Most properly, these lists should be broken down into groupings, perhaps
by century, with frequencies included. Where it is known that a particular
name was rare, it is so noted. In a general list such as this, however,
it is hard to give a good temporal anchor to most of the given names. Some
enjoyed timeless popularity (such as Ionnes), some faded in later centuries
(such as Paul and Peter), and others gained in popularity (such as Basil
and Manuel) as time went by. Until the British Academy releases the eagerly
and long anticipated Prosopography of the Byzantine Empire, however,
such a task is not possible.
