28 JUNE XXII (1987)

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE APPROVED:

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Ælfred Lionstar of Ravenspur. Name and device. Pean, a mullet inverted gules, surmounted by a mullet between three lion's heads Or.

Alfred Jenson of Mo. Name and device. Argent, a pile bendwise throughout gules between a cross formy fitched at the foot and a hawk's head erased sable.

Baragan Baildagci Babagai. Name only (see PENDING for device)

Burning Sands, Shire of. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Ceridwen ferch Rhys. Change of device. Erminois, on a bend sinister sable a garden rose, slipped and leaved, Or.

Her old device is released: "Per bend sinister wavy sable and Or, an estoile Or and a garden rose sable, slipped and leaved vert.".

Clea de Hunedoara. Badge. Argent, a sirin harpy statant guardant to sinister proper within a bordure engrailed purpure.

Dafydd Caramon. Name and device. Gules, a bend azure, fimbriated Or, between three annulets interlaced, one and two, and three swords palewise argent.

Edric the Unsteady. Transfer of badge from Clea de Hunedoara. Vert, a cockatrice erect, maintaining in is upraised dexter claw a needle palewise, point to chief, within a bordure engrailed Or.

Eirianedd o Randir Mawr. Device. Argent, a hawk rising, wings addorsed and inverted, sable, issuant from sinister three wolves' teeth gules.

Antoine de Breton. Name and device. Quarterly gules and purpure, a peacock feather bendwise Or.

The name was submitted as Entwa de Breton. As the commentors felt the given name was neither plausible nor French, the "fall-back" given name has been substituted.

Erlwin Nikolaus vom Schwarzwald. Name and device. Per saltire pean and Or, a pantheon rampant gules, mulletty of six points Or.

After lengthy consideration, we have decided that, given the wording of the current rules on contrast, which specifically allow placement of gules on pean, this submission must be permitted. The submittor should be informed, however, the unusual monster will be virtually unidentifiable since the distinguishing features are almost entirely on a relatively low-contrast field. Were the tinctures of the field reversed (i.e., the field was "per saltire Or and pean"), the pantheon would be much more recognizable.

Gytha of the Bows. Device. Purpure, a cup inverted, its bowl pierced by an arrow fesswise, barb to sinister, all within a bordure wavy Or.

Haakon Silverram. Device. Pean, a ram's head cabossed, on a chief wavy argent a stag's attire gules between two roses sable, barbed and seeded proper.

Katryn Runereader. Device. Vert, ermined argent, a wheel of six spokes sable surmounted by a torch argent.

Llewellan Gwynn. Name and device. Per fess indented of two points sable and argent, in chief an eagle rising argent.

Lothaire de la Glace. Name and device. Lozengy azure and Or, on a pile throughout dovetailed sable, a seagriffin argent maintaining a halberd Or.

The name was submitted as Lothaire du Glace. As "glace" is a feminine noun, the prepositional phrase required modification. The submittor should be told to drawn the lozengy and the dovetailing on the pile more boldly.

Magdalen Anne Catherine Ravenstein. Name only (see PENDING for device).

Malinda Tremayne. Name and device. Or, a unicorn rampant and in chief two cinquefoils, all within a bordure nebuly purpure.

Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy. Transfer of badge for Gildiya Sirinov from Clea de Hunedoara and release of badge and household name. Or, a sirin harpy statant guardant to sinister proper within a bordure engrailed vert.

Nikolai Dmitri Zhdanovich Dolgorukov. Name and device. Per pale embattled sable and gules, a crooked staff bendwise sinister between two wolves' heads addorsed erased argent, all within a bordure ermine.

The name was submitted as Nikolai Dmitri Zdanovich Dolgurukovich. The proper transliteration of the given name which his documentation indicated was to form the patronymic is "Zhdan" so the patronymic has been modified. The family name "Dolgorukov" is documented in the sources cited on his paperwork, not an unusual second patronymic so the name has been further modified as his paperwork allowed.

PRECEDENT: In the October, 1986, precedent defining "simple cases" where complex lines of division might be used in a field party of two colours, it was stated that "No charge shall overlie the line of division". I have been persuaded that that wording is too sweeping and does not allow for exceptional cases such as this. Please replace Criterion 1 for a "simple case" with the following:

1. No charge shall significantly obscure the line of division.

Paul Macclesfield. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Randall Morgan. Badge. Pean, a demi-griffin conjoined to a wyvern's tail erect within an orle Or.

Richard Hatch of Devon. Name and device. Argent, a griffin segreant gules, maintaining a halberd sable, between three card piques gules.

