JANUARY XXIII (1989)

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE APPROVED:

KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA

Alexandros Dietrich vom Einhornwald. Device. Or, issuant from chief a chevron inverted and in base two unicorn's heads, couped and addorsed, azure.

Ansteorra, Kingdom of. Title for Tamarisk Herald.

Ansteorra, Kingdom of. Title and badge for Star Signet. On a scroll unrolled palewise argent, a mullet of five greater and five lesser points within in annulo the words "littera scripta manet" sable.

Branwen Scholastica. Change of name from Branwen filia Marci. The submittor is to be congratulated on an authentic and most appropriate byname.

Bryn Gwlad, Barony of. Badge for Order of the Dreigiau Bryn. Or, a wyvern erect gules maintaining a halberd palewise sable, overall a triple-peaked mountain, issuant from base, vert. Note that, while the monster was blazoned as a demi-dragon on the letter of intent, so much of its body was visible (and that without hind legs) that it really was necessary to blazon it as a wyvern. Society terminology follows the later English tradition which distinguishes between the two-legged wyvern and the four-legged dragon, although this distinction seems not to have existed in the earlier period and still does not exist in continental heraldry. Indeed, the cant on "dragon" or "drake" appears to be equally well-satisfied by either wyvern or dragon, if one is to judge by actual mundane examplars, English and continental, so the Barony's intent is still preserved here, despite the change in blazon.

Galen Niccoli. Name only. The name was submitted as Gaylen Niccoli.Careful examination of a number of period sources (including the OED) indicates that the "glide" vowel was only added to the last syllable in period (for "Galyen" or "Galien"). Therefore, since the submittor allowed minor changes in spelling, we have substituted the closest documented form of the name.

Isabel Vyell MacLeod. Name only (see RETURNS for device). The name was submitted as Isa Vyell MacLeod. By the submittor's own documentation, this form appears to be a pet name for the period name "Isabel" (the allusion to an older Germanic form in Yonge is undated and we could not locate any period examples of this form). As the submittor indicated she would accept any changes necessary to register the name, we have substituted the documented full form of "Isabel".

Ivan von Kleist. Device. Sable, a chevron engrailed between two sea lions, erect and respectant, and a compass star, all within a bordure Or.

Mairgreg of Bryn Gwlad. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Argent, a wyvern azure, on a chief wavy vert, three escallops argent. The submission was made under the name Mairgreg nighean mhic Graeme.

Maureen Callaghan Dolan. Name and device. Vert, a compass rose bendwise between in cross four compass stars Or.

Rebekah Kleinspielerin. Name and device. Argent, on a bend sable between two roses azure, seeded Or, a hart lodged fesswise argent. The name was submitted as Rebekah Kleinenspielerin. As German normally uses the uninflected form of the adjective to form compounds we have modified the byname.

Regina Gunnvor Morgenstjerne. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Riccardo di Pisa. Badge. Argent, an eagle's wing terminating in a hand gules, maintaining a scimitar fesswise reversed sable. Note that this is clear of the arms of the Dukes of Calabria by both tincture of the field (which is specified here) and the tincture of the charge: were this a fieldless badge, this would not be the case.

Siegfried der Unverzagt von Brandenburg. Name only. The name was submitted as Siegfried der Unverzangte von Brandenburg. We have corrected the byname to the correct German spelling for "undaunted."

Silvia la Cherubica di Viso. Name and device. Quarterly azure and argent, a cross invected counterchanged between in bend two blonde cherub's faces proper, winged argent, and in bend sinister two fleurs-de-lys gules. The submission was made under the name Silvia de Fiorenza la Charubina Faccia. As "la Charubina Faccia" is not the proper Italian form for "the Cherub-faced" and the submittor asked that any changes necessary be made to the name, we have substituted the idiomatic Italian formation for the desired byname. We were compelled to agree with Krakena and Crescent that the use of "de Fiorenza" (which is in any case ungrammatical) was presumptuous when placed in conjunction with a device which essentially quarters the arms of Florence. Therefore, we have dropped the geographic byname to register the device.

Siona Devereaux. Device. Argent, two quill pens in saltire sable, on a chief azure a rapier fesswise argent.

Sutan Bloodaxe. Device. Quarterly gules and argent, two double-bitted axes in saltire within a bordure, all counterchanged.

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Atenveldt, Kingdom of. Title for Azure Pursuivant. While the weight of evidence is against the use of heraldic titles which does not include at least one noun, "azure" appears in period to have had a primarily nominative meaning. Its earliest usage (c. 1350 according to the OED) seems to have been for the stone lapis lazuli. Its use as an adjective appears in the late fifteenth century in the heraldic context and somewhat later for more general descriptions of things blue.

