Steppes, Barony of. Badge of the Order of the Tread (of the Steppes).

William Blackfox. Barry wavy of ten argent and azure, an African lion passant erect playing a Scottish bagpipe proper within a bordure gules.

NOTE: The triple-drone bagpipe is out of period. Redraw this with two drones. Tartans are mostly out of period, and so I have left the coloration of the bagpipe to the scribe.

Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane. Or, a black-figure neck-amphora, cracked in chief, sable.

Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane. Badge for Taigh Móran Chat. Azure, semé of domestic cat's heads caboshed Or.

Catalina de la Estrella. Argent, a domestic cat couchant between in pale two mullets vert.

Cayle of Firwood. Argent, a dragon sejant vert between in chief two fir trees eradicated proper and a base vert. (Abies balsamea)

Darcy Campion of Devereaux. Per pale argent and sable, a garden rose stalked and leaved, in chief three fleur-de-lys, one and two, all counterchanged.

NOTE: "Darcy" is a male given name that derives from the French surname d'Arcy. It is maybe in period. Because Darcy is her mundane name, I will pass it as a special-case approval.

David Hawkwood. Azure, six bars wavy Or, on a pile argent in pale a hawk stooping and a Spanish galleon gules.

Dirk Edward of Frijia. Azure, three hearts Or, on a chief argent, a sword fesswise argent, hilted sable, the blade enflamed gules.

NOTE: Dirk is his mundane given name, so he can have it as a special case. Addition of a chief with charges on the chief counts as a point and a half.

Dafydd Aelfwythsen. Vert, on a bend cotissed Or three roundels purpure and in sinister chief a unicorn forcené Or.

NOTE: "Dafydd" is the correct period Welsh form for David, not "Dyvedd," so I have changed it.

Edmund Lindsey. Purpure, on a bend Or between a cross botanny gules fimbriated and a sun in splendor Or, a serpent glissant wavy gules.

Elennar Linwen. Argent, a rose bendwise sinister azure, slipped and leaved sable, within a bordure azure charged with a tressure argent.

Francesca della Terrazza. Per pale Or and purpure, a chevron embattled pean between in chevron two greyhounds courant respectant and an escallop, all counterchanged.

NOTE: The proper Italian form for "of the Terrace" is "della Terrazza," not "de ca Terrazza."

Fret, Confederation of the. Per saltire argent and ermine, a fret Or, fimbriated sable.

NOTE: Ermine is a white field with black spots. It is NEVER done with silver. It represents white furry tails with black tips. The use of white would give more contrast to a device which is sadly lacking in same. The device is technically legal and grudgingly approved.

Haleric Vladislavna Poleski. Per bend vert and argent, a seal sejant erect to sinister counterchanged.

NOTE: Heraldry doesn't care what positions a given animal can or cannot do in nature. It would be heraldically acceptable to have a seal rampant, even though that is also impossible. An animal sejant erect has the back legs under the body facing in the same direction as the head, even if one must break them to make them do that in nature.

Heldur Jäätis Karu. Per bend azure and sable, in pale a European white birch leaf between the attire of a stag's head caboshed argent.

NOTE: The partitive case of "ice" in Estonian is "jäätis," not "jää."

Ivyeinrust, Bailiwick of. Name approval only.

Jovonne d'Esprit. Per pale gules and ermine, in dexter a garden tulip Or and on a chief double arched or three doves descending sable.

Kale Harlansson of Gotland. Or, a bear dormant to sinister sable maintaining a halberd bendwise reversed gules entwined of a grapevine vert.

NOTE: An argent halberd on Or is metal on metal. As allowed on the form, I have changed the halberd to gules. I would like to see documentation on "Kale."

Katya the Halfhanded. Or, on a bend azure, cotissed gules, between two cinquefoils azure pierced Or, three hawk's bells Or.

Konrad Lockner of Idelberg. Counter-ermine, a scarpe gules, overall a wyvern displayed argent maintaining in the dexter claw a bow saw and in the sinister claw a mallet, proper.

Kristen Ahearn. Vert, upon a ball of flame Or a bull rampant to sinister, head lowered, sable.

Laura Hawkwood. Formerly Laura de Segovia. Ermine, on a pile Or a phoenix gules.

Maria von Morgenröte. Argent, to dexter a dagger sable and to sinister in pale two gouttes de sang and in chief a willow branch erased enarched reversed vert.

NOTE: "Morgen" is feminine, so the correct form is Morgenröte and, as a place name, this needs no article, so I have changed the name to the proper form. If you can show that period usage was Morgenrot, I'll change it back.

