December 1990

Unto the members of the College of Arms does Da'ud ibn Auda, Laurel King of Arms send Greetings!;

My Lords and Ladies,

Herein are corrections to various Letters of Acceptances and Returns. If you know of any others which have not yet been corrected, please let me know.

Corrections to the November 1990 LoAR

ATENVELDT

Margaret Blakesley. Device. Bendy of four argent and vert, a leopard's head jessant-de-lys counterchanged.

This was accidentally listed in the "Acceptances" as well as "Returns". The device was returned for the reasons given in "Returns".

One Thousand Eyes, Barony of. Name for Order of the Reflection of the Dream of One Thousand Eyes.
No reason was given for the return of this name. [And no, I do not return things for no reason at all!] It was the unanimous consensus of the commentary that this name was just not period style, even by the relatively loose standards by which that is judged in the Society.

Stephan Ealdric. Name and device. Quarterly sable and azure, a horse's head couped between in fess two garden roses slipped argent.
(Rather than the published "between two in fess ....")

EAST

Both Aceline Barrett of Seven Oaks and Elspeth Keyf of Neddingham's badges should have had the notation "[Fieldless]" in front of the blazons on the LoAR.

Catriona Mairghread nic Dhuibh of Moray. Device. Argent, a phoenix azure rising from flames proper and on a chief invected azure a pair of scissors argent.

The phoenix is indeed rising, not risin.

Eírikr Skalla-Bjornsson. Name.
The LoAR accidentally left off the accent mark in Eírikr and the second "l" out of Skalla.

MERIDIES

Eric Alard. The notation under "Returns" that both the name and device were returned is in error. The name was registered as noted in the "Acceptances" section.

Corrections to the October 1990 LoAR

ATENVELDT

Aelfred vom Silverwald. Device.

This was accidentally listed under both Acceptances and Returns. It was returned for the reasons noted in that section.

Blaunche de Bayard. Name and device. Azure, a seahorse erect to sinister Or and three wolves' teeth issuant from sinister argent.
The tincture of the seahorse was accidentally left out of the blazon.

Sean MacAoidh an Slaoightire. Name and device.
The LoAR accidentally dropped the first "i" from the byname.

MERIDIES

Kevin Devin O'Quine. Device.

The cats should have been blazoned as "salient".

MIDDLE

Guillaume di San Marino. Device.

His name was accidentally misspelled on the LoAR as Guillaume de San Marino.

Rainulf of Melfi. Name.
Although the name appeared on the LoI and LoAR as Rainulf of Malfi, the actual name of the town as documented is Melfi.

Siobhan an Daraich Crom. Device.
The name was mistakenly given as Siobhan an Dair Crom on the LoAR. It was registered in the correct form, above, on the August 1990 LoAR.

Vaclav Semjaka. Device. Azure, a bear rampant and on a gore argent a mullet of three points gules.
The LoAR accidentally dropped the tincture of the mullet.

TRIMARIS

Hartmann von Murrhardt. Name and device. Vert, a demi-hart Or issuant from a base barry wavy Or and vert, within a bordure ermine.

The demi-hart here is actually Or, not the barry wavy Or and vert the blazon in the LoAR implied.

Note to Lady Elmet:

Thanks for your catching those corrections. For those which you noted that I did not mention in the Errata letter enclosed:

ATENVELDT

Guillaume de Marris - Lady Aten noted in a letter of response to comments that the "u" was on the forms but had been accidentally dropped from the LoI, so I did not feel it necessary to point that out again.

CAID

Deirdre Buadhachán - The "c" on the LoI was a typo.

EAST

Bridget Greywolf of Kayell - The hyphen appeared to be a post-period intrusion and was dropped.

MERIDIES

Amos al-Musa - It was between K and M due to an error on my part. We were originally going to return the name and form a holding name (under Kevin), and then double-checked the forms and found that the submitter would allow minor changes. But I forgot to move the text after changing it in the document on the PC.

Michael Bohun - Bohyn was a typo on the LoI.

College of Saint Cassian - Versus the conflict you called, Benton (Azure, a bend argent), we saw a CVD for fieldlessness and another for stylus vs. bend.

TRIMARIS

Ciedrych ap Gryffyd ap Cynan o'r Wyddea - His device was registered under the holding name of Ilan of Mathom Trove.

Notes to Lord Morsulus:

Thanks for your notes on the November LoAR. I'll try to tighten up on my proofreading and double-checking of some items. To respond to your comments:

1.Yeah, I'll try to keep the word "Incipient" out of the LoARs. (It comes from typing up the basic document directly from the LoIs and then forgetting to change some of the items.

2.Thomas McKinnon. No, this was a first-time device submission. Tadhg gives me LoIs on diskette, and I don't always catch the "new" in "new name/device/badge" and delete. Sorry.

3.Adrienne de la Montagne ("fleys-de-lys"). Yeah, one of these days I'm going to have to learn how to type, that's all there is to it.

5.Margaret Blakesley. As I note in the Errata letter in this packet, her device (yeah, bendy and leopard's head) was returned. I think I've caught all the double-entry Acceptances/Returns and eliminated them from the December LoAR, and I'll try to double- and triple-check future LoARs.

6.Aceline Barrett of Seven Oaks and Elspeth Keyf of Neddingham. Yeah, both should have [Fieldless] in front of them. (Arval sends his LoIs on diskette, too, and I didn't catch these. Sorry!)

7.Avril Boulle and Maurya Etain Sableswan. You're right, I didn't make those very clear, did I? I'll try to be more specific on changes, transfers, etc. in the future. Sorry about that.

8.Elrik Skap-Vargr. The call for discussion of fieldless badges vis-a-vis the "self-contained design" notation of VIII.5 was to determine if the College feels whether all fieldless badges with disconnected charges should be banned, or if disconnected charges with a common "theme" were allowable. In Elrik's case, there were disconnected charges which were not thematically connected, and I honestly felt that it was not in keeping with VIII.5 as it already stands. (Similar to the return of the Outlands Equestrian Guild's badge in October.) I agree, I think it is wrong to change the rules to return a submission, but I believe that what I did here was to apply the standard of VIII.5 as written.

Personally, I hope that the College decides that disconnected charges are inappropriate on fieldless badges, if only because it will be easier to administer than trying to decide if a group of disconnected charges have a unifying "theme" or not.

It's been cold here, but I've had no problems with freezing pipes or anything like that so far, and probably won't. (The cats were not at all happy about the snow in the back yard, though. Having been raised in Las Vegas, neither one of them had ever seen the stuff before, and the leaps that one of them made just to keep his feet out of the stuff were amusing in the extreme.)

Again, thanks for your comments and concerns. It's always nice to have someone reliable for periodic "reality checks". Thank you.