Bariah ben Meir. Name and device. Sable, a goblet between in cross four mullets of six points argent, in chief three bezants in fess. The name was submitted as Borah ben Meir. While Meir is well-documented period Jewish given name, noone could find any documentation for "Borah". As the submittor's mundane given name is "Barry" and the forms note that he is known by this name in the Society, we suspect he was attempting to approximate that name and therefore have substituted the much closer Biblical masculine given name "Bariah" (the name of one of the six sons of Shecaniah).

Chrisogone Thomas of Portsmouth. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Richard Demaris. Name and device. Per pale potenty sable and argent, a cock passant to sinister and a bull rampant counterchanged. As Hund has noted, Ector de Maris was the name of the brother of Lancelot in Malory.

Sarah Thomasyn. Name and device. Argent, three tulips gules, slipped and leaved vert, in chief a butterfly volant bendwise, wings elevated and addorsed, azure. Reaney (Dictionary of British Surnames, p. 346) cites this form of the surname as early as 1327.

Sweyn Halvhand Arnsson. Device. Per bend sinister argent and sable, two hands, couped and fracted palewise, counterchanged.

Michael O hUigin. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Argent, scaly sable, a dragon displayed, head to sinister, and on a chief sable, three towers argent. The submission was made under the name Tadhg Ambros o hUigin. We have used his mundane given name to form the holding name.

KINGDOM OF ATLANTIA

Angharad verch Rhuawn. Device. Sable, a rowan branch argent, fructed gules, within an orle argent, charged with six clusters of three rowan berries gules.

Arlis Behrendsdohtor. Device. Barry of four azure and argent, on a pale gules, a spoon, bowl to chief, argent.

Aubrey Gawen. Name only (see RETURNS for device). The name was submitted as Aubrey de Gawen. As a careful examination of Reaney and other sources revealed no example of this patronymic surname used with the preposition, we have dropped this to register the name. We note that the submittor's forms indicate that he originally desired the given name "Alberich": this would be a perfectly acceptable alternate for the given name.

Barbara of Cambion. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Beornheard of Wearmouth. Name only. The name appeared on the letter of intent as Beorhheard of Wearmouth, but the forms indicate that the submittor desired the documented spelling used above.

Bleiddian y Llwynonn. Name and device. Argent, a wolf's head, erased and sinister facing, on a chief triangular azure, an increscent argent. The name appeared on the letter of intent as Bleiddian y Llwywonn, but the (difficult to decipher) forms indicate that the submittor desired the form documented by Brachet.

Brian du Bois Breton. Name and device. Quarterly embattled argent and vert, in bend two harps vert and in bend sinister two stags springing argent. The name was submitted as Brian du Bois Bretonne. As "bois" is a masculine noun, we have substituted the masculine form of the adjective.

Caitlyn O'Duirnin. Name and device. Per fess argent and vert, two dolphins naiant fesswise in annulo within an orle counterchanged.

Corun MacAnndra. Name and device. Per chevron argent and vert, in chevron three mullets of eight points pierced sable and a harp argent. The name was submitted as Corum MacAnndra. As this could not be plausibly documented as a variant form of the Welsh "Corum" and is a documented place name in Turkey as well as a variant spelling for a "quorum", we have substituted the documented Welsh given name.

Cosimo of Venice. Name and device. Or, a garb of three oak braches between two linden leaves inverted vert, all within a bordure rayonny purpure. Please ask the submittor to draw both the linden leaves and the bordure in a bolder, more heraldic manner.

Constantine Nikephoros Akrites. Badge. Argent, on a bend between two quatrefoils, barbed and seeded, sable, a double-bitted axe argent, all within a bordure sable.

Dafydd ap Gwystl. Change of device. Argent, on a bend engrailed between six gouttes azure, an arrow Or. This was pended from the August meeting, but accidentally omitted from the December letter.

Donnabhan Keegan Bothwell. Device. Per bend embattled gules and sable, in sinister chief a thistle blossom within a bordure argent.

Doran Campbell. Name only (see RETURNS for device). The name was submitted as Doran Campbell of Innis Chonnell. As Innis Chonnell was the original hereditary seat of the Campbell chiefs, this seemed more than a trifle presumptuous. We have therefore dropped the place name.

Emeric of the Outlands. Name and device. Per pale sable and gules, a phoenix Or issuant from flames of fire proper themselves issuant from a base rayonny Or charged with a tower sable. While White Stag indicates that the submittor may be contemplating a different submission, we feel bound to register this to him since it seems to have been properly submitted while he was still in Atlantia. At the least this will provide a "place marker" for his name and current submission.

