PRECEDENTS OF THE S.C.A. COLLEGE OF ARMS

The 1st Tenure of Da'ud Ibn Auda (1st year)

Introduction

This document contains the Precedents from the first year of Master Da'ud ibn Auda's tenure as Laurel Sovereign of Arms: the Letter of Acceptance and Return that resulted from the meeting held at the 1990 Heraldic Symposium, the Letters of Acceptance and Return dated July 1990 to June 1991, and the cover letters associated with them.

All quotes are direct quotes from the LoAR (although obvious typographical errors have been corrected without notation). Emendations or comments for clarity are enclosed in [square brackets] - any square brackets in the original quote will be replaced by {curly brackets}. Following the policy of general anonymity of names and blazons when possible, <angle brackets> are used to set off phrases such as <tertiary charge> in the middle of a "commonized" name or blazon. Deletions at the beginning or the end of a quote are not indicated, but deletions in the middle of a quote to remove material not pertinent to the discussion will be indicated by ellipses (...).

The choice of headers is mine alone, and most topics are filed under more than one header. Within a header, the precedents are filed in order of date (except for the fact that cover letter citations will precede the associated letter). If a precedent has been superceded, a note in [square brackets] will refer the reader to the later precedent. An index of the topics covered and the major headers under which they are found is provided at the end of this document.

I have generally tried to follow the examples set by Master Da'ud and Baron Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme in compiling (respectively) Mistress Alisoun's and Master Baldwin's Precedents. One exception is in including straightforward, but unquotable (and thus, somewhat implied) rulings (which Master Da'ud has allowed me to do). For example, the hypothetical ruling "[Azure, a paramecium argent vs. Gules, a kidney bean argent] There is only one CVD, for field" would strongly imply that there was no difference given for type between a kidney bean and a paramecium. In these cases I will give the devices or names compared, the exact quote, and the implication in [square brackets]. I will only give such implied rulings if they seem entirely clear, and there are no existing explicit precedents (before or after). The reader is highly encouraged to examine the original rulings in these (and all) cases.

As a general rule, if there are multiple precedents on the same topic, I will only give the earliest, unless the later precedents elaborate, add to, or overrule the information in the first precedent. I will sometimes give a ruling where Master Da'ud reaffirmed a previous Laurel's precedent if the previous precedent had been under dispute.

In closing, I would like to thank Baron Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme and Mistress Keridwen ferch Morgan Glasfryn for reviewing early drafts of this document, Mistress Angelina Nicollette de Beaumont for the final text formatting and proofreading, and Free Trumpet Press West for the printing.