Marieke van de Dal. Sable, on a bend argent a bendlet voided azure, therein five beech leaves palewise vert.

NOTE: The proper spelling for "valley" in Dutch is Dal. It is neuter, so the proper article is "de."

Rhydderich Hael, Barony of the. Badge for Armourers' Guild. Per fess vert and sable, issuant from dexter chief a lightning flash and in sinister chief a sun, all within a bordure argent.

Southe Banke, Borough of. Badge. Or, a pall wavy azure, in dexter a cross patonce gules.

NOTE: When this group achieves five subscribing members, it can become a College and then register arms with a laurel wreath. A Borough is like a guild. It is registered under its own name, but can only register a badge. Since it is not an SCA branch yet, it does not put a laurel wreath on its badge.

Stephen of Silverwing. Formerly Samuel ben Isaac of Sarkél. Azure, chapé ployé invected, an owl close affronté argent.

Taran of Windy Hill. Badge. Per fess embattled azure and sable, an Aeolus Or.

NOTE: Boreas is the North Wind, which has an icy breath. It is therefore argent. This is an Aeolus, i.e., a wind, no direction specified. I will change the blazon of his device to match.

Yvan Wolvesbane. Per bend sinister gules and azure, a wyvern statant argent and in dexter chief an axe bendwise sinister reversed Or.

Kingdom of the West

Ammaerlin de Montrose et Chardonnay. Per bend azure and gules, a bend Or, in sinister chief two horse's heads addorsed and conjoined at the neck argent.

NOTE: Reblazon.

Aelfwynn Gyrðesdohtor. Seal. A sea-otter erect.

NOTE: Seal approved. A sea-monster is by default the heraldic form unless specified as natural. Hence, this is by default the heraldic sea-otter, consisting of the upper half of an otter and a mermaid's tail.

Carandalis of Ryge. Sable, a leopard's head caboshed Or, on a chief enarched gules, fimbriated, a dexter gauntlet fesswise argent.

NOTE: In the SCA we use heads caboshed instead of faces.

David of Staffa. Or, a hippopotamus statant azure, a base engrailed vert.

Fiona von Steinhaus. Per pale Or and azure, two pegasi combattant between in pale a crescent pendant and a compass star, all within a bordure counterchanged.

NOTE: Reblazon. Vesper has convinced me that a crescent pendant is a proper period version of a crescent inverted and so I allow it.

Morrigan Fitz-Rolf. Household badge. Sable, a cinquefoil argent overall a dragon dormant to sinister proper.

Morrigan Fitz-Rolf. Badge. Azure, a bendlet gemel wavy between in bend a crescent between two mullets and in bend a mullet between two crescents, all argent.

NOTE: These were previously passed but were left out of the Ordinary.

Richard Coney Tighe. Badge. Azure, a brock rampant proper between three mullets argent.

REJECTIONS

Kingdom of Ansteorra

Althea Gloria of Tyne. Argent, a Welsh pony courant sable, bridled argent, above five roses conjoined in fess gules.

NOTE: Appeal rejected. All breeds of the species Equus equus are horses, as far as heraldry is concerned. The difference of breed comes in the coloration. Minor bodily differences are matters for the artist.

Elynor Glyndewyn. Per saltire sable and azure, a fox and a great anteater combattant argent, in chief a sun Or. (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)

NOTE: cyfaill = friend; Dewi = David; dewin = wizard; wywyn = onions; wyn = lamb. Dewyn doesn't exist. "Glyndewyn" would translate as Valley of Wizards, and therefore should not be used. Resubmit a different surname. The device is OK.

Hunnar Torsk Balevare. Per bend azure and gules, ermined argent, a bend Or, in sinister chief a seagull migrant bendwise sinister inverted argent.

NOTE: Conflicts with Ammaerlin de Montrose et Chardonnay: Per bend azure and gules, a bend Or, in sinister chief two horse's heads addorsed and conjoined at the necks argent. (The blazon in the Ordinary is wrong.)

Isolde Dione Euves d'Argent. Or, on a pair of flaunches azure two fleurs-de-lys Or.

NOTE: Try writing to Lothar of Rothenborg for permission (c/o 3634 East Almeria, Phoenix, AZ 85008). (Aten, can you help find Lothar?) I still think the two are too close.