The name was submitted as Richard Hatch of Cornwall. For some this created too strong an echo of Richard of Cornwall, King of the Romans. Aten, who was present, indicated that he would be as happy to be from Devon as from Cornwall so this modification was made.

Rickard Tristen O'Terry. Name only.

Ruben Klaus Winterhalter. Name only (see PENDING for device).

Sabine od Vlatavy. Name and device. Per pale Or and azure, a swan statant, wings displayed and inverted, proper and in chief a decrescent and an increscent counterchanged.

Taysa Ariello. Device. Per pale argent and vert, on a compass star between two dragons volant palewise in annulo, a wolf's head cabossed, all counterchanged.

William of Artemisia. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Per pale wavy argent and azure, a watchtower sable charged with a cross bottonny and in pale three swans naiant argent.

The submission was made under the name William du Somerville. He should be informed that the appearance of impalement of the arms of Frederick of the West Tower ("Argent, a tower sable, on its base a cross patonce, voided argent.") made a number of heralds very twitchy.

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE RETURNED:

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Burning Sands, Shire of. Device. Or, in pale a serpent nowed to sinister sable environed of a laurel wreath vert and a sun sable between two flaunches pean.

There was strong feeling on the part of the commenting heralds that the design, particularly the exiguous laurel wreath about the thin and complexly nowed serpent was too complex visually for group arms. As the Principal Herald was present and felt that the group would be amenable to a redesign of the arms, the submission was returned for simplification.

Paul Macclesfield. Device. Argent, a hawk displayed, wings inverted, maintaining a garden rose fesswise gules, slipped and leaved, all within an orle vert.

The sense of the meeting was that this was a conflict with the arms of the Tirol ("Argent, an eagle displayed gules, crowned, armed and with "klee stengeln" Or.", cited in Woodward, p. 255). These arms were felt to be famous enough from their period and modern use to deserve extra protection and, since the "klee stengeln" in period seem to have been merely lines delineating the anatomical construction of the wings.

William du Somerville. Name only.

There were two problems with this name. First, it should be William de Somerville. Secondly and more importantly, it conflicts with the name of William Somerville, an eighteenth-century English author who wrote a considerable amount of blank verse on hunting and field sports (he is frequently cited in commentary on Tom Jones).

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE PENDING:

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Baragan Baildagci Babagai. Device. Quarterly Or and argent, a winged bear rampant to sinister, wings elevated and addorsed, sable, grasping in its dexter forepaw a mace gules.

The blazon on the letter of intent stated correctly that the field was quarterly, but the emblazon showed the field as per saltire, creating confusion among the commentors. The device is pended until the September meeting to permit proper checking for conflict.

Donal MacMurtrie. Badge for Clan MacMurtrie. Three mullets in fess gules.

The badge was submitted with the mullets "encircled by a buckled leather belt proper". Commentary in the College supported Master Wilhelm's ruling of August, 1982, that "clan badges can only be displayed by clan members within a belt. . .The chief does not use the belt." Aten, present at the meeting, indicated that the submittor would accept registration of the badge without the belt. The submission is therefore pended until the September meeting to allow the College to do complete conflict checking on the simpler badge.

Magdalen Anne Catherine Ravenstein. Device. Argent, a bend gules, overall a raven volant bendwise sinister sable, all within a bordure compony sable and argent.

There seemed to be considerable feeling in the College that the bordure compony which included as one of its tinctures the tincture of the field should not be permitted. Yet the Rules for Submission specifically use a bordure counter-compony as an example where a divided tincture charge which shares one tincture with the field may be used (AR1c). In both cases there are "islands" of the non-field tincture hovering on the field, although the underlying identity of the charge is a trifle clearer in the case of counter-compony. We could find only one mundane example of this phenomenon (the family of Irriberi who bear "Or plain, within a bordure compony of eighteen pieces of azure and the field", cited by Woodward, p. 171) and this was not dated. Still, the logic of allowing a bordure counter-compony in these circumstances and not allowing a bordure compony is unclear. We solicit further comment from the College on this issue and will make a decision at the September meeting.

Ruben Klaus Winterhalter. Device. Pean, in pale a hickory leaf and a unicorn's head, erased and sinister facing, argent within a double tressure gules.

The device was blazoned with a double tressure, but the emblazon showed a bordure gules charged with an orle sable, which would not be licit. Aten indicated that his desire was to "match" the device of his wife, Isabella Eugenia Cortez. When her device was passed in August, 1983, Master Wilhelm modified the peculiar double tressure she submitted ("thrice indented in pall"!!!) to a normal tressure. It is drawn away from the edge of the shield and overlying the ermine tails of the field. Since this gentle wishes to match this device, he would presumably be happy with this arrangement. We will register this as soon as Aten provides us with an emblazon sheet that matches the blazon.
