THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN REGISTERED (NOT!):
EASTERN LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1989
Rufus Russel Reid. Name and device. Gules, ghouls gules.
Though arguably color on color, the semy charges are as identifiable here as they are in real
life.
GOUTTE STRANGE LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1993
Godid Hurt. Name change from Throgrim the Brained and device change. Or
hurty.
His currently registered device, Azure mullety Or, two arms chevronwise issuant from the sides of
the shield, in chief a club inverted bendwise sinister and in base a man's head couped affronty all
proper, atop the head a molehill gules fimbriated argent, is released. It is arguable whether the
new device is an improvement or not.
TRIFFID LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1993
Jacques Potte. Name and device. Sable, in fess three billets each charged with a
mullet gules.
Despite its overall appearance, Laurelin Hardy can find no way to make the guidelines of RfS
VIII.1.a. call this "slot machine" heraldry.
BEST KINGDOM LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1994
Tydi Bowles. Name and device. Argent, a gurges azure overall a currach sable.
Originally Laurelin Hardy wanted to just flush this one, but after letting it sit for awhile,
everything around it appeared so clean and spotless that it was felt that the Society might be better
for its registration.
LAURELIN HARDY LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1996
East, People's Democratic Kingdom of the. Name and device. Purpure, in saltire a
hammer and sickle within a laurel wreath, in chief a crown Or.
Submitted as People's Democratic Republic of the East, there is no such standard (or recognized
alternate) designator as "republic". We have therefore substituted the standard designator with the
permission of the Brigant-ya Unprincipled Commissar of Arms.
The Letter of Intent had the crown in chief blazoned as a "commoner's crown". However,
the only documentation for such a crown was a Steeleye Span album cover, which is post-period.
(While records of a number of types exist in period, record covers are a relatively recent
innovation.) Additionally, the semy of people on the crown was unrecognizable. We have
reblazoned it simply as a crown, and they may diaper it as they wish.
Frostij the Snow Man. [Device] Azure semy of snowflakes argent, a shovel Or.
While the blazon recommended in the LoI (Azure, flurry counter-flurry) could be argued as being
briefer while still reproducing the emblazon, it is also true that it sounds identical to the blazon
Fleury counter-fleury (which is probably best reblazoned as Azure semy-de-lis, in pale three lions
passant guardant Or). Because we thus cannot guarantee the reproducibility of this emblazon from
the shorter blazon, we are taking the safest route by using the longer blazon.
Rode Runner. [Device] Or, on a pile inverted sable between two tridents vert four
billets in pale Or.
Please ask him to draw the billets a little wider in the future. As it is, they are so narrow that they
appear as a broken line down the center of the pile.
THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN RETURNED (NOT!):
MYRTHIA LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1995
Anna Jizer. Badge. [Fieldless] A plate fimbriated sable sustained by a coney sejant
erect guardant gules masked sable.
Conflict with David Crockett, badge for Ol' Betsy, A raccoon sejant erect gules, masked sable.
Though blazoned as sustained in the LoI, the plate is really only the equivalent of a maintained
charge and thus does not count for difference. There is also no CD for type between the two
rodents.
Bruce of Willis. Device. Argent, a demi-moor indecent proper.
There does not appear to be a single "proper" for a demi-moor (as a review of a number of movies
over the past several years has adequately demonstrated). As a consequence, we are having to
return this.
James Kirk. Badge. [Fieldless] A star sheep in her pride proper.
As emblazoned, the star sheep cannot be "proper"; as only one instance, there is no pink, frilly bow
tied around the tail. We are therefore forced to return this for redrawing, or reconsideration, or
something.
Lorayna Bobbit. Name and device. Or semy of leaves vert, a cock's head couped
purpure.
As noted in the LoI, there was no documentation for the name. Laurelin Hardy has checked in a
previously unknown names book by Alfred J. Kolatch and has found it there only as a modern
name from an extinct tribal group in the Gulag Archipelago. As such, the given is entirely
incompatible with the surname, which is a fine Middle English name.
Unfortunately, there is no standard depiction of a chicken coop. As a consequence, the
primary charge is unidentifiable by itself, without the remainder of the body from which it was
severed. If it can be found and reattached, it is possible that it may be registrable at some time in
the future (after the blue laws so prevalent in many parts of the country have been
repealed).
