ATLANTIA

Andrew Grey of Blakehethe. Name change from Ciaran mac Ghabhann.

The name was submitted as Andrew Grey of Blackheath, but he requested an authentic form for 1405 England. The spelling Blakehethe seems to be the typical form for around 1400; Blakeheath is plausible, if less likely.

Astasia de Moncellis. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Bedivere de Byron. Name and device. Azure, a serpent entwined around a trident palewise Or.

Current precedent is to accept the names of significant characters from period Arthurian literature as there is a pattern of such names being used in England and France in period.

Briana Morgan of the Valley. Device change. Or, a fess bretessed between a harp vert and a lion couchant pean.

The fess in this submission resembles the fess used by her husband Gavin MacFergus in his device. At that time his device was registered he was told that the fess should have a least three embrasures. A number of commenters felt that as this device has the same artistic problem as the previous submission, a simple instruction to redraw will be insufficient and the device should be returned. However, because we registered the fess for her husband, we feel obligated to register it for her under the Grandfather clause.

Her current device, Vert, on a bend sinister between a dragon rampant contourny and another rampant, each maintaining a lyre Or, a rose vine vert flowered gules, is to be retained as a badge and associated with her alternate persona name, Brian Michael of the Valley.

Brychan ap Dafydd. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Damianus Petrolino. Badge for Compagnia del Falcomarino. Or, on a sun gules a double-headed osprey displayed argent, a base sable.

I believe that in period some allowance was made in drawing a blazoned cant (although admittedly probably not this much). In this case, preserving the cant takes precedence over the exact details of the drawing. The submitter should be told, however, to make the charge on the sun more osprey-like and less eagle-like.

Galeran Chanterel. Device. Per pale argent and azure, a dance between three fleurs-de-lys counterchanged.

Genevieve d'Evreux. Device change. Azure, three bendlets wavy argent.

Nice armory! Her current device, Azure, on a bend wavy argent between two butterflies Or three roses purpure, is released.

Giovanni de Moncellis. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Isabeau Michaela Hawke. Badge. (Fieldless) A turtle sable.

Kate{rv}ina of Bright Hills. Name and device. Azure, in pale a Latin cross bottonny and an open book Or, a bordure rayonny argent.

The name was submitted as Kateřina of the Bright Hills. The barony’s name, however, was registered without the article, so it should not be used here either.

Lochmere, Barony of. Badge for the Brewers, Vintners and Mazers Guild. Or honeycombed sable, in fess a garb vert and a bunch of grapes slipped and leaved proper.

Looking at the enlarged blazon, we determine that, while this is not period armory, it is sufficiently recognizable to be registerable. Note that, as of this meeting, we are declaring the non-medieval field treatment of honeycombing to be a "weirdness."

Manus O'Kean. Name and device. Checky Or and gules, a sagittary passant sable.

Novella the Fierce. Name and device. Sable, on a chevron between three ram's heads cabossed Or, three crosses crosslet fitchy gules.

Ottavio Todisco. Badge. (Fieldless) A flask per fess argent and Or.

Pavla Dmitrovna. Device change. Argent, on a pile between two open books gules four open books argent.

Her current device, Per pale vert and argent, three birds migrant counterchanged, is released.

Rosalind Delamere. Name.

Séamus Ó Cuileáin. Device. Vert, a cross formy within a stag's attires, a bordure raguly argent.

Szilágy Margit. Name and device. Per fess argent and sable, a raven rising, wings displayed, and a quill pen bendwise sinister counterchanged.

Tanglust wraig Brychan. Name.

Submitted as Tanglust verch Ednyfed wraig Brychan, according to Harpy, Welsh names did not include more than one direct relationship in a name. Tanglust verch Ednyfed would be the more typical form, but, based on the relationships she is trying to indicate, we believe she would prefer the above form.

Una of Aire Faucon. Badge. Argent, a talbot couchant sable between flaunches gules.

OUTLANDS

Anastasia Kievskaya. Name.

Bahiyyah bint Suhayl. Device change. Argent, on a fess gules between a falcon displayed and a cup sable, three sexfoils pierced argent.