Gwendolen ferch Dai. Name and device. Quarterly argent and azure, a seahorse , erect and sinister facing, counterchanged. Although "Dai" is a diminutive form of "Dafydd", Brachet has documented its independent use in period.

Heinrich von Kreiner. Badge (see RETURNS for household name). Per pale sable and gules, in pale a mountain of three peaks couped argent and three hammers palewise, one and two, Or.

Helen Whitmore. Name and device. Argent, fretty vert, a bend sinister purpure, ermined argent. Please ask the submittor to draw the fretty properly, with a lot fewer and much fatter lathes.

Kateline Finch. Name only.

Leuerun Sveinsdottir. Name and device. Purpure, a sword inverted argent between two flaunches and a demi-sun issuant from base Or.

Mægwynn O'Cearbhallain. Name only. Although the letter of intent had the undocumented spelling "Maegwynn O'Caireallain", the forms showed the correct, documented form given above.

Markus Wilhelm von Reilingen. Name and device. Quarterly gules and azure, a rabbit sejant Or. As we have traditionally allowed a major point of difference for the posture differences between "couchant" and "sejant", this is clear of Melusine Whitcroft the Petite ("Per saltire sable and azure, a hare couchant, ear extended to sinister, Or.").

Michael Limner. Name only.

KINGDOM OF CAID

Angus MacMichael. Badge. Purpure, a claymore argent, overall a lion passant guardant dismembered Or.

Anna Hroswitha von Adlerstein. Badge for Widow's Abbey. Argent, in pale a triangle inverted and a triangle conjoined gules, overall a spider sable.

Canyons, Canton of the. Badge for Cantonal Levy. Per fess gules and vert, a fess dancetty argent between a mullet of seven points Or and a bezant.

Cellach Macrae. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Dominic of Warwick. Name only.

Dawn Marie O'Toole. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Vert, a Celtic cross argent between four crescents, horns outwards, Or. The submission was made under the name Elasia O'Toole.

Emma Rose Cuffe of Summerwood. Device. Vert, a snail within a bordure rayonny Or.

Halldór Skaptason. Name and device. Sable, a triquetra argent within an orle of bezants.

Harald of Madmarch. Change of blazon. Quarterly sable and vert, a hare rampant to sinister within a bordure engrailed argent. When the device was registered in June, 1988, the beast was blazoned as a "coney" because we felt that it was actually a rabbit, not a hare. While many modern folk would not realize it, there is a distinction (and not just to rabbits and hares!). As in the case of a number of other beasts of the field, the addiction to hunting in the medieval world led to ready recognition and distinction between beasts that we would not recognize as different at all, even when they appeared in the abstracted world of heraldry: "The hare. . .is not so much in evidence as the rabbit, whose heraldic name, coney, brings him into canting settings." (Franklyn, Shield and Crest, p. 106). All this being said, we are prepared to accept that the submittor intended to draw a hare, not a rabbit, and trust that he will in fact do so in the future.

Linnet of Liddington. Name and device. Quarterly azure and Or, four linnets counterchanged.

Maelen Gwynonwy of Ravensfield. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Margarethe Rosamund aus Trier. Name and device. Or, a bay sagittary salient to sinister proper, crined sable, within a bordure purpure.

Matsuyama Yoshitoshi. Name only.

Matti Turkulainen. Badge. Azure, a lucy between three lozenges argent. Sorrowful Irreverent Comment from a member of the Laurel staff: "The Beatles may not be period, but they date to at least A.S.I; why does it make me feel so old when only Berkeley and the Laurel staff got the cant?"

Megwynne Seonaid of Loch Lomand. Device. Vert, a sprig of heather within a bordure wavy argent.

Michael Dahlgren of Blackmountain. Name and device. Or, a pall inverted wavy azure between three mountains erased sable. Although the mountains were blazoned as couped, in fact they do not have the straight line at their base that we associate with couping (this is particularly noticeable in the case of the mountain in base). We have therefore reblazoned them as "erased" (although on wag on Laurel staff suggested that "eradicated" might be more appropriate. . .)

Sarlin le Greye. Change of name from Sarlin the Grey.

Takeda Tetsuzo. Badge for Black Dragonfly Clan. A fret couped argent, overall a dragonfly sable.

Wulfric of Creigull. Name and device. Vert, on a pale engrailed between two Latin Crosses argent, a lupin flower vert.

Ygraine o Gaerllion Fawr. Change of name from Ygraine of Calafia.

