Month day: the date on the Letter of Intent, Letter of Pend and Discussion, or Letter of Intent to Protect.
(Month day): for administrative reasons, this LoI has not yet been scheduled.
[P Month day]: postmarked on that bracketed date, so the LoI is redated or postponed.
"-": no LoI is scheduled for that meeting from that kingdom.
?: tentative.

April: Wreath's meeting occurred April 19, with a road-show meeting on April 13 at An Tir's Heraldic Symposium.

June: On June 8, there was the usual Sunday-morning road-show meeting at Known World Heraldic Symposium, Saint Louis, Missouri, with all the sovereigns of arms.

August: Pelican's regular meeting is tentatively scheduled for August 23, and she will have a road-show meeting at Pennsic War.

September: Pelican's meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 27.

October: Wreath's meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 18. Pelican's meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 11.

November: Pelican's meeting is tentatively scheduled for November 15.

December: Pelican's meeting is tentatively scheduled for December 20.

Not all letters of intent may be considered when they are originally scheduled on this cover letter. The date of mailing of the LoI, date of receipt of the Laurel packet, or other factors may delay consideration of certain letters of intent. Additionally, some letters of intent received may not have been scheduled because the administrative requirements (receipt of the forms packet, receipt of the necessary fees, et cetera) have not yet been met.

REMINDER: Until all administrative requirements are met, the letter may not be scheduled.

From Laurel: Thanks for the Memories, KWHS 2003

We would like to thank Lady Shariya and the Barony of Three Rivers for hosting a wonderful Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium in St. Louis. There were many interesting classes and much was learned by all. Thank you for a wonderful symposium.

From Laurel: Announcing KWHS 2004

The Shire of Owl's Reste (East Kingdom) will be the host for the Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium 2004 to be held June 25-27, 2004. It will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center outside of New Cumberland, PA. Details are being finalized but we know that Doctor Gerard Brault, Penn State Professor of Medieval Studies and author of several books on medieval heraldry, will be a teacher. Also anticipated is a speaker from the Walters Museum in Baltimore from their manuscript collection. The event Web site is under construction and will be available soon.

From Laurel: Change to Applications for Next Laurel

Baron Modar Neznanich has withdrawn his team's application for the Laurel Sovereign of Arms office. The Board of Directors will consider the remaining application at their July meeting. Comments are due to the Board by July 1, 2003.

From Laurel: Laurel Does Not Know It All

We have all seen instances when a submission was returned that was documented from a previously accepted submission - the old standard phrase is "Past registration does not ensure future registration." We are hopefully continuing to learn and this moving target can sometimes cause a name or device to be returned even just a month after a similar submission was accepted. A few weeks ago there was a discussion concerning the reply to a "But Laurel said ..." argument. The best summary of the situation comes from Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn:

One should always read any decision by Laurel as being prefixed by "Based on the available knowledge, research, and analysis available to us at this time, it is our understanding that ..."

Many heralds (on all levels of the hierarchy) often forget this and word statements of current knowledge as if they were Absolute Truth, but there's still an onus on the listener as well to insert the disclaimer.

We require your help to know "the truth". The current knowledge is extended by the research of the College of Arms, the College of Heralds, and the submitters. Any documentation provided on a submission, whether it is from the submitter, the Kingdom College of Heralds, or the College of Arms commenters, goes a long way to helping us all learn. If you provide "the truth" in your commentary and submissions work, that leads to better recreation and we all benefit from the latest best attempt at determining "the truth".

Roster Changes

It's time to catch up with roster changes for the Principalies in the Kingdom of the West. We have updates for the Principalies of Cynagua, Oertha, and the Mists.

For the Principality of the Mists, the new Seawolf Herald (West), Marguerite du Royon ..., is added to the roster. The previous Seawolf Herald, Kiriana Michaelson ..., is no longer on the roster.

For the Principality of Oertha, the new Stellanordica Herald (West), Clare Elena de Montfort of Strathclyde ..., is added to the roster. The previous Stellanordica Herald, Bjarni Edwardsson ..., is no longer on the roster.

From Laurel Clerk: Society Pages

LoAR cover letters over the years have occasionally included short social notices of possible interest to the College of Arms, including major awards, marriages, births, and such. Anyone can send social notices to submissions@sca.org. I tend not to notice such announcements in LoIs and LoCs. I can make no promises about printing them, though; they may be printed as space and time permit.

Send What to Whom

For all Letters of Intent, Comment, Response, Correction, et cetera, send one paper copy to each of Laurel PKoA and Wreath QoA at their mailing addresses as shown on the College of Arms Mailing List.

Send Laurel office copies of all submissions-related paper, including

to Pelican QoA at her roster address: ....

Send Laurel office copies of all submissions-related electronic files to submissions@sca.org. In particular, the Laurel Clerk would very much appreciate e-mailed copies of all LoIs, LoCs, LoRs, et cetera.

Send roster changes and corrections to Lord Symond Bayard le Gris, Bruce R. Nevins, 2527 E. 3rd St., Tucson, AZ, 85716-4114, 520-795-6000, 520-795-0158 (fax), bnevins@nexiliscom.com. College of Arms members can also request a copy of the current roster from Symond.

For subscriptions to the paper copy of the LoAR, please contact Symond, above. The cost for an LoAR subscription is $25 a year. Please make all checks or money orders payable to "SCA Inc.-College of Arms". For subscriptions to the electronic copy of the LoAR, please contact Laurel at herald@sca.org. The electronic copy is available free of charge.

For all administrative matters, or for questions about whom to send to, please contact Laurel Principal King of Arms, whose contact information heads this letter.

Pray know that I remain

In service