Her former device Argent, a hawk rising, wings addorsed and inverted, sable, issuant from sinister three wolves’ teeth gules., is hereby retained as a badge.

Cailte MacLeòid. Name.

While this is registerable as submitted, please let the submitter know that Cailte is a masculine name, and that it is Gaelic, not Scottish.

Ciaran mac Cormaig. Name and device. Quarterly Or and sable, four fleurs-de-lys in cross bases to center counterchanged.

Ciaran mac Cormaig is the standard modern form of the name.

Elizabet Fergus Morrison. Name.

Eric of al-Barran. Name.

Francesca Faliero. Device. Per pale purpure and argent, three chevronels braced and in chief three fleurs-de-lys counterchanged.

Gerhardt of the Outlands. Device. Azure, a wyvern sejant between three roundels Or, each charged with a billet sable.

Submitted as Gerhardt Drachenmacher, the name was returned on the May 1999 LoAR.

James Morrison the Harper. Name and device. Argent, a chevron azure between two hammers bendwise sable and a harp gules.

Lance Armstrong. Name and device. Vert, a wolf's pawprint argent between five acorns two, two and one, Or.

Nesta Coed. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Óengus mac Conchobhair. Device. Argent, on a sinister glove sable an equal armed Celtic cross argent, a bordure counter-ermine.

Owen Blaidd. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Siobhán inghean uí Dhoibhilin. Name and device. Argent goutty de sang, on a bend gules a cup between two lions combatant all bendwise sinister Or.

Timothy O’Brien. Per pale azure and argent ermined vert, a chief counterchanged.

THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN RETURNED FOR FURTHER WORK:

ATLANTIA

Astasia de Moncellis. Device. Per bend wavy gules and sable, a decrescent and in chief two mullets argent.

This is being returned for having charges overlying a low contrast field with a complex line of division. An exception to this rule is only made when the overlap is very small, but that is not the case here.

Brychan ap Dafydd. Device. Vert, on a bend sinister argent three crosses palewise formy fitchy sable.

Conflict with Leslie the Brown, Vert, on a bend sinister argent a Hermit Thrush close proper (Hylocichla guttata). There is only a single CD for the changes to the tertiaries.

The submitter should be informed that the crosses following the line of the bend sinister would be more authentic.

Giovanni de Moncellis. Device. Per bend wavy gules and sable, a single-bitted battle-axe facing sinister and in chief two estoiles argent.

This is being returned for having charges overlying a low contrast field with a complex line of division. The axe itself is not the problem; its overlap is minor enough to maintain identifiability. With the estoile in chief, however, the line of division becomes fatally obscured.

Kerdych Goch. Device. Lozengy gules and Or.

Conflict with Monaco (important non-SCA arms), Lozengy argent and gules, and the Dukes of Teck (also important non-SCA arms), Lozengy bendwise sable and Or. There is no difference given between lozengy and lozengy bendwise.

Thomas of Calais. Badge. (Fieldless) On a tower sable masoned Or, a lion's head argent.

Conflict with Frederic of the West Tower, Argent, a tower sable, on its base a cross patonce voided argent. Upon examining the emblazon for Frederic, it is clear that the cross is argent, so there is only the CD for fieldlessness.

OUTLANDS

A’isha bint Asad Ud-Din. Device. Or, a sexfoil within the Arabic words "Kaana Khafi bishshawkihi Jamaaiat-il-Wardata" in annulo gules.

No translation was including for the Arabic words. Without evidence of what the phrase means, this cannot be registered.

Nesta Coed. Device. Or, a sprig of mistletoe inverted bendwise sinister proper, a bordure sable.

While the LoI blazoned the sprig as bendwise sinister, it is actually midway between that and palewise. Since we grant a difference for this, this problem is cause for return. Additionally this conflicts with Wulf Beornsson Or, a sprig of three poison ivy leaves inverted vert within a bordure sable., with one CD for type of the two sprigs.

Owen Blaidd. Device. Gules, on a decrescent Or a bear's pawprint bendwise gules, on a chief Or an arrow fesswise reversed sable.

This is being returned for a redraw. The arrow needs to be drawn with large fletching and point and the pawprint needs to be clearly drawn either palewise or bendwise, not halfway between the two as it is now.