KINGDOM OF CALONTIR

Bronwyn nic Dougal. Name and device. Azure, a horse passant argent and in chief three plates in fess, all within a bordure embattled argent. Although the name was spelled Bronwen on the letter of intent, the form above is what was registered in August, 1988.

Guillaume of Faireskye. Device. Vair, a demi sun, issuant from chief, Or and a base vert.

Gwilym ap Gwiylm. Device. Vert, two swords in saltire, on a chief triangular embattled argent, a boar's head couped gules.

Jocelyn de Biers. Device. Per bend sinister argent and azure, a bear rampant to sinister sable and a mullet of eight points Or.

Katharine Attryde. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Mairi Bhan. Name only. While the given name appeared on the letter of intent as "Maire", the forms showed that the submittor desired the Gaelic form ending in "i". While the selection of the example used in the commonest Gaelic grammar books to demonstrate the use of lenition in adjectives may show a lack of creativity, it is not illegal. (Mackinnon's Gaelic: A Complete Course for Beginners uses "Mairi bheag bhan" in Lesson 1.)

Marie Eichmann. Name only.

Richard de Montmorency. Device. Per bend argent, ermined gules, and gules, ermined argent, an anvil sable between in bend a dragon rampant to sinister sable and a dragon rampant argent. Please ask the submittor to draw the anvil larger.

Shena MacTavish. Name and device. Vert, a saltire between four oak leaves, all within a bordure argent.

Valentine Hawkwood. Device. Per pale azure and Or, a sun counterchanged Or and gules within a bordure counterchanged.

KINGDOM OF THE EAST

Grimbold of Settmour. Spelling correction. When the name was registered in August, 1988, the "b" was mistaken for an "h" on the forms.

Philippe Attaignant. Device. Or, on a chevron inverted gules, an increscent and a decrescent argent, overall a unicorn rampant to sinister, in chief a fleur-de-lys sable. When this was registered in November, 1988, the inversion of the chevron was omitted from the blazon (Freudian. . .?).

Simon Dubh Mac Brian O Glen Rannoch. Device. Per chevron gules and argent, a sword counterchanged between in chief two lions combattant Or. When this was registered in July, 1988, the lions were erroneously blazoned as merely "rampant".

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Adrian de Bretigny du Cabochon. Change of device. Per chevron Or and gules, in chief three crescents, one and two, gules and in base a sun eclipsed Or. This submission had been pended from the October meeting because of a tincture omission on the letter of intent.

Berhtrad Athalbrand von Strassburg. Name and device. Per bend azure and paly bendy sinister gules and argent, on a bend sinister argent, a sword sable, in dexter chief an opinicus statant argent.

Brigid Morin. Name only.

Elizabeth Curry. Name and device. Per fess argent and vert, a red-haired Caucasian Greek sphinx proper, furred Or, winged displayed azure. When this was registered in August, 1988, the sphinx was denoted as "Green". Brigantia is, of course, correct in stating that it should be "Greek".

Elsbeth of Ravensfall. Name and device. Sable, an Arabian lamp between in pale a mallet fesswise reversed and a hammer fesswise, all within a bordure Or.

Ethelinda Orlogyr. Name only.

Jane Falada of Englewood. Device. Argent, a chevron vert, platy, in chief three English ivy leaves conjoined in pall inverted, slips to center, vert. This submission had been pended from the October meeting because of a tincture omission on the letter of intent.

Novus Matisco, Shire of. Device. Argent, two jester's staffs in saltire and in base two chevronels, all within on a bordure azure, a laurel wreath argent.

Simon McLeod. Name and device. Per chevron counter-vairy sable and argent, and sable, a chevron and in base a cross formy Or.

Thjodulf Grimsson. Name and device. Argent, on a fess gules between two ravens volant, wings addorsed, sable, two mallets palewise argent. The name was submitted as Thjodulf Skallagrimsson. As Skallagrim has previously been ruled to be a unique designation for Grimr Kveldulfsson, we have dropped the adjective epithet to make the patronymic more generic in order to register the name and device.

KINGDOM OF THE MIDDLE

Ælfreda æt Æthelwealda. Name only. Note that technically "weald" belongs to the "U declension" in Old English and so the dative ends in "-a" rather than the "-e" which is more usual for the masculine (Mitchell and Robinson, A Guide to Old English, p. 27).

Aislinn Gwyneth of Cadbury. Name and device. Per pale argent and azure, a five-branched candlestick counterchanged.

Amanda Blacchester. Name only (see RETURNS for device).

Anastasia Kordula Argentea. Name only.

