverted gules fimbriated, in chief a sun and a decrescent, all within a bordure Or.
NOTE: This is overly complex and not period style. There are seven charges plus fimbriation, plus a very thin pale, plus a very short pile inverted, plus different charges on either side of an ordinary, plus a thin bordure. Please simplify.

Seonaid ní Fhionn. Per pale vert and purpure, a crescent argent.
NOTE: The badge conflicts with the mon of Okudaira: a crescent argent on a dark background (Nion, p. 70).

Siobhan Medhbh O'Roarke. Per pale azure and gules, in pale a cinquefoil and three chevronels braced Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Alaric of the Silent Forest: Per pale azure and gules, three chevronels braced, the center chevronel surmounted by a chevronel inverted Or.
Torbin of Amberhall. Azure, goutté d'Or, a bend gules, fimbriated Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts with Richard de Stone: Azure, crusilly, on a bend Or another gules (Papworth, p. 227).

Treása Minara de Farouche Veinarde. Argent, a cat sejant and a base sable.
NOTE: Name and device returned. There was considerable inaccuracy or misrepresentation in the material in the LoI. The submission may have been rejected at the kingdom level on April 12, 1982, but it never reached this office. Neither Trea'sa nor Tresa appear on p. 124 of Yonge, as claimed. Farouche means "wild, fierce, sullen, or shy," rather than "clover," as claimed. Veinarde means "lucky person," rather than "crimson," as claimed. Minara is not listed as a variant of Minard on P. 435 of Dauzat. It would appear that the name was totally made up and then later defended with false documentation. This sort of misrepresentation should be severely discouraged. A valid form of the name would appear to be Thérèsa Minard la Veinarde Farouche. The device conflicts with Meggison: Argent, a lion sejant sable (Parker, p. 375).

Trygve Sophister. Azure, an oak tree eradicated argent and a chief potenty gules and Or.
NOTE: The device conflicts with the Barony Beyond the Mountain: Azure, an oak tree eradicated argent and on a chief enarched Or a laurel wreath en soleil gules.
