4 September 1984, A.S. XIX

Unto the members of the College of Arms,

from Baldwin of Erebor, Laurel King of Arms.

Courteous greetings,

'Struth, but it's hot! hardly the most auspicious weather in which to begin my first Letter of Acceptances and Returns. The enclosed are from the College of Arms meeting held at the heraldry symposium in the Barony of Loch Salann, consisting of 38 approvals and 13 returns, for a modest total of 51 trans actions.

HERALDRY SYMPOSIUM

The symposium was a relaxed and pleasant event. Attendance was light, with most of the complement being made up of heralds from Atenveldt, although there were a handful of attendees from the West, Ansteorra, Meridies, and Caid. Classes were given on Old Norse and Japanese Naming Practices, Points of Difference, and Ecclesiastical Heraldry. The feast Saturday night, prepared under the direction of Lady Aethelvynn Thraedgyld, was both tasty and plentiful. Sustenance of a different nature vas provided by The Lemmings (Loch Salann's instrumental music group) and Morley or Less (Master Wilhelm and Mistress Cynthia's vocal consort). On behalf of the College of Arms, I would like to thank Lord Gustav Athanasius von Hausenstadt for his work as autocrat for the event.

Copies of the Proceedings (128 pages, spiralbound, including the revised Rules for Submissions) are available from Lord Gustav for $7.50 postpaid. The address to write is: Erik Richtsteig, 2607 South 700 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84106. Checks should be made payable to Office of the Crystal Pursuivant.

MAILING LIST

There are, of course, a couple of changes to the mailing list. Master Wilhelm von Schlüssel is now Laurel Emeritus. Also, please add the White Stag Herald (Principality of the Outlands), Lady Lucie de Villebruyant Boniface; Judy Aten, 155 Comanche Circle, Green River, WY 82935. (The ZIP code given for her on the roster is incorrect.)

TWENTY YEAR CELEBRATION

The SCA Twentieth Year Celebration now has a newsletter, edited and published by Mistress Flavia Beatrice Carmigniani and Master John ap Griffin (Bjo and John Trimble). The cost is $5.00 for "all issues published between now and March, 1986." Subscription checks should be made out to John Trimble; the address to write is 696 South Bronson Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90005. The Trimbles are offering a free TYC admission (currently worth $15) to the individual who comes up with the best name for the newsletter (currently called The TYC News). The deadline for suggestions/entries is September 30, 1984.

PERSONAL STAFF

In answer to a couple of questions, my personal staff is made up of between half a dozen and a dozen volunteers who help with the administrative burden of the Laurel office, doing sorting and filing, and reviewing and discussing letters of intent and cement at the monthly Laurel meetings. They are members of the Caid College of Heralds, and are warranted by Crescent Herald, not by me. Unlike Virgule, Batonvert, and the other people on "the Laurel Staff," the members of my personal staff are not considered to be members of the College of Arms.

ET CETERA

The Laurel files arrived last week, through the good graces of Clarion King of Arms (on whom be praise), who drove a truck down to WorldCon. The file cabinets and the library are more or less in place, and I've just finished entering the bibliography on the word processor.

By way of a reminder, the second editions of Precedents I and II are slated for publication at the end of this month. Precedents I costs $4.00, plus $1.40 for First Class postage, or $1.05 for Third Class. Precedents II is $3.00, with First Class postage costing an additional $1.25, and Third Class, $.95. All prices are in US$. Orders destined for Canada should probably go First Class; I'm not certain of the "international" status of Third Class mail. Checks should be made payable to Derek G. Foster. Precedents of the S.C.A. College of Arms is not an official publication.

That's it for this mailing short and sweet. The actual September letter, due out in about three weeks, will of course be larger. Until that time, my lords and ladies, I remain,

Your servant,

Baldwin of Erebor

Laurel King of Arms