Audelindis de Rheims. Device. Per pale Or and purpure, two serpents, erect and respectant, tails entwined in base, counterchanged.

Bartholomew of Dartford. Name and device. Per bend Or and gules, a bow bendwise, fully drawn with an arrow bendwise sinister, all within a bordure counterchanged.

Bianca Rosamund di Firenza. Device. Azure, eight petals in annulo, bases to center, within a bordure argent.

Camilla de la Reynarde la Droitière. Name and device. Azure, a blonde mermaid proper, tailed argent, maintaining in each hand a garden rose gules, on a chief argent, three foxes passant gules.

Geoffrey Blaize. Name only.

James Ainsley. Name and device. Gules, a chevron inverted Or, overall an falcon, both within an orle of daisies argent. When this was registered in June, 1988, the bird was mistaken for an owl due to the depiction on the emblazon sheet.

Jocelyn Alewife. Name and device. Per bend sinister gules and sable, a tankard, handle to sinister, between three escallops argent.

Jófrídr Thorbjarnardóttir of the Westfjord. Name only.

Kateryne Cholmondeley. Name and device. Per pale sable and argent, on a chevron gules between two doves rising and respectant, wings elevated and addorsed, and a dove displayed counterchanged, three wheels Or.

Labhriunn de Ramsay. Name and device. Sable, a bend sinister wavy between an abacus fesswise and an armoured and fisted cubit arm palewise Or.

Matthew of Scarborough. Device. Argent, a drawn crossbow palewise between in saltire four crossbow quarrels palewise inverted, all within a bordure embattled sable.

Melisande de Brisbois. Name only.

Middle Kingdom. Change of badge for Award of the Doe's Grace. Azure, a sword proper enfiled of a wreath of flowers argent, slipped and leaved Or.

Seren Castell, Shire of. Device. Per fess embattled Or and sable, masoned Or, in pale a laurel wreath vert and a mullet Or.

Thais of Illiton. Device. Or, a peacock in its vanity proper, on a chief urdy azure, a mullet between a decrescent and an increscent argent.

Thorgerd Karlsdottir. Device. Argent, a Lacy knot saltirewise vert and in base a brown bear passant proper (Ursus arctus).

Tobias Alan MacKenzie. Name only.

Ursulina von Basel. Name only. Although the given name appears to be a diminutive form, the existence of a St. Ursulina in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century (Holweck, A Biographical Dictionary of the Saints, p. 1000) lends credence to the name's independent existence.

Varin of Rokkehealden. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Per pale gules and argent, a talbot's head erased between three crosses formy counterchanged. The submission was made under the name Varin the Grey.

KINGDOM OF THE WEST

Anne Fawnhaven. Device. Counter-ermine, on a chief indented argent, a stag's head sable between two edelweiss blossoms purpure.

Cyneburh of Cantwaraburg. Name only.

Daffyd MacRory. Name only. No doubt Brachet can explain to the submittor that the given name really is not pronounced the way he probably thinks it is.

Diane de la Croix. Device. Per bend sinister vert and sable, in bend two Celtic crosses Or.

Emrys of Windymeads. Holding name and device (see PENDING for name). Argent, two mallets in saltire, on a chief sable three quills palewise argent. The submission was made under the name Emrys Llewellyn. Note that permission to conflict was granted by Erik von Köln am Rhein ("Argent, two warhammers in saltire sable, on a chief triangular azure a cross crosslet argent."). Technically there is enough difference between the two devices due to the major and minor derived from the changes in line of division and tincture of the chief and the minor for number and type of tertiary charges, but there is no arguing that the two devices are close enough visually that the permission to conflict made everyone a little more comfortable.

Giles Leabrook. Name and device. Erminois, a saltire flory purpure.

Gunthar von Drachenschloss. Name and device. Quarterly, sable and gules, a dragon statant erect maintaining a flag bendwise, all within a bordure embattled Or.

Halima de la Luz. Name and device. Argent, a pale between in chief two triskeles sable, overall in base a flame gules.

Jade of Starfall. Badge. Vert, an ermine tail, spotted of three compass stars argent.

James the Unknown. Name only.

Kathrine of Bristol. Release of badge. Argent, a bear rampant to sinister bendy sinister sable and Or.

Lachlan Tadhg. Name and device. Gules, on a sun argent, a boar's head erased gules, on a base argent, a trefoil gules.

Miranda de Pinillos. Name and device. Argent, a lyre purpure within a bordure purpure, semy of roses argent.

Richard O'Ryan. Name and device. Purpure, a phoenix displayed Or, issuant from flames proper, and on a gore dexter Or, a rose proper.

