For the December 2021 meetings, printed February 2, 2022

To all the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive, from Emma Laurel, Elisabetta Pelican, and Oddr Wreath, greetings.

* From Laurel: Thanks for vKWHSS!

As I write this, we've just finished vKWHSS, and as with the first one it was a resounding success. With nearly 300 people registered for the event and over 50 hours of classes, there was something for everyone. I'd like to thank the team of Lady Alexandra (Shandra) Vazquez de Granada from Calontir, Baronessa Sara al-Garnatiyya from Meridies, Groza Novgorodskaia from Gleann Abhann, their helpers Viscountess Sadb Jófreysóttir, Dame Arwyn of Leicester and Sultana A'isha Rayhana al-Karim, all from Avacal, and the many other helpers who moderated rooms, helped with recordings, and managed the Discord. We couldn't have done it without you! Next January's vKWHSS will be hosted by those same lovely folks from Avacal. See you then!

* From Laurel: KWHSS News!

The pandemic is still no one's friend. While we wished to be able to hold an in-person KWHSS for 2022, this year's is going to be virtual once again. This time, KWHSS will be hosted by the Kingdom of Ansteorra and the Principality of Vindheim, to be held on the weekend of July 22-24, 2022. Stay tuned for more details!

It's not too late to start thinking about KWHSS 2023! If your kingdom would like to host what we all hope will be an in-person event next June or July, please feel free to ask my office any questions you may have. We'd like to have full bids entered into OSCAR as an "other" letter, and would like even more to be able to announce the location of the 2023 event site a year in advance.

* From Laurel: Not One But Two

The College of Arms has a rank of Herald Extraordinary that has a long and honored history. The rank was formally created and defined in the July 1981 cover letter by Wilhelm Laurel. The intent of the rank is to recognize and reward "... those heralds who have greatly served the College of Heralds and/or the College of Arms and have achieved the highest level of competence in heraldry."

Iago ab Adam has offered considerable effort and service to the College of Arms in the study of armory. It was my pleasure, at the first Roadshow at vKWHSS on January 15, to confer upon him the rank and style of Herald Extraordinary, and charge him to register a title of his choosing with the College of Arms.

Earlier in that same Roadshow in Meridian court, Her Majesty Thorkatla, in conjunction with Sara Beacon Principal Herald, did name Flainnait inghean ui hEighnigh a Herald Extraordinary, and charge her to register a title of her choosing.

Congratulations to both!

* From Pelican: Admin Handbook Appendix H Update

The submission this month of Omecipactli Atlixca, which is a Nahuatl name, introduced us to a new source - "Nomen est omen: Pre-Hispanic Nahua Naming Patterns" by Anastasia Kalyuta (https://www.mexicolore.co.uk/aztecs/language/prehispanic-nahua-naming-patterns). It is informative for anyone looking for a Nahuatl name. We have directed Palimpsest to add this to Appendix H of the Admin Handbook.

We thank Kallinikos Gavra for their extensive research into Nahuatl names and introducing us to this source.
