ROSTER CHANGES AND CORRECTIONS

Of course, the minute I send out a new Roster, changes have to be made.

Morsulus has informed me that I have his name wrong on the Roster, having inadvertently dropped an "e" somewhere along the line. His name should properly be Iulstan Sigewealding.

Ansteorra has a new Star Principal Herald. He is Arenvald Kief av Kiersted (Lee Cockerham), P.O. Box 6126, Huntsville, TX 77342; (409) 291-3449. Please place him on the roster and mailing list in the stead of Richard Silverdawn.

ON THE PROPOSAL TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF NON-SCA ARMORIAL BEARINGS WHICH THE CoA WILL CONTINUE TO PROTECT (or, On the Modest Proposal)

Enclosed with this LoAR is an initial listing of suggested non-SCA armory which the CoA should consider continuing to protect, along with a cover letter with explanatory notes from Palimpsest. As he notes, the list is not complete. (I myself found what I believe to be a typo. If I remember correctly, the Russian eagle is sable.) There are a number of arms which will probably need to be added to the list. Please tell us which ones you think should be, as well as why they should be. (As a few examples to stimulate thinking, research, and discussion: The (attributed) arms of God are included. Should we also protect the (attributed) arms of Jesus? How about Uther Pendragon? Arthur? How about Batman (Or, a reremouse sable)? Anything from Tolkien? Mercedes Lackey?) There are some arms on this list which probably do not need to be. Please tell us which ones you think they are, as well as why they need not be on this list.

THE ALTERNATE TITLES LIST

Also enclosed with this LoAR is the most recent revision of the Alternate Titles List, updated and revised since the last printing of about a year ago, along with some explanatory information. I had hoped to have this published in the October issue of Tournaments Illuminated, but space considerations there have limited what can be printed. As a consequence, the Editor told me she would try to print the introductory and explanatory material that I sent her with the list, and then would include something along the lines of "The full Alternate Titles List is available from your kingdom heralds and from Free Trumpet Press West" and include FTPW's address. As a consequence, I recommend that you all keep a master copy of the List available to make distribution copies for individuals who request one.

MISCELLANY

The blazon of the arms of the Dukes of Brittany is Ermine plain and includes the motto Patius mori quam foedari -sooner death than to be sullied. The tradition goes that the Duchess Anne one day saw an ermine, run to earth by the hunters, allowing itself to die rather than cross a muddy puddle so that its white fur would not be dirtied.

Translated from a post card purchased in Brittany and published in The Pursuivant, "A Newsletter for Young Members of The Heraldry Society", found in The Heraldry Gazette, June 1994, p. iii

Until next month, I remain, as ever,

Your faithful servant,

Da'ud ibn Auda
