The January Laurel decisions were made at the Pelican meeting held on Sunday, January 15, 2017 and the Wreath meeting held on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Not all letters of intent may be considered when they are originally scheduled on this cover letter. The date of posting of the LoI, date of receipt of the Laurel packet, or other factors may delay consideration of certain letters of intent. Additionally, some letters of intent received may not have been scheduled because the administrative requirements (receipt of the forms packet, receipt of the necessary fees, et cetera) have not yet been met.

REMINDER: Until all administrative requirements are met, the letter may not be scheduled.

* From Laurel: Updated Position Opening

Mea Culpa - The previous position opening went out in an inaccurate fashion. The below announcement is corrected in both the timeline and the disposition for applications. Please accept my apologies, and I look forward to reading your applications, as does the Board.

The Laurel Principal Sovereign of Arms (Laurel) is the principal heraldic officer of the Society and the head of the College of Arms. Laurel is responsible for fostering the study and practice of heraldry, supervising the processing of submissions, and overseeing the heraldic activities of the Known World. Laurel is an unpaid position, currently requiring approximately 20 hours a week.

The position requires considerable tact and patience, armory and onomastic knowledge, supervisory ability, the ability to work within tight deadlines and coordinate closely with Wreath Sovereign of Arms, Pelican Sovereign of Arms, and other staff to produce a monthly Laurel Letter of Acceptance and Return, computer literacy and word processing skills, reliable e-mail and telephone access, and time and ability to travel.

The present Laurel's warrant expires in September 2017. Once the application period closes, the names of the candidates will be posted in a cover letter for the review of the College and submission of comments to the Board.

* From Laurel King of Arms: Sign Herald Deputy Applications Sought

In order to encourage and promote the use and equality of Sign/Silent Heraldry at all courts and events in which the entire populace attends, and to assist the sign/silent heralds in their dealings with the Crown, the Silent Heraldry Deputy of Laurel Sovereign of Arms coordinates efforts and communication throughout the SCA. Sign/Silent Heralds in the Society are heralds who express auditory information into visual and/or tactile information used by deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

This deputy is tasked with the following duties, plus other such tasks as assigned by Laurel:

On January 7, 2017 at Nordskogen's Twelfth Night, Christoforo Alfonso Pallavincino da Firenze (called Foro), scribe and herald in Northshield, was placed on vigil for the Laurel by Hrodir Bek and Yehudah Khagan, Rulers of Northshield in recognition of his work in calligraphy, illumination, and Japanese translation and culture. He will be elevated at a future event.

On March 11, 2017, Brķan dorcha ua Conaill, most recently Rocket Herald, and his lady, Miriam bat Shimeon, were invested as Baron and Baroness of Stormhold in the Kingdom of Lochac.

On the same day, Brķan was also given a Writ to answer whether he would accept induction into the Order of the Laurel. More details and a planned elevation date forthcoming.

Letters of Intent, Comment, Response, Correction, et cetera are to be posted to the OSCAR online system. No paper copies need be sent. All submission forms plus documentation, including petitions, must be posted to the OSCAR online system. While black-and-white emblazons must be included in the Letter of Intent, only colored armory forms need to be posted in the forms area.
