For the September 2021 meetings, printed November 14 2021

To all the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive, from Emma Laurel, Elisabetta Pelican, and Oddr Wreath, greetings.

* From Laurel: New Faces!

Several principal herald office are soon due to turn over in the next couple of months, and at least one already has! For the kingdom of Ealdormere, we say a sincere thank you to Rylyn Buchanan, who (like many others!) had an extra-long tenure due to the pandemic. Stepping in to fill those shoes as the new Trillium Principal Herald is Nika Dmitrieva doch' Zvezdina. I'm sure she'll do excellent work.

Our faithful archivist, Shauna of Carrick Point, has reached the point with archiving projects that another set of hands will be useful. And so we introduce her new deputy archivist, Helena De Argentoune. Requests sent to the archivist email account will be answered swiftly by one of these two hard workers. Thank you both!

* From Laurel: vKWHSS News!

The next Mid-Year Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium is happening January 14th to 16th, 2022, and we need you to teach your favorite classes virtually, from the comfort of your own home! We are looking for teachers for all aspects of heraldic and scribal practice and history, focusing on all knowledge and skill levels. Classes will be scheduled around the clock, so that there is room for everyone to teach and participate at a time convenient to them.

Please visit the website to pre-register for the event as well as to propose classes you'd like to teach: https://kwhss.sca.org

* From Wreath: Updates to SENA Appendix I - Charge Group Theory

Based on the proposals in the Palimpsest June 1st Rules Letter and the commentary received, the following changes to SENA Appendix I are being made:

The updated appendix will be available at http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#AppendixI shortly.

We wish to thank Iago Boar for his help with these updates, particularly in finding examples of secondary charges with maintained charges in period heraldry.

* From Pelican: SENA PN5B5 and NPN5B5 - Offensiveness by Association

The proposal on the June 2nd Palimpsest Rules Letter to add a reference to Appendix N, Banned and Potentially Problematic Place Names, to PN5B5 is accepted.

The revised wording of that section is:

5. Offensiveness by Association: Names that reference places, persons, events or concepts that are morally repugnant to a large segment of the SCA or the general public will not be registered. The reference must be clear and unmistakable. When considering whether a name is offensive by association, any related armory that contributes to the appearance of offensiveness may be taken into account. The standard for offensiveness by association is high and, with the exception of the examples below and in Appendix N, each potentially offensive name element should be considered on a case-by-case basis. In undertaking the case-by-case analysis, the following factors should be considered: (1) the level of fame/infamy of the offensive association; (2) whether the name element is better known for things other than the offensive association; and (3) any other factors that suggest or refute offensiveness.

The same change in made in NPN5B5 for non-personal names:

5. Offensiveness by Association: Non-personal names that reference places, persons, events or concepts that are morally repugnant to a large segment of the SCA or the general public will not be registered. The updated version of SENA will be available at http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html after the January 2022 BoD meeting.