Rowanna Nachteule. Name and device. Sable, a sword bendwise between two owls close Or.

West, Kingdom of the. Title for Aquarius Pursuivant. [There were a lot of irreverent comments from the "Sixties Remnant" on Laurel staff, but you really had to be there. . .]

West, Kingdom of the. Title for Goutte d'Eau Pursuivant.

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE RETURNED:

KINGDOM OF ANSTEORRA

Ansteorra, Kingdom of. Title for Odalisque Herald. There was a very strong consensus in the College that the meaning and associations of the term "odalisque" might cause offense both to the populace and those asked to bear it and generally rendered it inappropriate for use in the Society.

Caitrin O'Sullivan of Killarney Lake. Device. Argent, on a lozenge azure, a greatsword palewise argent, all within a bordure engrailed azure. Conflict with Kareina Talvi Tytar ("Azure vetu, a long-haired domestic cat dormant argent".): the difference between a lozenge and a lozenge throughout (which is what the vetu essentially is) is not sufficient to carry this clear.

Isabel Vyell MacLeod. Device. Per chevron throughout sable and argent, a brown bull's head cabossed proper and in chief two compass stars argent. Conflict with Brenna of Storvik ("Per chevron sable and argent, two mullets of eight points argent and a snake coiled as to strike vert.").

Maili Donnel MacGregor. Device. Per chevron azure and argent, ermined azure, in chief a pair of wings, displayed and inverted, argent. Conflict with Francois le Feroce ("Per chevron vert and argent, in chief two wings addorsed argent.").

Mairgreg nighean mhic Graeme. Name only. By the submittor's own documentation, "Graeme" is not a given name, but a surname of geographical origine derived from the Old English "grægham" (meaning "grey home"). As such it cannot be used with the patronymic particles. The submittor allowed only minor changes to her name and we felt that dropping half the name (i.e., "nighean mhic") amounted to more than a minor change.

Orric Longtooth. Device. Azure, a fess ermine between a ferret statant argent and a demi-sun issuant from base Or. Conflict with David of Dragon Run ("Azure, a fess ermine between a tipless broken sword proper and a mullet of four points argent.").

Regina Gunnvor Morgenstjerne. Device. Argent, ermined gules, a morningstar bendwise sinister sable. Conflict with the badge of Macsen Aelian y ffyrdig ("An annulet Or debruised by a morningstar bendwise sinister sable, hafted proper.").

Shadowlands, Shire of. Badge. Per pale azure and sable, issuant from the line of division a demi-compassstar and an annulet Or. While the "Grandfather Clause" allows the group to use the unusual conjoint charge from their arms, it does not protect it from conflict with existing armory. In this case, the removal of the laurel wreath brings this into conflict with Paul of Sunriver ("Azure, a compass star Or."). The appearance of dimidiation of Paul's arms with "Sable, an annulet Or." only emphasizes the problem.

KINGDOM OF ATENVELDT

Chrisogone Thomas of Portsmouth. Device. Plumetty gules and argent. Conflict with Cheveney ("Lozengy argent and gules.", Papworth, p. 972), Fitzcolum ("Lozengy gules and argent.", ibid.) and Ceba ("Plumetty argent and azure.", Woodward, p. 72).

Lyonel Oliver Grace. Badge for House Crymson Wyrm. An apple slipped and leaved vert. Although the name seemed acceptable, it must be returned with the badge which conflicts with the arms of Adelicia of Gilwell ("Sable, an apple argent.") as well as the cited badge of Mela de Prion ("An apple vert, winged argent.").

Sean Kirkpatrick. Device. Azure, a demi-pegasus salient argent, overall a chevron inverted Or, goutte de sang. Withdrawn at request of Aten Principal Herald.

Stephen Kazamiri. Name and device. Per pale azure and argent, a double-bitted battle axe between two harps addorsed counterchanged. This form of the surname could not be documented. Documented forms from Russian would include "Kazimircik" and "Kazimirov", while Polish would allow "Kasimierz". The device falls afoul of AR6d ("A Long skinny charge shall not be counterchanged along its major axis."): even with the axehead, the counterchange of the handle unacceptably reduces the identifiability of the charge.