Ivan Gregoriyevich Nyetskaya. Per bend sinister argent and sable, in bend two fragile prickly pear flowers gules seeded Or, entwined by acanthus leaves vert. (Opuntia fragilis)

NOTE: The proper patronymic form is "Gregorevich." The masculine family name form for "not" is "Nyetskoff." 'Nyetskaya" is feminine. In any event, it is not a proper family name. The device without fimbriating is color on color in base. With the fimbriation it is metal on metal in chief. In any event, the fimbriation adds excessive complexity. Try putting the two flowers on a bend Or.

Nara of Fernwell. Vert, a stag's head caboshed within a bordure of fern argent. (Polypodium vulgaris)

NOTE: The fern looks too much like a laurel wreath. This is very similar to Robert Kinslayer: Vert, a stag's head caboshed within a double tressure Or. Also similar to Chesham: Vert; a stag's head caboshed argent, attired Or, within a bordure argent

(Papworth, p. 916).

Robin of Gilwell. Ermine, on a chief double arched gules a mustache Or.

NOTE: Appeal denied. I will grant you that this style of mustache is in period. I still do not believe that a mustache is an acceptable period charge in heraldry. They just didn't use that sort of thing in our period. A wave is a standard Japanese charge in mon.

Tessa of the Gardens. Tierce per pall inverted Or, argent and ermine, a white pine couped surmounted in its sinister chief by a roundel, both azure counterchanged Or, and an eglantine, flowered and budded azure, barbed, seeded, slipped and leaved proper. (Pinus strobus) (Rosa rubiginosa)

NOTE: A roundel offset from a tree and counterchanged is not period heraldry. Remove the roundel. I highly recommend adding a pall inverted to this to separate the metal areas. Ermine next to argent blends together.

Thomas Red Hawke. Badge. Azure, a pair of wings argent, overall a base embattled gules.

NOTE: Color on color. Fimbriate the base. Then it would be Azure, a pair of wings argent issuant from a base embattled gules, fimbriated argent.

Kingdom of the East

Aelfwine Denedom. Badge for House Stormgard. Azure, a triple-towered castle on a hill with portcullis open all sable, environed of, and fimbriated with, natural lightning argent.

NOTE: This is a landscape. The lightning is not a heraldic form. The whole thing is not heraldic. The name conflicts with House Stormgarth.

Aelwyn Edhelran. Azure, two swords in saltire proper between two garden roses, stalked and leaved, issuant from and conjoined in base, in chief a mullet of eight points Or.

NOTE: "Eledraen" is the proper Sindarin spelling for "elf wander." The use of "elf wander" plus "white brow" would imply the person is an elf. Choose a different surname. A garden rose is your basic multi-petaled rose you see in your garden, as opposed to the five-petaled heraldic rose. No genus and species need be given. The device is OK.

Aquel of Darkstead Wood. Badge for House Skold. Vert, a brideskold proper.

NOTE: I need documentation for brideskold. It isn't in Parker's.

Batsheva Mendelovna Labitsky. Gules, on a heart argent a heraldic rose slipped and leaved vert.

NOTE: Your name is in the modern Russian style of three names (given name, patronymic, family name). This is out of period for a Jew. They didn't use three names like that until they were required by law to do so, which occurred after our period. Either be Jewish and drop the Labitsky, or be Russian and replace Batsheva with a Russian given name.

Catherine Delleray. Gyronny of twelve azure and argent, a mullet of eight points throughout Or.

NOTE: Delleray is a surname from Darkover. It is not a correct variant of Del Rey, as it adds "le," which is redundant. "Delleray" translates as "of the the king." The device is OK.

Charles Stewart O'Connor. Gules, a knot of four loops and four tassels argent.

NOTE: This is not a knot. It cannot be tied as shown. It cannot be properly described. Has it a name? If it was a Stuart badge, then you can't use it undifferenced.

Eofn ap Erwyn. Sable, issuant from base a mountain Or, snowcapped, in dexter chief a snowflake argent.

NOTE: eofn = bold; erwyn = fierce. Neither is a given name. You need a given name. A mountain Or snowcapped argent is metal on metal.

Godfrey von Ballard. Argent, three swords, two in chevron, one palewise, conjoined at the tip between in pale a mullet azure and a cross patty gules, a chief dovetailed azure.

NOTE: Dovetailed is out of period. I will go along with the College and stop its use in the SCA. This device is too busy. It has six charges.

Danamas of Starlinghurst. Badge for House of the Green Linnet; name change to Danamas*. A linnet close vert perched upon a holly branch, leaved and fructed, proper. (Ilex aquifolium)

NOTE: Badge OK. Name change rejected. Danamas Icarus John-Paul Kirkwood has too many names and is therefore not period usage. Danamas is Greek, Icarus is Latin, and John-Paul Kirkwood is English. This is thus three languages. *Icarus John-Paul Kirkwood) 2nd NOTE: I am registering the badge to the old name.

