As you should know by now, it is time for me to step down as Laurel and hand the crown and tabard off to another, namely Andrewe Bawldwyn. Andrewe will do a fine job as Laurel and I thank him for stepping up to take it on. Often people say, "I couldn't have done it without X". Not to be a clich{e'}, but I couldn't have done this job without many many people. The task of registering names and armory is a hard one, and its one that is primarily done by the Pelican and Wreath Sovereigns of Arms. Given that, I owe a great deal to Juliana de Luna, Emma de Fetherstan, Lillia de Vaux, and Brunissende Dragonette. I cannot thank them enough for their work for the College and for the SCA as a whole. My friends, thank you. Likewise, I have a number of other staff members whose work helps smooth the registration process, helps strengthen the College and help improve heraldry throughout the Known World. Marie, Istvan, Nesscia, Herveus, Daniel, Reis, Wu and Shauna have been a great help to me and to the College at large. Thank you all for your help. Finally, I need to thank all the Principal Heralds I have worked with. You all are awesome and have helped make this job easy. Thank you all for your help and your good work. And with that, I'm gone. I'll still be around, but this is no longer the Laurel you're looking for. Thank you again, Gabriel **** From Laurel Incoming: Big shoes to fill... **** Hi All, I'm Andrewe Bawldwyn... More in a moment, but first, I want to thank Meistari Gabriel for his hard work during his tenure. We saw many changes to the College of Arms under Gabriel's stewardship... SENA, Kingdom Gardens, No Paper to Laurel to name just a few... By themselves, each of these changes are not small things; together they present a wonderful legacy, and huge shoes that Gabriel is leaving behind. I look forward to the opportunity to continue the stewardship and leadership that Gabriel has displayed. For those of you who do not know me, I hail from the Barony of Bryn Gwlad in Ansteorra (Austin, Texas.) I have been in the SCA since 2003, and have been a herald from my very first event, where I learned what stunt court heraldry was all about... My interests lie generally in the heraldic bureaucracy, precedence heraldry, and protocol. I have served previously as Star Principal Herald of Ansteorra, Bordure Herald (Ansteorra external submissions), and regional / local positions. Away from the SCA I play as a flight paramedic. I am very much excited to serve the College of Arms and SCA as Laurel, and I look forward to working with everyone. Andrewe **** From Laurel: Herald Extraordinary **** The College of Arms has a rank of Herald Extraordinary that has a long and honored history. The rank was formally created and defined in the July 1981 cover letter by Wilhelm Laurel. The intent of the rank is to recognize and reward "... those heralds who have greatly served the College of Heralds and/or the College of Arms and have achieved the highest level of competence in heraldry." Further, each Herald Extraordinary shall have a personal title. Herveus d'Ormonde has given long and extraordinary service to the College of Arms in many capacities, including his work as Morsulus Herald. As such, I hereby grant Herveus d'Ormonde the rank of Herald Extraordinary. He may at his convenience choose and submit a personal heraldic title to be registered to him. **** From Laurel: Ioseph of Locksley **** Sadly, we recently learned of the death of Ioseph of Locksley (modernly Joe Bethancourt), second Laurel King of Arms. Ioseph's impacts on the College are still felt today. Among various practices he instituted, Ioseph is responsible for our registration limits, and the appearance of Laurel wreaths in group arms. In AS IX, Ioseph played an instrumental role in removing the bar against women fighters in the Society, after calling for opinions and evidence of historical warrior women. Outside of the College of Arms, Ioseph was a prolific bard, both in the SCA, and in the modern world. Last year he was inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame. Though Ioseph has not been active in the SCA for several years, it is clear that his influence has remained present, and will likely endure for the foreseeable future. He will be missed greatly. **** From Wreath: Adding the Japan Emperor mon to the list of restricted charges **** A submission considered this month was using a charge of a sixteen-petalled lotus affronty which led to discussion about the mon of the emperor of Japan. Discussion brought to light the fact that the current protected form of the mon is not accurately reflecting actual usage. At this point, we are reblazoning it and adding it to the list of restricted charges as _a sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum_. **** Society Pages **** On August 6, at Pennsic War, Lillia de Vaux, Pelican Queen of Arms, was made a Companion of the Order of the Pelican by the Crown of the East. At the same court of their Majesties of the East, Kenric {ae}t Estseax, former Brigantia Principal Herald and Eastern Crown Herald, was made a Companion of the Order of the Laurel. On August 7, also at Pennsic War, Gisela vom Kreuzbach, Triton Principal Herald of Atlantia, elevated Hr{o'}{dh}n{y'} R{o,}gnvaldsd{o'}ttir, Golden Dolphin Herald, to the rank and title of Herald Extraordinary. On August 16, Andrewe Bawldwyn, incoming Laurel King of Arms, was inducted into the Order of the Pelican by Their Majesties Sven and Antigone of Ansteorra.