Tadhg Ambros O hUigin. Name only. The name is in conflict with that of Tadhg Dall O hUiginn, a noted Irish poet of the Elizabethan period who is not infrequently cited not only as a poet but also as a source of biographical and other information on the great Irish lords of the sixteenth century, since he wrote encomiastic verse on most of them. Even outside Irish literary circles he is hardly obscure, since the Penguin Companion to Literature devotes two-thirds of a column to him, rather more than is devoted to John Evelyn or Sean O'Faolain! Unfortunately, we cannot simply drop the given name since this name also runs into difficulties with that of Ambrose O'Higgins, the Irish mercenary who himself played such a significant part in the early modern history of Chile and Peru and was the father of the even more famous Bernardo O'Higgins.

Tristan Gryphonroke. Device. Per pall inverted vert, azure and sable, a pall of chain inverted between two gryphons combattant and a tower argent. There was a considerable feeling in the College that the cumulative anomalies in this letter amounted to non-period style: three low-contrast tinctures in the field, a pall of chain which is nearly identifiable and was felt by many to be tantamount to "thin line heraldry" and the use of the gryphons combattant whose differences of position require the processing of all three charges around the chain as different "items".

KINGDOM OF ATLANTIA

Attilium, Stronghold of. Change of designation from Canton. Withdrawn at request of Triton Principal Herald.

Aubrey Gawen. Name and device. Azure, a cross moline throughout Or, overall a falcon's head, couped and sinister facing, argent. In view of the obscuring of the underlying cross there is no doubt there is a conflict with the badge of John the Rhymer ("Azure, a falcon's head couped reversed argent."). Technically, there is also a conflict with Braham ("Azure, a cross moline Or.").

Barbara of Cambion. Name and device. Argent, a cross bow palewise between three crossbow quarrels palewise inverted, one and three, all within a bordure embattled sable. By a perverse trick of fate, this was submitted later in the same month as the almost identical device of Matthew of Scarborough, registered elsewhere on this letter: "Argent, a drawn crossbow palewise between in saltire four crossbow quarrels palewise inverted, all within a bordure embattled sable." These are so close that this could not be registered even with permission to conflict from Matthew.

Doran Campbell. Device. Gyronny Or and sable, a bend sinister gules, overall a boar's head erased argent. We had to agree with Crescent that uniting the boar's head badge of the Campbell chiefs with their arms was overly presumptuous when taken into the context of the use of the Campbell surname (albeit the intent of the submittor in honoring Campbell forbears may have been laudable).

Heinrich von Kreiner. Name for House Zwergberg. As Vesper has pointed out, the literal meaning of the name is "Dwarf Mountain". Taken in conjunction with the golden hammers under the hill, we felt this was a bit umm. . . non-humanish?

John Burgolyn de Lakinghei. Name and device. Or, a chevron, in chief a label azure, crusilly fitchy Or. Documentation is required for these spellings of the family name and place name: none was provided and the College could not provide them. There was a strong consensus in the College that the device really does conflict with that of Bastard ("Or, a chevron azure."): here the sole distinguishing mark is the addition of a label. Even if one considers that label as separately charged, so closely is that sort of charging tied to the original cadency that we have to consider this insufficiently differenced.

KINGDOM OF CAID

Ceallach Macrae. Device. Argent, a fret vert, fretted with a sword palewise sable. Conflict with Cearach ni Rúadhágan ("Argent, on a fret vert a rose gules, barbed and seeded Or.").

Elasia O'Toole. Name only. The submittor proposed the given name as a constructed feminine variant of "Elijah". While it cannot be documented as such a variant, it would be acceptable as a constructed name were it not for the fact that it is also a common noun in Greek. This form is used in Xenophon and other writers to indicate the act of riding, particularly a long ride or "march" (presumably from the action of the horses' hooves striking the ground). It is also a standard term used by the glossators to describe the striking of an impression from a die (as in coinage). We would suggest a similar sounding documented form such as "Alesia" (from "Alice") or "Elwisia" (from "Helewise" or "Eloise").

Guinevere of Wulfhold. Device. Sable, a wolf passant within a bordure embattled argent. After a comparison of the proposed device with that of Ulfr Byrnsmidr ("Vert, a winged wolf passant, wings inverted and addorsed, within a bordure embattled argent."), there is no doubt that the two devices conflict visually. Even if the addition of wings were to be considered worth a major point of difference in all cases (and we are by no means convinced that this is so), the visual echo here is overwhelming. Since the wings on Ulfr's device are inverted, they lie almost entirely in the space already occupied by the body of the beast and their visual weight is diminished to near invisibility. Indeed, as the two beasts are in essentially the same position, were it not for the curve of the top of the wings, which would give Ulfr's wolf a "hunchback" were it drawn in outline, it could be argued that the two emblazons conflict by outline. This being so, the bulk of the difference is derived from the tincture of the field and that simply is not adequate to differentiate the two devices.

