Society for Creative Anachronism College of Arms 427 W Ave Spokane, WA 99203 +1-509-570-4189 laurel@heraldry.sca.org For the March 2018 meetings, printed May 29, 2018 To all the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive, from Juliana Laurel, Alys Pelican, and Cormac Wreath, greetings. **** From Wreath: IAP and ERA and other fun acronyms **** A registration considered this month depended on the Existing Registration Allowance to register a portion of a design that has since been ruled unregisterable. The submission also had a step from period practice for the use of non-European fauna, per SENA A2B4b. The device was returned for use of both an Existing Registration Allowance element and a step from period practice. SENA A2B3 states that "The use of the existing registration allowance does not allow the submitter to evade new style problems (as discussed in A.1 through A.3). It only allows the submitter to evade style problems that already exist with their registered armory." By their nature, each design element which carries a step from period practice introduces a minor "style problem" to a piece of armory; this is why inclusion of more than one will cause the design to be returned. Therefore, items that carry a step from period practice which already appear in the existing registration will continue to be allowed in a new submission relying upon the Existing Registration Allowance. However, adding an element that is a step from period practice to a design that is already reliant upon the Existing Registration Allowance for passage is grounds for return. Commenters asked whether this ruling would impact Individually Attested Patterns (IAP). SENA A1A delineates between the two armory rule sets: Core Style, which permits steps from period practice, and IAPs, which only permit elements otherwise considered in core style as a step from period practice "when documented as being used in the time and place as the rest of the submission." Effectively, steps from period practice don't exist under IAP rules, because all items in an IAP must be demonstrated as a period practice. However, once registered, there is little to delineate between armory submitted under Core Style rules or an IAP other than a note in the LoAR. We ask commenters to discuss under what circumstances armorial designs registered using an IAP should be considered for an ERA. Should they be treated differently than Core Style registrations? Should a design registered under an IAP but incompatible with Core Style design be allowed to subseqeuently incorporate elements of Core Style that are not documentable to the time period and culture of the IAP? For example: Should a submitter whose father has registered Japanese mon under an IAP be allowed to register his father's device, differenced by a label in the style of early English heraldry? **** From Wreath: Proper Centaurs **** We have very few centaurs in SCA heraldry, and even fewer that are blazoned proper. The last centaur registered with any portion of the charge tinctured "proper" is from 1989. It should come as little surprise, then, that the definition of a centaur's proper coloration has not been explicitly defined, with most of the registrations having some sort of indicator (e.g. Bay, Chestnut) for the tincture of the horse part, or otherwise blazoning the equine bits with a heraldic tincture and describing the human torso as proper. There are, however, two examples of a centaur being blazoned as proper without further description: The devices of Simonetta de Galicia, registered August 1979, "Argent, a sagittary trippant proper and a lion counterrampant gules, on a chief azure three crescents argent" and Tancred de Galicia, registered October 1979 (same, with an added label). Upon review of the archived artwork, both centaurs have caucasian human skin and brown horse bodies. The centaur is a period heraldic charge, with a properly tinctured example found in the arms of De Trivilini in Insignia urbium Italiae septentrionalis: Nobilium Mediolanensium (BSB Cod.icon. 270, 410 recto). In this example, the brown horse body and caucasian-skinned human torso are identical in tincture to the registered arms cited above. We therefore accept the definition as the standard definition of a centaur proper. **** From Wreath: Augmentations and badges **** The December Palimpsest Rules Letter proposed new rules for adding augmentations to badges. Discussion at the Wreath meeting raised questions about whether a single augmentation could be applied to more than one item of armory, and whether the use of augmentations on branch badges should be restricted. We are directing Palimpsest to draft new versions of the proposed rules to clarify these points. **** From Pelican: On Using Black's _Surnames of Scotland_ **** In most ways, Black's _Surnames of Scotland_ is an excellent and valuable source. However, as with many sources of a certain age, Black must be used with care. Black is most useful for documenting Scots names from the 15th and 16th centuries. Header spellings from Black are not registerable "unless they are dated or shown to be consistent with period spellings." [Duncan MacMillan, 7/2017 LoAR, A-East] The same is true for the hypothetical Gaelic root forms listed by Black (generally in italics). His Gaelic forms are "nearly always modern normalized forms" and thus, by precedent, are not registerable without corroborating documentation from another reliable source. [Seamus Mac Enrig, 09/2006 LoAR, A-Meridies] Scottish records from the 1400s and earlier were generally in Latin. Any spelling from 1400 or earlier that is not obviously Latinized likely was modernized by Black and needs corroboration from another source. Records of the Parliaments of Scotland to 1707 (http://www.rps.ac.uk/), Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (found as part of the Dictionary of the Scots Language at http://www.dsl.ac.uk/), and British History Online (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/) can be very useful for corroborating spellings found in Black. British History Online materials may be behind a paywall, but many senior heralds have subscriptions and are willing to assist in obtaining documentation. As always, if there are any questions about whether particular information in Black is reliable, please feel free to contact me. If I cannot answer the question myself I can refer you to a herald on my staff who can do so. **** Society Pages **** On April 7, at the Beer and Bacon Bash in the Shire of Hunters Home, Their Majesties {AE}thelmearc Gareth and Juliana elevated Madoc Arundel, Garnet Herald and Shrike Herald Extraordinary, to the Order of the Laurel.