Hrolfr son of Ugi-who-was-burnt-in-his-house. Vert, a pair of pincers bendwise maintaining an annulet, within a bordure of three rows of mail argent.

NOTE: The proper spelling for Ugi is Uggi. The patronymic form is Uggason. You will have to document the use of such a compound name. No matter what your father did (or what happened to him), you would still be Hrolfr Uggason.

Lark of Esherwood. Or, three maple trees palewise in fess and on a chief azure two larks statant respectant Or.

NOTE: With a few exceptions, it is our opinion that the names of birds were not used as given names in our period. You are invited to prove us wrong or to change your name. If you changed your surname to Larkwood, you would still have canting arms. The badge and device are both OK.

Lark of Esherwood. Badge. Three larkspur blossoms slipped and conjoined at the stems in pall inverted proper. (Deiphinius ajacis)

NOTE: See above.

Nordwald, Canton of. Per chevron nebuly per pale vert and azure and argent, in chevron enhanced a mullet between two axes reversed argent, and in base a laurel wreath vert.

NOTE: On July 16, 1979, I said "Nordwald" conflicts with North Woods. It still does. It also conflicts with the Barony of Nordskogen (Middle). Get permission from both or change your name. The arms are OK.

Solak Vaslovic. Azure, on a pale argent, a pile inverted throughout sable.

NOTE: Conflicts with Playses: Azure, on a pale argent eight billets sable (Papworth, p. 1005) and Cormac na Connacht: Azure, on a pale argent a sword inverted gules. Please document the name.

Teragram of Carker. Sable, a bend sinister argent, overall a mushroom issuant from base counterchanged.

NOTE: You cannot be a trillion grams (Teragram). Made-up names must be in keeping with period usage. This is not. Why not just use Margaret? What kind of mushroom is it? It isn't your standard grocery-store mushroom. "Cark" means worry. You could be "the Carker," but not "of Carker."

Tuiren de Childgrove. Or, a cat's head caboshed, dexter eye closed, sable between three pheons azure.

NOTE: Conflicts with Tongra: Or, three pheons azure (Papworth, p. 1020).

Kingdom of the West

Addison the Lame. Badge for Religious Society of the Brethren. Per fess embowed counter-embowed azure and argent, in sinister chief a dove's head erased argent.

NOTE: The Society's name conflicts with the Religious Society of Friends and the Church of the Brethren. Addison is a surname. By my previous ruling, in order to register it he must provide documentation that Addison was used as a given name in our period. As it stands now, he has a surname and a sobriquet, but no given name.

Ian Jameson. Per bend sinister vert and sable, a spiderweb radiating from base Or, overall a griffin counter-segreant argent.

NOTE: This is not a heraldic spiderweb, which shows the entire web. This is not a period heraldic style, but more of a modern comic-book style. Thin lines are not period heraldry. Arachne's Web has the traditional circular spider web as its charge. Why not use fretty?

Richard of Seahaven. Badges; seal. 1. Two puma's heads addorsed and conjoined at the neck. 2. A gore gules conjoined at the point with a sword inverted bendwise sinister. 3. On a gore argent voided an ermine spot argent.

NOTE: All three rejected. 1. Puma seal: Conflicts with the trademark of Snow Lion Co.: Two snow lion's heads addorsed and conjoined at the neck. 2. Sword and gore badge: Badges now have tinctured charges, although they may omit the field. Seals have no colors at all. This is halfway in between and so cannot be done. It also has a subordinary without a field, which cannot be done. 3. Gore and ermine spot badge: You cannot have an ordinary or subordinary without a field unless it can be couped. In order for a charge to be used in a badge without a field, its shape must not depend upon the shape of the field. A gore's shape does depend on the shape of the field (heater, lozenge, roundel, etc.) and so cannot be used by itself, without a field.

Thomas of Appledore. Sable, a cat sejant to sinister and in dexter chief a sheaf of three arrows inverted Or.

NOTE: A. A. Milne's When We Were Very Young has the character Sir Thomas Thom, who was a knight of Appledore. He has a tomcat on his arms. Thus the name and device conflict. The device also conflicts with Bruce the Long Winded: Sable, in pale a sheaf of three arrows inverted and a longbow fesswise Or.

END OF REJECTIONS

Pray believe, my Lords and Ladies, that I remain
