February 24, 1995

Unto the members of the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive does Shayk Da'ud ibn Auda, Laurel King of Arms, send Greetings!

The February 1995 Laurel meeting was held on Saturday, February 18, 1995, and considered the following Letters of Intent: East (10/1), Ansteorra (dated September but mailed 10/7), An Tir (10/13), Atlantia (10/16), Middle (10/16), Outlands (10/20), West (10/26), and Meridies (10/28). The Letter of Intent from Calontir (10/22) was considered at a "roadshow" meeting held in Meridies on February 11. Original commentary on these LoIs should have been in the College's hands no later than December 31, 1994. Responses and rebuttals to commentary should have been in the College's hands no later than January 31, 1995.

The March 1995 meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 1995 (please note the new date), and will consider the following Letters of Intent: Atenveldt (dated 10/20, but mailed 11/1), Drachenwald (undated, but mailed 11/1), Ansteorra (11/5), Middle (11/6), Caid (11/7), Atlantia (11/11), West (11/14), An Tir (11/18), East (11/20), Caid (11/21), Outlands (11/28), and Drachenwald (11/29). Original commentary on these LoIs should have been in the College's hands no later than January 31, 1995. Responses and rebuttals to commentary must have been in the College's hands no later than February 28, 1995.

The April 1995 meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 15, 1995, and will consider the following Letters of Intent: West (12/8); Middle (12/9); Atlantia (12/12); An Tir (12/16); Trimaris (12/20); Outlands (12/20); and Caid (12/21). One LoI will be considered at a "roadshow" meeting in Ealdormere on April 22. Original commentary on these LoIs must have been in the College's hands no later than February 28, 1995. Responses and rebuttals to commentary must be in the College's hands no later than March 31, 1995.

The May 1995 Laurel meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 1995, and will consider the following Letters of Intent: East (1/4); Meridies (1/12); An Tir (1/14); Caid (1/20); Atlantia (1/22); Drachenwald Letter of Intent to Protect (1/26); West (1/28); and Outlands (1/28). Original commentary on these LoIs must be in the College's hands no later than March 31, 1995. Responses and rebuttals to commentary must be in the College's hands no later than April 30, 1995.

Not all Letters of Intent may be considered when they are originally scheduled on this Cover Letter. Date of mailing of the LoI, date of receipt of the Laurel packet, or other factors may delay consideration of certain Letters of Intent. Additionally, not all Letters of Intent received have been scheduled because the administrative requirements (receipt of the forms packet, receipt of the necessary fees, etc.) have not yet been met.

ROSTER CHANGES AND CORRECTIONS

It is with the utmost regret that we accept the resignation from the College of Laurel Staff member Green Anchor Herald, Gawaine of Miskbridge. His many years of commentary are deeply appreciated, and we will miss his voice of moderation and his insightful discussions of the many issues the College faces. [We will also miss his incisive "zingers". Laurel's personal favorite was a comment from some years back which contained no words at all, but consisted of only an emblazon. A submission of two rampant rabbits in fess and a chief had been redrawn so that the rabbits were each holding a top hat and cane!] Please remove Master Gawaine from the Roster and mailing list.

We also accept with regret the resignation of Green Crown Herald for the West Kingdom, Owen ap Morgan. Please remove him from the Roster and mailing list.

In some of the Roster changes last month, I apparently didn't get straight all of the information I needed. The new Badger Herald (East Kingdom) will not be commenting at this time; please do not add him to the mailing list. The former Badger Herald, now Silver Crescent, should be retained on the mailing list. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone (especially Badger, who may wonder why he's receiving all these letters!).

Owing to an attack of real life, Trefoil Herald (Outlands) has asked to take a leave from commentary for a few months. Please remove her from the mailing list (though she should be retained on the Roster).

Vesper asks that you add to the Roster and the mailing list Leveret Pursuivant, Harold von Rheinfelden (Kevin Ellingson), 7646 Windbridge Drive, Apt. 173, Sacramento, CA 95831.

Schwarzdrachen asks that you remove Albion Herald, Lindorm Eriksson, from the roster and mailing list. He has not been able to comment due to an unexpected rise in mundane work-load. In his stead, Schwarzdrachen asks that you add to the roster and mailing list as Pursuivant-at-Large: Pietari Pentinponka Uv (Antti Leino), Estnäsg. 10 D 23, FIN-00170 Helsingfors, FINLAND.

Enclosed with this LoAR is the most recent printout of the Roster, encompassing all of the above changes. Please review it carefully and update your mailing lists.

The enclosed Roster also contains something new. Where I knew or could easily find them, I have added members' e-mail addresses. If you are on the Roster and have an e-mail address you would like added, please let me know. If I have an e-mail address on here for you which either is incorrect or which you would prefer not be published, please get in touch with me.

HELP WANTED

With the resignation of Green Crown, Laurel finds himself in need of a volunteer to compile the precedents the remainder of this tenure, from July 1994 through until my warrant expires. If you would like to volunteer, or think you might be interested but have some questions, please contact me directly by letter, phone, or e-mail. I would like to get someone involved in this project within the next month or so, as we are already running a bit behind.

MISCELLANEA

Accompanying this LoAR you will find several flyers.

One is the most recent Free Trumpet Press West price list, including the 15th Update to the Armorial and Ordinary. You are encouraged to copy and distribute this price list to anyone who might be interested in any of the works distributed by FTPW.

A second is a flyer advertising the Midrealm Heraldic Symposium to be held in Ealdormere (specifically, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) on April 22, 1995.

Third is information regarding Herald's Point at Pennsic this coming August. If you will be attending Pennsic and desire to camp at Herald's Point (or even if you will not be camping there but are willing to help out), this will be of importance to you.

I have also been asked to pass on to you the availability of a new pamphlet entitled An Heraldic Court Companion compiled by Enoch Crandal macCranon, intended as a primer for court heralds. It is available for $1.00 from Peter C. Polk, 300 East Ash Lane, #1526, Euless, TX 76039-2431; (817) 545-8007; cranon@aol.com.

MISCELLANY

In a letter published in the March 1994 Heraldry Gazette, Dr. Bernard Juby refers to the `bogus' arms being used by Hospital Plan Insurance Services.

This statement is incorrect. The arms were granted by the Kings of Arms on the 20th August 1974 to Mr. Ernest Brett of Baker Street, one of the Directors. The achievement was designed by Mr. Patric Dickinson then working in Dr. Swan's office.

Dr. Juby's comments:

"Since a limited company is a separate entity in law then a coat of arms granted to one of the directors does not automatically entitle the company to use those arms. Only if the unincorporated business is run by and called after the armigerous owner can this be so. Otherwise, to take the case of an individual armigerous director with several directorships in various companies, there would be many companies all bearing the same arms - the very antithesis of heraldry. What happens when more than one director in the same company is armigerous? They'll be quartering them next!

Correction, from The Heraldry Gazette, September 1994, p. 9

Until next month, I remain, as ever,

Your faithful servant,

Da'ud ibn Auda

Laurel King of Arms
