For the October 2017 meetings, printed December 17, 2017

To all the College of Arms and all others who may read this missive, from Juliana Laurel, Alys Pelican, and Cormac Wreath, greetings.

* From Laurel: Some Useful Stuff

A few weeks ago, I was talking with some relatively new heralds on Facebook about SENA and how to use it as a new(ish) herald. SENA wasn't really intended to be read straight through; instead, it's a great reference for any detail you need.

I want to remind everyone that there's more out there than just SENA itself; there are some great materials that help to interpret it. If I'm trying to review all the ideas in SENA, I usually don't go to the main text of SENA. Instead, I start with one of the shorter simpler treatments that the Laurel office created during the rollout of SENA (all these are linked from the Heraldry Rules page at http://heraldry.sca.org/regs.html):

* From Pelican: Some Name Resources (An Ongoing Series)

In this month's installment, I would like to call attention to the online articles in the Proceedings from the Known World Heralds and Scribes Symposium, which can be found here: http://heraldry.sca.org/kwhss/. The Proceedings from 2013-2017 are currently available online.

The articles available include a wide variety of onomastic topics, as well as articles covering the heraldic process. The following process articles may be of particular help to name heralds:

Unsurprisingly, the advice in my article on summarizing name documentation is a good guide for how I would like to see documentation formatted for me as Pelican.

The Proceedings also include numerous articles on names from specific cultures and time periods. I highly recommend name heralds taking time to peruse the available articles. Many of them contain names that are not documentable from other sources.

Articles from KWHSS Proceedings are considered no-photocopy sources under Appendix H.

* From Morsulus: On Branch Designators

The O&A calls us the Shire of Mumble, but we're a Barony now. What should we do?

First, SENA NPN1B1, Branch Designators, says in part:

In general, changes of status for a branch, such as changing from shire to barony, do not need to be submitted. The Laurel office does not track those changes in status (that being a duty of the Seneschal and Board of Directors). However, it will acknowledge them when a new submission is made.

Branch names in the Armorial reflect the status on the most recent submission from the branch. If the status has changed on a new submission, the designator gets updated as a consequence. It has no bearing on the official status of the branch. That is a question for the seneschalate, and they do not notify the heralds when things change.

That is mostly a good thing. We mind our business; they mind theirs.

So, what is a branch to do if their status has changed? Make an heraldic submission. It all works out in the end. No need to even mention it in the submission, or in commentary on the item. Morsulus' process will note that the name is not registered in the new form, which leads to seeing the new designator, and it gets updated. No extra work for anyone. And, the new status appears on the Letter of Acceptances and Returns, so there is something of a paper trail.

Or, just let it lie. Please.

* Society Pages

On November 4, at Crown Tournament, their Majesties of the East inducted Þórý Veðardóttir, Golden Gryphon Pursuivant for the Barony of Carolingia, into the Order of the Silver Wheel (the East's AoA-level service award). Þórý is a constant presence at Pennsic Herald's Point and one of the people working on updating the Pennsic Traceable Art Project.

On November 18, at Artemisia's Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium and Competition, The Majesties Artemisia elevated Conchobhar mac Michil, Golden Wing Principal Herald, to the Order of the Pelican.

On December 2, at Flintheath Yule Ball in the Kingdom of Drachenwald, Lyonet de Coverham, Schwarzdrachen Principal Herald, was elevated to the Order of the Laurel.

On December 9, at Yule Revel in Renaissance Germany, Lillia de Vaux, Crampette Herault and Pelican Emerita, was inducted into the Order of the Silver Rapier (the East's AoA-level rapier award).

And in sad news, on December 8, Stefan d' Gascon (Stephen Gardner) passed away Friday morning. Stefan was a former Pennon (external submissions) and Lambent (commenting) Herald for the Kingdom of Meridies. He was a dear friend to many and will certainly be missed.

Please send information about happenings to major heralds and major happenings to all heralds to Laurel, so that it can be published here.
