Electronic Commentary

I want to thank all the members of the College of Arms who are sending me their commentary electronically (either by e-mail or on disk). It cuts down on my work load considerably. On the other hand, I would like to point out to those commenters who do not, this means that your work is either scanned or retyped and errors do creep in. Therefore, if you are concerned about your commentary being read by me as you wrote it, you should send it to me electronically, since I rarely read the paper copies, but work directly from the collated commentary. This can be especially important when issues are before the College.

Scanning Project - forms/permission

As we have mentioned before, we have a team working on scanning all the registered armory in order to make back-up copies of the files and to hopefully make a CD. However, some legal issues have been brought to my attention regarding ownership of the artwork. We are discussing this matter with lawyers, and we will be updating you on this matter as soon as possible. However, one thing is certain: some sort of disclaimer will have to be put on to all armory forms. Furthermore, it is clear to us that many kingdoms are using forms for their name submissions that are confusing and do not contain sufficient information for our use. Finally, we have received a number of requests for downloadable submissions forms from the Laurel Webpage.

Therefore, we are partially biting the bullet that has been discussed by both Master Da'ud and Master Bruce as Laurel. Over the next couple of months we will be discussing a standardized form which will be SCA legal through-out the Known World, as well as what information may and may not be on forms. As a first step, we are requiring every kingdom to send me a complete set of blank submission forms (name, device, badge, group, etc.) for your kingdom, with the parts that you feel necessary to your kingdom on the form highlighted. In other words, it is obvious that name, address, phone number, etc. be on the forms. But, some kingdoms may have kingdom specific information. If you have any doubts, highlight that part.

Books of note :

Hans Bahlow's Deutsches Namenlexicon, is available in the states in an English translation. The new title is Dictionary of German Names. It is from the Max Kade Institute of German-American Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison. ISBN 0-924119-35-7. The cost, for this hard-back book, is $22.50.

I recent ordered a book from Heraldry Today in England on the Order of Santiago. The description in their catalogue reads:
478. MENEDEZ PIDAL DE NAVASCUES, F. CABALLERIA MEDIEVAL BURGALESA. EL LIBRO DE LA CONFRADIA DE SANTIAGO. Madrid 1996. Royal 4to. 222pp. 113 marvelous full page colour plates from an early manuscript with 311 equestrian figures carrying shields & an armorial of them. Dec. card covers. £45.00

They also inform me that Gerald Brault's Early Blazon is expected to be out this summer in an updated re-issue for circa £40.

Known World 1997

Let me remind everyone about this year's Known World Heralds and Scribes Symposium, June 21-22, 1997 in the Barony of Thescorre. I urge everyone to attend.

Miscellany

It was decided to raise the cut-off date for the period approved by the College from 1450 to 1485, the date of the end of the Plantagenet line in England considered as marking the end of the Middle Ages in that country. COHW/COA 1 January 71, p. 1

Until next month, pray believe that I am, and remain,

Your faithful servant,

Jaelle of Armida
Laurel Queen of Arms