Maelen Gwynonwy of Ravensfield. Device. Azure, a unicorn's head erased argent within an orle of escallops Or. Conflict with Goston ("Azure, a unicorn's head erased argent, armed and gorged with a ducal coronet Or.", as cited in Papworth, p. 913).

KINGDOM OF MERIDIES

Christiana MacGrain. Badge for Domus Comitas. Sable, in pale a mask of comedy and a goblet Or. The badge conflicts with the device of Hal of the Mask ("Sable, a tragic mask Or, featured sable."). The proposed name for the household is not grammatical (the correct medieval Latin would be "Domus Comitatis") and there is considerable doubt as to its appropriateness as a household name, if it is spelled correctly. While the meaning is technically that given by the submittors, the almost identical "Domus Comitatus" would refer to the house of the royal "comitatus", the personal retinue of the early medieval kings that led to the feudal order. Though the two terms are distinct, they are perilously close in in sound (and are derived from the same root meaning of good fellowship). . .

Shadek of Stardstind. Name and device. Sable, a dragon's head and on a chief triangular argent, an hourglass gules. Granted that the submittor is studying Slavonic languages, he has not demonstrated that the compounds he presents here are actually consonant with naming practise in early Slavonic or period Danish which are the roots from which he attempts to derive the forms. It is indeed necessary to demonstrate the validity of the given name in particular since it is a documented geographical name (a town in Poland near Lodz). While the submittor has a number of interesting and valid things to say about the cultural mix involved in the creation of the early Russian culture, he has not proved his linguistic case here. Since the submittor allowed no changes whatsoever to his name, the submission as a whole had to be returned.

KINGDOM OF THE MIDDLE

Amanda Blacchester. Device. Argent, semy of trefoils slipped vert, a swan statant close sable. Conflict with Irving de Rosamonde MacChlurain ("Ermine, a swan elevated and displayed, dismembered sable, collared Or, holding in its beak a thistle proper."): the visual effect of the trefoils and ermine spots is so close that at most a minor point of difference can be derived from the change and the visual echo is strong. Several commentors also adduced Brianna the Black Swan ("Bendy sinister wavy of ten gules and Or, a swan naiant sable."). This is not only visually but technically clear: there is a major point for the difference in tinctures of the field and, under the current rules (DoD A4c), the semy is treated as the addition of charges and so counts as another major point of difference in addition to the difference in posture between close and naiant which traditionally would count as at least equivalent to a minor point of difference.

Varin the Grey. Name only. By the submittor's own documentation, this name is identical to "Warin" so we must consider the submitted form of the name in conflict with Warin de Grey, one of the leading characters in the Derenyi novels. While a reasonable case might be made for the adoption and general use of a "slave name" from "Varianus" (meaning "of or belonging to a member of the gens Vara) in the same manner that "Julian" came from "Julianus", it is necessary to prove that this actually happened since the form "varianus" is also a common adjective in Latin meaning "varicoloured" or "pied". Indeed, when used with the desired byname (leaving aside questions of conflict), the result is a fine example of oxymoron as the submittor would at once be varicoloured and grey!

KINGDOM OF THE WEST

None.

THE FOLLOWING SUBMISSIONS ARE PENDED:

KINGDOM OF AN TIR

Eric of Clan Smith. Name only. This was pended in July to await permission to conflict which was ostensibly forthcoming from the owner of "House Smith". As this has not materialized, we are formally pending this to the March meeting at which time it will be either passed or returned.

KINGDOM OF CAID

James of Amberwood. Name only. As the issues associated with this name involve the greater question of the degree of protection of household names, this name is pended until the March meeting so that the results of the poll of the populace may be fully incorporated into the final policy ruling.

KINGDOM OF THE EAST

Celyn ap Llewelyn. Name only. As with several other pending submissions, the issues here transcend the individual submission so that we felt it appropriate to pend the name until the March meeting. Our apologies to the submittor who has waited quite some time, but we felt it would be fairer to him not to take immediate action on this issue in view of the length (and heat) of the discussion.

KINGDOM OF THE MIDDLE

Patri ibn Cariadoc. Name only. As we have been informed of further documentation that is en route we have pended this appeal further to the March meeting.

KINGDOM OF THE WEST

Emrys Llewellyn. Name only. As with the name of James of Amberwood above, the issues here transcend the individual submission so that we felt it appropriate to pend the name until the March meeting.

Wolfram the Smith. Name only. This was pended in July to await permission to conflict which was ostensibly forthcoming from the owner of "House Smith". As this has not materialized, we are formally pending this to the March meeting at which time it will be either passed or returned.