TURNIP, HAROLD & CO. LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRILLUS AS -1
Hurn the Hunted. Name and device. Treebark, on a plate a turkey surpr¡s tenne
surmounted by a fillet cross crosslet sable.
While Turnip's argument that Hunter and Hunted are about as opposite as you can get from each
other, it is often noted in history and in modern apocryphal stories that the hunted often becomes
the hunter. As a consequence, this does indeed conflict with Hurn the Hunter.
The treebark may be more concisely (and accurately) blazoned as the fur it is: treefur.
(See A Guide to Outlandish Heraldry, which also has examples of abbott's fur.) As there is no way
to decently blazon the words around the edge of the plate ("Target Acquired; Zeiss Optik"), we are
forced to return this under RfS VIII.6.H.1.a.iii. fn. 4. Sorry.
Natan de Bumpeaux. Badge. [Fieldless] A deer slug proper.
Unfortunately, this submission was sitting on the top of the stack on the table while we were salting
our steak, and some of the salt got on it. It is now an unrecognizable lump (a lump dormant
proper?), and is being returned for that reason.
Ren van Hök. Name and device. Sable, on a bezant semy of ogresses a clarion
gules.
We are having to return the name under the "claims of superhuman status", since the byname
indicates that he is a bacillus (of a particularly nasty and virulent type, I might add). We need a
birth certificate or a list of references from people he has infected and killed before we can register
this name to him.
Unfortunately, by the time the submission reached us, the ogresses had so multiplied that
the bezant had become a pellet, making the clarion color on color. You might suggest to him that
he try penicillin or one of its derivatives next time.
Sviatoslav the Sodden. Name and device. Azure, three garbs bendwise sinister
inverted Or and in sinister chief a zephyr proper.
The parts of the name do not match in gender. The given is masculine, "the Sodden" (a term from
one of the lesser dialects of Lower Slobbovia), is feminine. We would have modified one to match
the other (Sviatoslavova the Sodden to Sviatoslav the Sod), but the submitter allowed no changes
whatsoever.
Though sent via Express Mail, by the time this submission reached us, the only charge left
on the field was the zephyr, which had moved to the center of the field and taken on a funnel
cloud shape. As a consequence, this is an exact conflict with Harvey the Harried, Azure, a pile
argent.
Wildlimburgenshanze, Shire of. Name and device. Rot, ein Laurel Ringe gespringt
ssable dar untien ein Limburgekäse verstinken korekt!
This submission was apparently lost in the mail, as nothing but a faint ordure reached us (and that
was enough for us!)
Auto Mechanik. Name.
As noted in the LoI, this had been returned by Master Wilhelm von Schlüsel for redrawing.
A comparison of the emblazons in the files demonstrated that this is exactly the same form as was
returned then. (And he thought we wouldn't look in the files! For shame.)
KRAKPOT HERALD LETTER OF INTENT OF -e-iã APRIL 1995
Carmen of Miranda. Badge. Or, a rose proper between to dexter two roundels in pale
and to sinister an increscent sable.
Conflict with the device of Smile E. Face, Or, a rose proper between in chief two roundels and in
base a crescent sable. There is only one CD, for rotating the entire device 90ø
counterclockwise.
BATTY HERALD
Surrender Earthling. Name and device. Sable mullety, standing atop a mount a
Spartan maintaining a pennon Or.
The justification for the given (as a Puritan formation, from "Surrender Your Soul to Providence
and Your Sins Shall Be Forgiven" is far too late to go with the occupational byname Earthling.
Earthlings only came into existence in extremely early period (just post-Jurassic, actually), and the
temporal gap here is too large to ignore.
The device conflicts with the arms of Surrender Ordye, Sable mullety argent, standing atop
a mount an Athenian maintaining a pennon Or. There is only one CD, for the change to the
tincture of the stars. There is nothing for the difference between a Spartan and an Athenian; they
are all Greeks to me.
LAURELIN HARDY LETTER OF INTENT OF 1 APRIL 1996
Dawn Under. Device. Or, on a cross barby gules five shrimp argent paly sable.
The device conflicts, by the "prior use" law, with a widely broadcast commercial by the Australian
Tourist Board (a post-period body, admittedly) which prominently features "shrimp on the
barbie".
