For the September 2019 meetings, printed December 1, 2019

To all the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive, from Juliana Laurel, Alys Pelican, and Cormac Wreath, greetings.

* Commendations to Commenters

From Pelican: This month I wish to extend my hearty thanks to Mistress Solveig Ţrándardóttir, the College's expert in Japanese naming. Solveig's work in this area is exceptional. Pelican's job would be significantly harder if we were not able to turn to her as a resource.

* From Wreath: Period Depictions of Flames

This month, we were asked to consider a badge that featured a charge on a flame. The specific art for the flame was taken from the Traceable Art Project: http://heraldicart.org/flame/#flame-4

This depiction of flame is inherently modern, with the tongues of flame ending in a forked "crab claw" design seen less in medieval manuscripts and more on the sides of hot rods. Such depictions will be disallowed for all submissions that appear on external letters published after March 2020.

More generally, flames should be depicted with individual tongues conjoined into a single mass, preferably with internal detailing even if there is a tertiary charge. The licks of flame that are separated from the main body in images 1 and 3 of the Traceable Art Project above should be omitted in submissions.

* Society Pages

A whole set of awards to Meridian heralds! On September 28, Sara al-Garnatiyya, Torch Herald (court), was inducted into the Order of the Burning Trumpet. On November 5, Kurt Bogner, Cypher Pursuivant (submissions), was also inducted into the order. The Burning Trumpet is a non-armigerous order, given to those who have enriched the kingdom greatly through their service in the Herald's office.

Also on November 5, Dancett Derpy, former Arbor Pursuivant (website), was made a companion of the Order of the Bough. The Order of the Bough is a grant-level service award.

And finally, on November 9, Adelaide Collette de Monferrer was made a companion of the Order of the Pelican, not least due to her work in onomastics.

Please send information about happenings to major heralds and major happenings to all heralds to Laurel, so that it can be published here.
